The magnetized near detector (ND280) of the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment has been recently upgraded aiming to satisfy the requirement of reducing the systematic uncertainty from measuring the neutrino–nucleus interaction cross section, which is the largest systematic uncertainty in the search for leptonic charge-parity symmetry violation. A key component of the upgrade is SuperFGD, a 3D segmented plastic scintillator detector made of approximately 2,000,000 optically-isolated 1cm³ cubes. The SuperFGD cube unit shows promising optical performance, including a high light yield of about 40 photoelectrons (p.e.) per channel, a low cube-to-cube crosstalk rate below 3%, and a sub-nanosecond time …

Justice Thurgood Marshall argued, “There is certainly nothing irrational—indeed, there is nothing novel—about the idea of mitigating a death sentence because of lingering doubts as to guilt.” For the first time in the history of the United States, polling shows a majority of Americans prefer life in prison over a sentence of capital punishment. Capital punishment is a hotly debated national issue—recent polling shows 60% of Americans prefer a sentence of life in prison without parole when compared to the death penalty.

Medicaid programs are currently under significant pressure from the passage of H.R. 1 (the “One Big Beautiful Bill”), which cuts federal Medicaid spending by an estimated $911 billion over 10 years — billions of dollars per state — and is projected to increase the number of uninsured by 10 million. H.R. 1 also imposes significant administrative burdens on both American families and states, by creating new work and reporting requirements. Faced with these challenges, cash-strapped states are scrambling to reduce costs.

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

This study investigated how tree species diversity influences the variety of organisms living on or around trees across different habitat types. Field data were collected through random tree selection, measurement of tree diameter, identification of species, and estimation of surrounding ground cover types such as grass, herbaceous plants, woody plants, and leaf litter. Biodiversity associated with each tree was analyzed using the Shannon Diversity Index across several ecosystems, including grassland, woodland, and pond environments. Results indicated that the pond ecosystem exhibited the highest species diversity, followed by woodlands and then forests. A range of organisms, including lichens, mites, fungi, and …

Dusky grouse Dendragapus obscurus are a montane forest grouse species with a paucity of information regarding their temporal and spatial resource use during critical times of high mortality and reproductive output. This lack of vital data may leave dusky grouse at risk of sub-optimal management in many areas of their distribution, especially in the isolated ‘sky island’ mountain ranges of the Great Basin, where high elevation habitats are surrounded by sagebrush and salt desert shrub land flats. SAIPAR Case Review

The High Court of Zambia upheld a school's refusal to admit a Rastafari child with dreadlocks. The author argues that the Court erred by failing to consider regional jurisprudence, international human rights trends, and the historical context of discrimination against natural African hair. The piece contends that requiring Rastafari children to cut their dreadlocks to access public education effectively denies them their rights to education, freedom of religion, and protection from discrimination.

Inclusive early childhood education aims to create environments where children of diverse abilities and backgrounds can learn and grow together, emphasizing social-emotional literacy alongside academic skills. The purpose of this study was to explore strategies to enhance socialemotional literacy and development in such settings, drawing insights from educators and families. Conducted at Nyangao primary school in the Lindi region, the research employed a qualitative case study design, using interviews, observations, and focus group discussions with 3 teachers and 15 parents. Background Postharvest losses caused by poor drying and storage practices lead to maize waste, reduced food availability, unsafe food due to aflatoxin contamination, and income loss for farmers. This exacerbates food insecurity and threatens the livelihoods of rural communities. Leveraging digital solutions to provide quality maize postharvest handling information is critical to mitigating these challenges.

Objective This study examined maize postharvest handling extension information services provided by rural agricultural extension officers in selected districts of Uganda, focusing on how evidence-based practices supported by information sources, expert knowledge, and ICT infrastructure ensure the quality and relevance of the information delivered.

Female sex is associated with higher incidence and risk of dementia. Estrogen may rep-resent one important mechanism contributing to the increase in incidence rates. In thisreview, we synthesize narratively the evidence for associations between estrogen—across the life course from menarche to menopause, estrogen-containing hormonalcontraception and hormone replacement therapies, and pregnancy—with potentialmodifiable risk factors for dementia. These include education, hearing loss, traumaticbrain injury, hypertension, alcohol use, obesity, smoking, depression, physical inactiv-ity, diabetes, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, social isolation, air pollution,and untreated visual loss, as well as apolipoprotein E ε4. In addition, evidence is sum-marized for associations with sleep, diet, and stress. …

In public health research, diverse perspectives are vital to identify biases that homogenous teams might miss. Since publication metrics influence career progression, we investigated publication rate disparities within a School of Public Health. We analysed 18 322 peer-reviewed publications by 513 affiliated researchers between 2014 and 2023 using multivariable regression models and network analysis to assess the impact of gender, ethnicity, job level and centrality in the School’s research network on publication rates. Background Interventions to improve the developmental outcomes of children with developmental disabilities (DDs) in low-resourced settings such as Kenya are limited. The WHO caregiver skills training (CST) was developed to address social and communication needs of children with DDs through caregiver-mediated engagement strategies. This study investigated CST’s acceptability, feasibility and evaluated its effect on behavioural, communication and quality of life outcomes for children with DDs and their caregivers in Kenya.

Background Universal health coverage (UHC) is a globally endorsed commitment aimed at ensuring equitable access to affordable healthcare services. Kenya's journey toward UHC has been marked by significant reforms, including the 2018 pilot phase and ongoing implementation phase (2020–2030). Using qualitative insights from policymakers and practitioners, this study explored Kenya’s progress, challenges, and opportunities to achieve UHC.

Methods Key informant interviews were conducted with 44 stakeholders across seven counties in Kenya. This article addresses the recent BIA decision in Matter of K-E-S-G-, which held that a social group defined by sex and nationality fails to meet the definition of a particular social group eligible for relief under U.S. asylum law. The article argues that while the issue of gender-based persecution is widespread, victims of such harm are united by a unique form of suffering and immutable characteristics. To offer an example of the distinct effects of gender-based persecution, the article highlights women in Eurasia who have been subject to forced marriages.
