Closing The Gap Between College Students’ Professional Attire Needs And Career Readiness, Jenna Lane, Ashley Rankin, Grayson Capps, Safiya Rann, Jenna Basel

The International Undergraduate Journal For Service-Learning, Leadership, and Social Change

With the rising cost of college, many students face a range of economic challenges, including the professional attire required for job and internship interviews. In response to this problem, the University of North Carolina offers a career-readiness program that allows students to “shop” for free professional clothing at its on-campus Food Pantry. The program is called Attire for Hire (AFH) and the purpose of this study was to examine its impact on participants in need of professional interview clothing. Participants were asked to complete a survey regarding their satisfaction, confidence, and knowledge of career development after the implementation of the …

Our group partnered with Pro Mujer, an international microfinance organization founded in El Alto, Bolivia in 1990. Pro Mujer’s vision, as detailed on their website, is “a Latin America where all women thrive” and their mission is “to empower underserved women to achieve their full potential”. In the Ixil Region of Guatemala’s Quiché Department, there is social stigma against people with physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities. Parents of children with special needs are often ashamed of their children and reluctant to take them outside or send them to school. Worldwide, children with disabilities are less likely to attend school, receive academic support to attain educational goals, and to experience familial and emotional support that increase quality of life. A similar lack of support for children with disabilities in Guatemala perpetuates their lack of access to opportunities for academic, social, and professional development, which contributes to stereotypes …

Women Of The War: Female Espionage Agents For The Confederacy, Sarah Stellhorn Apr 2019

Women Of The War: Female Espionage Agents For The Confederacy, Sarah Stellhorn

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

Although historians have frequently examined the role of women on the home front during the Civil War, women who contributed to the cause in more direct ways, such as espionage, are often neglected. An in-depth examination of specific females spying for the Confederacy, such as Rose O’Neal Greenhow and Belle Boyd, proves that their actions, both remarkable and uncharacteristic of women at the time, had a direct impact on the war. A vast network of spies and smugglers existed not only in the southern and border states but also throughout the North, even in Washington D.C. itself. This network was …

Raped-Related Beliefs And Social Reactions, Tara Pursley Apr 2019

Raped-Related Beliefs And Social Reactions, Tara Pursley

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

Many agree that sexual violence is a pervasive problem, but there is less agreement regarding how to classify and define various experiences of rape. Research has demonstrated that the beliefs one holds about rape are the strongest indicator for how both victims and non-victims of sexual assault perceive and classify unwanted sexual experiences. What is less understood is the way that this perception influences how non-victims respond to a victim’s disclosure of sexual assault. The current study sought to fill this gap. Participants included 119 female college students (Mage = 19.23, SD = 1.98; 81% White). Results revealed that …

Stress In College Students: Worse Than The "Freshman 15?", Kristen Higgins

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

College students experience more change within a few years than most other age groups. This change, among other aspects, can cause increased amounts of stress (Lau et al, 2006). Past research has indicated that certain individuals lack the coping skills necessary to deal with stress adequately, causing a wide range of negative effects (D’Zurilla & Sheedy, 1991; Ross, Niebling, & Heckert, 1999). Brougham, Zail, Mendoza, and Miller (2009) also found significant genetic differences between males and females and their use of coping mechanisms. This current study examined the effects of different coping mechanisms on stress levels in college students, as …

The requirements, expectations, and desires of supervisors are important to meet as young people graduate from college and enter a workforce where intergenerational differences in digital communication patterns are a concern. Navigating the relationship between supervisor and subordinate is paramount for professional success. To better understand the communication needs that supervisors hold, this research will examine appropriate and inappropriate messages deployed in the supervisor/subordinate relationship within organizations.Following data collection, we will detail factors that influence supervisors’ willingness to comply with the requests of their subordinates, such as the supervisor’s levels of familiarity with the subordinate, the supervisor’s attitude toward informal …
