Endothelial, Cardiovascular, And Performance Responses To L-Arginine Intake And Resistance Exercise, Daniel M. Streeter, Kara A. Trautman, Tylor W. Bennett, Lauren E. Mcintosh, James W. Grier, Sherri N. Stastny, Kyle J. Hackney Apr 2019

Endothelial, Cardiovascular, And Performance Responses To L-Arginine Intake And Resistance Exercise, Daniel M. Streeter, Kara A. Trautman, Tylor W. Bennett, Lauren E. Mcintosh, James W. Grier, Sherri N. Stastny, Kyle J. Hackney

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 701-713, 2019. The purpose of this study was to examine the acute endothelial, cardiovascular, and performance responses to L-arginine intake by assessing flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and various indicators (e.g., heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), blood pressure, torque) both before and after resistance exercise. Thirty (15 male, 15 female) physically active participants (mean ± SD: age 20.4 ± 1.8 years, height 176.9 ± 10.2 cm, body mass 76.0 ± 12.2 kg) volunteered for a randomized, cross-over, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Participants completed five sets of elbow extension-flexion exercise after consumption of either 3 g …

State Record For Stenamma Foveolocephalum (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) In Missouri, Angela D. Pierce, Diane L. Wood

The Great Lakes Entomologist

We report the first known collection of Stenamma foveolocephalum (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) from Missouri. Two specimens were collected in pitfall traps during a field study at Sand Prairie Conservation Area, Scott County, Missouri.

Use Of Spotted Knapweed/Star Thistle (Asterales: Asteraceae) As The Primary Source Of Nectar By Early Migrating Monarch Butterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) From Beaver Island, Michigan, Matthew M. Douglas Apr 2019

Use Of Spotted Knapweed/Star Thistle (Asterales: Asteraceae) As The Primary Source Of Nectar By Early Migrating Monarch Butterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) From Beaver Island, Michigan, Matthew M. Douglas

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Recent observations over the past decade suggest that the invasive star thistle (aka spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe L.) provides much of the nectar that supports monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) in their pre-migratory and early migratory flight from the Beaver Island archipelago, an isolated chain of islands located in northern Lake Michigan. With the advent and continuation of global climate change, the opportunistic evolutionary changes that may take place between migrating monarchs and their dependence on non-native nectariferous plants, prior to migration, is worth further documentation and examination.

Tmd Graduate Students Explore Innovation In Different Lights, Erika Holshoe, Jaime Fine Apr 2019

Tmd Graduate Students Explore Innovation In Different Lights, Erika Holshoe, Jaime Fine

Seminar in Textiles and Clothing

When most people think of innovation they tend to think of an advancement in technology. Although this is oftentimes the case, proven by Jaime Fine’s graduate research with E-textiles, innovation can pertain to a whole lot more than technological advances. Erika Holshoe, a URI M.S. Candidate in TMD, demonstrated this to be true during the TMD 402 Lecture on Hijab fashion on social media. After immense amount of research on their topics, Jaime and Erika were able to dissect huge areas for growth within the fashion industry. For Jaime, that was the potential of the immersion of sensors and textiles …

Impact Of Heart Rate Intensity On Shooting Accuracy During Games In Ncaa Division I Women Basketball Players, James Hutson, Courtney Elliott, Casey Pederson Apr 2019

Impact Of Heart Rate Intensity On Shooting Accuracy During Games In Ncaa Division I Women Basketball Players, James Hutson, Courtney Elliott, Casey Pederson

Undergraduate Research Conference

Shooting accuracy in basketball is key to winning games. While there are various factors as to why a team either makes or misses their shots, the intensity of play is likely a contributing factor. A player who has played the majority of the game would likely have a higher, more intense heart rate (HR). Depending on the athlete, this could impact shooting accuracy. Examining the relationship between HR intensity and shooting accuracy has not been looked at in a real game setting before. Therefore, we set out to determine the impact heart rate intensity has on shooting accuracy in a …
