Teachers’ Perceptions Of Inclusive Practices For Students With Emotional/Behavioral Disorders: A Meta-Synthesis, Taylor Prewitt Apr 2019

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Inclusive Practices For Students With Emotional/Behavioral Disorders: A Meta-Synthesis, Taylor Prewitt

Special Education Masters Program Theses

The term inclusion has been tossed around the educational world for several decades now. In 1975 when the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, mandated that all children with special needs should be educated in their least restrictive environment (LRE) with their general educated peers, schools began to create special schools and self-contained classrooms for students with disabilities. In the 1980’s there was a movement to create a more inclusive and unified model of special education. Separate education was no longer equal and with the Regular Education Initiative’s (REI) attempt to correct the limitations of IDEA by creating one system …

Second Repeating Frb 180814.J0422+73: Ten-Year Fermi-Lat Upper Limits And Implications, Yu-Han Yang, Bin-Bin Zhang, Bing Zhang

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

The second repeating fast radio burst source, FRB 180814.J0422+73, was detected recently by the CHIME collaboration. We use the ten-year Fermi Large Area Telescope archival data to place a flux upper limit in the energy range of 100 MeV−10 GeV at the position of the source, which is ~1.1 × 10−11 erg cm−2 s−1 for a six-month time bin on average, and ~2.4 × 10−12 erg cm−2 s−1 for the entire ten-year time span. For the maximum redshift of z = 0.11, the ten-year upper limit of luminosity is ~7.3 × 1043 erg s−1. We utilize these upper limits to …

Coherent Radio Emission From A Twisted Magnetosphere After A Magnetar-Quake, Weiyang Wang, Bing Zhang, Xuelei Chen, Renxin Xu Apr 2019

Coherent Radio Emission From A Twisted Magnetosphere After A Magnetar-Quake, Weiyang Wang, Bing Zhang, Xuelei Chen, Renxin Xu

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

Magnetars are a class of highly magnetized, slowly rotating neutron stars, only a small fraction of which exhibit radio emission. We propose that the coherent radio curvature emission is generated by net charge fluctuations from a twist-current-carrying bundle (the j-bundle) in the scenario of magnetar-quake. Two-photon pair production is triggered, which requires a threshold voltage not too much higher than 109 V in the current-carrying bundle, and which can be regarded as the "open field lines" of a magnetar. Continued untwisting of the magnetosphere maintains change fluctuations, and hence coherent radio emission, in the progressively shrinking j-bundle, which lasts for …

Relationship Between School Refusal Behavior And Social Functioning: A Cluster Analysis Approach, Carolina González, Cándido J. Inglés, Christopher A. Kearney, Ricardo Sanmartín, María Vicent, José Manuel García-Fernández

Psychology Faculty Research

On the basis of the heterogeneous casuistry that characterizes the students who refuse going to school, it is useful to have a classification of this population in homogeneous groups. For this, the aim of this study was, first, to identify by cluster analysis the profiles of school refusal behavior based on the functional model evaluated through the School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-S). Secondly, it is intended to analyze if there are differences in social functioning scores according to the school refusal profiles identified. This study involved 1212 Spanish children between 8 and 11 years old (M=9.12, SD=1.05) who completed the …

Adsorption Of Organic Micropollutants To Biosolids-Derived Biochar: Estimation Of Thermodynamic Parameters, Yiran Tong, Brooke K. Mayer, Patrick J. Mcnamara

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This research quantified thermodynamic parameters to better understand the use of wastewater biosolids-derived biochar as an adsorbent to remove micropollutants. The objective of this research was to quantify adsorption capacity; isosteric heat; and change of enthalpy, entropy, and free energy characterizing adsorption reactions between biochar and micropollutants. Adsorption isotherms were developed using a range of temperatures for the micropollutants benzyldimethyldecylammonium chloride (BAC-C10) Carbamazepine (CBZ), 17β-estradiol (E2), 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2), and triclosan (TCS). The thermodynamic parameters derived from the isotherm data were used to assist in characterizing binding affinity, spontaneity, and mechanisms of adsorption. More polar compounds such as BAC-C10 and CBZ …

Structure of weakly bound/unbound light nuclei is often related to the low-energy decay channels involving composite particles like deuteron or α particle. These channels are essential to understand the appearance of light nuclei in the Big Bang nucleosynthesis or the helium fusion. We generalize the Gamow shell model (GSM) in coupled-channel (GSM-CC) representation to include reaction channels with the composite particles. In the core + valence particle formulation, this unified microscopic approach for structure and reactions involving weakly bound/unbound nuclei can be also applied to study low-energy properties of heavy nuclei. As the first application of this generalized GSM-CC approach, …

Fasd Costs: Evidence From Hawaii Medicaid Data, Bridget Hanson, Rebecca Porter, Mouhcine Guettabi

ISER Reports

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), a collection of permanent yet preventable developmental disabilities and birth defects resulting from prenatal alcohol exposure, are associated with substantial costs. We use information from Hawaii Medicaid data for individuals who have at least one FASD-related condition. The total spending for these individuals between 2011 and 2015 was $460,515,584. Of that total, more than $32 million is directly associated with FASD-related visits/codes. We find that the average FASD-related visit costs $121, which is more expensive than the average medicaid visit. We also find that the frequency of FASD-related visits increases with age. We find evidence …

Cold Plasma Poration And Corrugation Of Pumpkin Seed Coats, Alexander G. Volkov, Jewel S. Hairston, Darayas Patel, Ryan P. Gott, Kunning G. Xu

PRC-Affiliated Research

The treatment of seeds and plants by electrically generated cold atmospheric pressure plasma can accelerate seed germination and radicle growing rates. The plasma generated reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, UV photons, and high frequency electromagnetic fields can penetrate into seed coats and modify their surface properties. Atomic force microscope data shows that cold helium or argon plasma induces strong corrugation of pumpkin seed coats, produces pores and surface defects. These structural deformations and poration enhance water uptake by seeds during the imbibing process, accelerate seeds germination, and increase seed growth. The cold atmospheric pressure plasmas treatment of pumpkin seeds also …

Faculty Publications

This article problematizes evidence-based policies in the USA, using Dewey’s (1916) education theory and findings from a school development project in 71 culturally diverse Arizona schools. The study asked three questions: (1) How do formal and informal school leaders work in teams to mediate between evidence-based policy requirements at federal, state, and district levels and the needs of culturally diverse students? (2) What leadership team practices contribute to school development as measured by improved student outcomes in school letter grades? (3) What values from evidence-based policies and democratic education are evident in effective school development? Evaluation methods featured qualitative interviews …

End-To-End Learning: Using Neural Networks For Vehicle Control And Obstacle Avoidance, Keith Russell Apr 2019

End-To-End Learning: Using Neural Networks For Vehicle Control And Obstacle Avoidance, Keith Russell

Honors College Theses

End to End learning is a method of deep learning which has been used to great effect to solve complex problems which would normally be performed by humans. Within this thesis, a neural network was created to mimic the steering patterns of humans in highway driving situations. A Turtlebot was used in place of a car and was tested within a laboratory on a closed loop track to drive within the lanes created for it. The network architecture was based on that of Nvidia’s model which was used for predicting steering angles of a vehicle. The network was successfully trained …

Gpu Acceleration Of Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption, Kai Fan

Student Theses and Dissertations

With the development of cloud computing, data security became popular in recent decades. The public key cryptography has its limitation for a considerable number of receivers, which need encrypt the plaintext several times which based on the receivers' number. Bethencourt. Et al., introduced Ciphertext-policy Attribute-based encryption (ABE) in 2007. CP-ABE became one of the hottest topics in the cryptography system. Because of the advantage of CP-ABE system, which is easy to use for remote storage or distributed data centers. Meanwhile, CP-ABE can provide fine-grain access control, which has the flexibility to send ciphertexts. However, it has such advantages, but the …

Promoting A Coordinated Multi-Site Evaluation For Community-Based Opioid Prevention Programs, Bridget Hanson, Jodi Barnett

Reports

The effectiveness of substance use prevention efforts is often difficult to measure over short grant cycles, especially for emerging issues such as prescription opioid misuse where data is less available and evidence-based strategies are not well understood. Coordinating state and community level evaluation efforts adds further complexity. Since 2016, six communities in Alaska, through a single federal funding stream, have worked to prevent opioid misuse among youth and young adults using policy, system, and environmental strategies. The project is focused on three key intervening variables to reduce prescription opioid misuse. The Alaska Partnerships for Success Project is funded by the Substance …

Estimating Confidence Intervals On Accuracy In Classification In Machine Learning, Jesse Zhang Apr 2019

Estimating Confidence Intervals On Accuracy In Classification In Machine Learning, Jesse Zhang

Mathematics and Statistics

This paper explores various techniques to estimate a confidence interval on accuracy for machine learning algorithms. Confidence intervals on accuracy may be used to rank machine learning algorithms. We investigate bootstrapping, leave one out cross validation, and conformal prediction. These techniques are applied to the following machine learning algorithms: support vector machines, bagging AdaBoost, and random forests. Confidence intervals are produced on a total of nine datasets, three real and six simulated. We found in general not any technique was particular successful at always capturing the accuracy. However leave one out cross validation had the most consistency amongst all techniques …

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications

Childhood poverty has been associated with structural and functional alterations in the developing brain. However, poverty does not alter brain development directly, but acts through associated biological or psychosocial risk factors (e.g. malnutrition, family conflict). Yet few studies have investigated risk factors in the context of infant neurodevelopment, and none have done so in low‐resource settings such as Bangladesh, where children are exposed to multiple, severe biological and psychosocial hazards. In this feasibility and pilot study, usable resting‐state fMRI data were acquired in infants from extremely poor (n = 16) and (relatively) more affluent (n = 16) families in Dhaka, …
