The 'Will Of The Voters': Examining Trends In Legislative Repeal Of State Ballot Initiatives, John Cronin Apr 2019

The 'Will Of The Voters': Examining Trends In Legislative Repeal Of State Ballot Initiatives, John Cronin

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Direct democracy plays a significant role in 24 states across the country. The process of allowing the public to gather signatures, place an issue on the ballot, and then approve it represents the purest form of democracy and provides the ultimate check on unresponsive legislatures. However, in some cases ballot initiatives are repealed by state legislatures after being approved by voters. This research paper asks the following question: are there identifiable trends to the legislative repealing of direct ballot initiatives after they have been approved by the majority of the voting public? After considering past arguments and history surrounding initiatives, …

Evidence Of A Monopsony: The U.S. And Saudi Arabia Before 1974, Douglas Reynolds Apr 2019

Evidence Of A Monopsony: The U.S. And Saudi Arabia Before 1974, Douglas Reynolds

Economics Faculty

A monopsony is a single buyer for multiple suppliers where the buyer forces the suppliers to pay lower than normal prices. An example of a monopsony is a single employer hiring multiple workers and where the workers have no competitive choice about where else to work and so are forced to accept lower than normal wages offered by the monopsonist. The same situation can happen with oil. Here we show a situation from 1965 to 1974 where Saudi Arabia and OPEC were forced to accept monopsonistic oil prices given by the U.S. and the West, a situation that may actually …

Trauma-Informed Practices, Anna Hercha Apr 2019

Trauma-Informed Practices, Anna Hercha

Special Education Masters Program Theses

This meta-synthesis of the literature on K-8 teachers with disabilities examines the profound influence that teachers can have on students dealing with trauma in their lives. Teachers can add to the students’ frustration and pain or, with understanding and specific techniques, teachers can help students to process the traumatic situations in their lives and advocate for the student in a way that will help retain trust in other people. In this meta-synthesis, these techniques will be examined and discussed through the lens of preparing to work with traumatized students who fall under differing special education categories.

His And Her Brains? Effectively Educating Our Boys: A Meta-Synthesis, Gina Auldridge

Special Education Masters Program Theses

The statistical data from the U.S. Department of Education shows a decline in the performance and graduation rates for boys since 1967. By contrast, performance and graduation rates for girls has steadily increased and actually passed the boys in 1981. As reading scores for boys with disabilities continues to be among the lowest in the nation, girls are becoming more competitive in math, science, and AP courses. As this trend has continued in these opposing directions for some time, it has come to the attention of administrators, educators, and even reporters when more schools fail to make adequate yearly progress …

NW Coast Art Collection

The William A. Egan Library opened in January, 1990. This booklet describes the library’s Northwest Coast Native Art Collection and two separately funded totems on the UAS campus. The library was named for William A. Egan, who served as Alaska’s governor for 12 years between 1959 and 1974 and devoted nearly fifty years to Alaska politics. An early proponent of statehood, he led the Alaska Constitutional Convention which preceded statehood in 1959. While the library was still under construction, the Alaska Percent for Art in Public Places Committee recommended 14 artists’ proposals which were approved by the UAS Chancellor and …

2007–2016 Fatal Traffic Crashes In Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, And Washington And Characteristics Of Traffic Fatalities Involving Hawaiians And Cset Minorities, Panos Prevedouros, Kishor Bhatta, M. Mintu Miah

CSET Project Reports

Data for this comparative study were collected from the Fatality Analysis and Reporting System (FARS) for the years 2007 to 2016 for the states of Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, and Washington. The rates of roadway fatalities, especially those of American Indians (which include Aleuts and Eskimos), Guamanians, Samoans, and Native Hawaiians (which include part-Hawaiians) were the focus of the study; they are referred to as “CSET Minorities” in this report; all other races are referred to as “All Others.” Three main contributing factors for fatal crashes—alcohol use, speeding, and non-usage of restraint—were analyzed for each population group. CSET states are lagging …

Particle Size Effects On Mid-Ir Spectra Of Lunar Analog Minerals In A Simulated Lunar Environment, Katherine Shirley, Timothy Glotch Apr 2019

Particle Size Effects On Mid-Ir Spectra Of Lunar Analog Minerals In A Simulated Lunar Environment, Katherine Shirley, Timothy Glotch

Geosciences Research Data

Mid‐infrared spectroscopic analysis of the Moon and other airless bodies requires a full accounting of spectral variation due to the unique thermal environment in airless body regoliths and the substantial differences between spectra acquired under airless body conditions and those measured in an ambient environment on Earth. Because there exists a thermal gradient within the upper hundreds of microns of lunar regolith, the data acquired by the Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment are not isothermal with wavelength. While this complication has been previously identified, its effect on other known variables that contribute to spectral variation, such as particle size and porosity, …

Hitchhikers On Floats To Arctic Freshwater: Private Aviation And Recreation Loss From Aquatic Invasion, Tobias Schwoerer, Joseph Little, Jennifer Schmidt, Kyle Borash

ISER Reports

This study of aviation-related recreation loss shows that a survey primarily aimed at collecting information on invasive species’ pathways can also be used to estimate changes in pathway-related ecosystem services. We present a case study for Elodea spp. (elodea), Alaska’s first known aquatic invasive plant, by combining respondents’ stated pre-invasion actual flights with stated post-invasion contingent behavior, plane operating costs, and site quality data. We asked pilots about the extent of continued flights should destinations become invaded and inhibit flight safety. We estimate a recreation demand model where the lost trip value to the average floatplane pilot whose destination is …

Artificial Intelligence In The Context Of Human Consciousness, Hannah Defries Apr 2019

Artificial Intelligence In The Context Of Human Consciousness, Hannah Defries

Senior Honors Theses

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be defined as the ability of a machine to learn and make decisions based on acquired information. AI’s development has incited rampant public speculation regarding the singularity theory: a futuristic phase in which intelligent machines are capable of creating increasingly intelligent systems. Its implications, combined with the close relationship between humanity and their machines, make achieving understanding both natural and artificial intelligence imperative. Researchers are continuing to discover natural processes responsible for essential human skills like decision-making, understanding language, and performing multiple processes simultaneously. Artificial intelligence attempts to simulate these functions through techniques like artificial neural …

Economies Of Salvation In English Anchoritic Texts, 1100-1400, Joshua Edward Britt Apr 2019

Economies Of Salvation In English Anchoritic Texts, 1100-1400, Joshua Edward Britt

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the different ways medieval authors conceived of anchoritism and solitary life by focusing on three important phases of the movement which are represented by Wulfric of Haselbury, Christina of Markyate, and fourteenth-century mystics. It is grounded in the medieval English anchoritic literature that was produced by religious scholars between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries. Initially, lacking a tradition of their own and a language to articulate the anchoritic experience, medieval hagiographers borrowed the desert imagery from the story of the early fathers who lived in the Syrian and Egyptian deserts, which they viewed as a place of …

The Effects And Students’ Views Of Teachers' Coded Written Corrective Feedback: A Multiple-Case Study Of Online Multiple-Draft Chinese Writing, Jining Han

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the rapid development of Web 2.0 in the field of education, which allows users to interact and collaborate with teachers and peers on the web, many researchers have focused on exploring the developments of using Course Manage System (CMS) in service of L2 writing (e.g., Chun, 2011; Warschauer & Grimes, 2007). Simultaneously, participation in learning and teaching Chinese as a foreign (TCFL) has been accelerating. Learning and teaching Chinese writing plays a significant role in the field of world languages education. In the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and Foreign Language Education (FLE), many studies have examined the …

“Auntie, What Ails Thee?”: The Parzival Question In Orphan Black, Janet Brennan Croft

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

In Arthurian legend, the question Parzival fails to ask upon first seeing the Grail procession in the Fisher King’s castle, and must return to ask later, is the central turning point of his quest. While in many versions the question is about the Grail and its purpose, in Wolfram von Eschenbach’s retelling, the question posed is “What ails thee, Uncle?”, and it is the moment of humility, compassion, and sympathy that is essential to the achieving of the Grail vision, the healing of the Fisher King, and the restoration of the land. In the television series Orphan Black, the …
