Chemical Alternatives For Managing Key Stored Product Insects, Rizana M. Mahroof Mar 2019

Chemical Alternatives For Managing Key Stored Product Insects, Rizana M. Mahroof

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

In this short review paper, possible alternatives to manage some key stored product insects pests are discussed. With the phase out of methyl bromide and insects developing resistance to phosphine, fumigants available to manage stored product insects are becoming limited. Potential non-chemical alternatives, those are environmentally benign and do not leave harmful residues on treated products are most favoured. Two techniques; sex pheromone based mating disruption and ozone gas, are explored as safer insect management tools in this paper.

A Very Glabrate Form!: How A Diminutive Plant Enthralled Botanists On Both Sides Of The Atlantic, Douglas Tuers Mar 2019

A Very Glabrate Form!: How A Diminutive Plant Enthralled Botanists On Both Sides Of The Atlantic, Douglas Tuers

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Spanning over the 19th and 20th centuries the great botanists of America and Europe fought to resolve the taxonomy of Clematis ovata Pursh. The taxonomic moves that took place in the debate between the early 1800’s and the 1960’s support six meta-statements. 1. The botany practiced throughout this story eventually required an attention to the geology of shale-barrens from botanists beginning with Edward Steele. 2. This story requires a few amendments to Weldon Boone’s three causes for the botanical celebrity of Kate’s Mountain. 3. Kate’s Mountain acted as a proto-repository for shale barren endemics. 4. The botanists in …

Building Reuse As A Sustainable Practice In Architecture, Mykalene J. Piva Mar 2019

Building Reuse As A Sustainable Practice In Architecture, Mykalene J. Piva

University Honors Theses

Throughout the world a shift of focus from production to sustainability has begun to take hold. While the idea of sustainability and reuse became popular in the 1970’s, it has largely been ignored, but as time goes on, the ability for us to ignore it is diminishing. The field of architecture must recognize and embrace sustainable practices if we have any hope for a healthy and sustainable future. The writer of the book, Building Reuse, Kathryn Merlino recognized the truth of this idea in stating; “Buildings are the greatest contribution to climate change globally. Merlino’s book details the undeniable truth …

Visualizing Classic Synchronization, Joel C. Adams, Elizabeth R. Koning, Christiaan D. Hazlett Mar 2019

Visualizing Classic Synchronization, Joel C. Adams, Elizabeth R. Koning, Christiaan D. Hazlett

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Classic synchronization problems are often used to introduce students to the subtleties of concurrency and synchronization mechanisms, such as semaphores, monitors, locks, and condition variables. The Dining Philosophers, Producers-Consumers, and Readers-Writers are all classic problems in which a correct solution requires the actions of multiple processes or threads to be synchronized. In this paper, we present visualizations for these three problems and describe their use as pedagogical tools to help students build accurate mental models of concurrency abstractions such as starvation, deadlock, livelock, and correct execution. We also present the results of an experiment that indicate students find using these …

Ic 084 Guide To Texas Medical Center Historical Resources Project Records, 1973-1991, Texas Medical Center Historical Resources Project

Institutional Finding Aids

The Texas Medical Center (TMC) Historical Resources Project records contain video oral histories of notable personalities associated with or visiting the TMC. Beginning in 1973, the initial group of interviews focuses on individuals involved in the founding or early days of the TMC. Later “video profiles” also include significant visitors to the TMC. Several of these feature national and international figures in cancer research on their visits to Houston. In total the collection features forty-seven unique recordings of interviews with thirty-eight different individuals. All forty-seven unique recordings have been digitized. See more at IC 084.

Frameup: An Incriminatory Attack On Storj: A Peer To Peer Blockchain Enabled Distributed Storage System, Xiaolu Zhang, Justin Grannis, Ibrahim Baggili, Nicole Lang Beebe

Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

In this work we present a primary account of frameup, an incriminatory attack made possible because of existing implementations in distributed peer to peer storage. The frameup attack shows that an adversary has the ability to store unencrypted data on the hard drives of people renting out their hard drive space. This is important to forensic examiners as it opens the door for possibly framing an innocent victim. Our work employs Storj as an example technology, due to its popularity and market size. Storj is a blockchain enabled system that allows people to rent out their hard drive space …

Neuroscience Articles

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune neurological disease that typically affects young adults, causing irreversible physical disability and cognitive impairment. Alemtuzumab, administered intravenously as 2 initial courses of 12 mg/day (5 consecutive days at baseline, and 3 consecutive days 12 months later), resulted in significantly greater improvements in clinical and MRI outcomes vs. subcutaneous interferon beta-1a over 2 years in patients with active relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) who were either treatment-naive (CARE-MS I; NCT00530348) or had an inadequate response to prior therapy (CARE-MS II; NCT00548405). Efficacy with alemtuzumab was maintained over 7 years in subsequent extension studies (NCT00930553; NCT02255656), in …

The Corinthian

For this project, the class was assigned to pick an object for themselves, and then we were provided with a word and phrase. The object I chose was a tarot card because I knew that would give me a diverse range of directions I could follow. The random word generated for me was ‘Time” and the phrase “Between a rock and a hard place.”

Role Of Resilience In Buffering The Effect Of Work-School Conflict On Negative Emotional Responses And Sleep Health Of College Students, Brandon Wood Mar 2019

Role Of Resilience In Buffering The Effect Of Work-School Conflict On Negative Emotional Responses And Sleep Health Of College Students, Brandon Wood

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

More than 70% of college students are employed while taking classes, and juggling these demands create a strain on students, with strain manifesting itself in several ways including lower academic achievement (Markel & Frone, 1998), increased prevalence of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety (Mounsey, Vandehey, Diekhoff, 2013), and the inability to maintain proper sleep hygiene (Augner, 2011). This trend of working a significant amount of hours while taking college classes is unlikely to change, fostering a research emphasis on identifying factors that facilitate college students’ ability to handle the stress of these multiple competing demands. Resilience is …
