Background: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic led to the first large-scale rapid deployment of novel messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines. Although the effectiveness and safety of these vaccines were rigorously studied, post-vaccination adverse events such as giant cell arteritis (GCA) continue to be reported. More than two hundred and sixty three cases of new-onset GCA occurring after mRNA vaccine administration are listed in the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System as of October 2024. We aimed to explore the incidence of GCA after mRNA vaccines among patients in our health system and study their characteristics and outcomes.

Background: Postoperative pain management in the older population has been described as a complex topic with providers trying to balance pain control while minimizing adverse effects of decreased physiologic reserve such as delirium and decreased cognitive function. The goal of this study was to compare pain scores and pain medications prescribed at discharge between an older age group and a middle age group after an elective cholecystectomy.

Background:Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with rising mortality rates in the United States. Early detection of HCC through routine screening significantly improves survival rates in patients with cirrhosis. Current guidelines recommend bi-annual screening using abdominal ultrasound with or without serum AFP levels; however, adherence to these guidelines is suboptimal in clinical practice.

The South Carlsbad Climate Adaptation Project (Project) is an initiative led by the City of Carlsbad (City) designed to address the growing risks of coastal erosion and sea level rise within the city. The Project focuses on a one mile segment of South Carlsbad Boulevard that runs directly along the coast and has experienced decades of coastal erosion, shoreline retreat, and recurring flooding–all of which are expected to intensify due to climate change. Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets

This qualitative article explores the significance of a luxury women’s shirt brand in fostering the professional competitiveness of Brazilian Generation Y women. It does this by identifying the personal values that motivate women to wear these shirts, based on the Means-End Theory. This theory was operationalized using the Soft Laddering technique and complemented by non-participant observation. The result is that these shirts play a role in securing respect – primarily professional, but also personal – from third parties for the wearers, helping them to perceive themselves as successful in their careers. This thesis explores the role that the Cherokee Nation played during the Civil War in Indian Territory and in the border states. The Cherokee people were divided in loyalties between the Traditionalist Party led by Cherokee Chief John Ross and the Treaty Party of Major John Ridge. After the Treaty Party signed the New Echota Agreement with the United States Government, the Cherokee were expelled from their homelands in the Southeast and relocated to Indian Territory. With the murders of his family members, Stand Watie assumed the role of the leader of the Treaty Party and aligned with the Confederate …

Systemic inflammatory response syndrome progressing to sepsis presents a significant challenge in emergency departments (ED), where delayed recognition and treatment increase morbidity, mortality, and costs. This project evaluated whether implementing the Evaluation for Severe Sepsis Screening Tool (SSST) alongside an existing sepsis best practice advisory (BPA) could reduce the interval from sepsis BPA alert to initiation of lab work and treatment in adult patients (18 years and older). A quasi-experimental design compared retrospective control data (n = 81, Group 1) with prospective project data (n = 34, Group 2) over eight weeks. ED nursing staff received specific education on …

Problem: The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection that affects more than 80% of the population within the United States (Eisenhauer et al., 2020). HPV can develop into cervical, anogenital, and oropharyngeal cancers (Eisenhauer et al., 2020). About 4,000 individuals die from cervical cancer alone each year (O’Leary, 2022). The HPV vaccine, though recommended by the ACIP and AAP, is below national vaccination rates in comparison to other vaccines (O’Leary, 2022).

Early treatment of ischemic stroke can significantly reduce disability and mortality rates. Stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) have shown potential as therapeutics for neurological disorders. This study explored whether intranasal administration of EVs from human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) enhances forelimb motor function recovery in a mouse model of motor cortex stroke and investigated their mechanism of action, focusing on neuroinflammation. C57BL/6JRj mice received EV treatment of 0.1 × 10⁹ EVs per dose per day, 48 h post-stroke and twice weekly for four weeks. Background: Bushfire smoke is a complex mixture of hazardous substances. Inhalation poses acute and chronic health risks to firefighters, including respiratory and cardiovascular effects and potential risk for certain cancers. Aims: This paper addresses specific questions from Australian firefighters (via a Fulbright report based on extensive interviews) regarding bushfire smoke. It provides an overview of current understanding and evidence-based recommendations for minimizing exposure and mitigating health risks. In this work, we propose novel van der Waals heterostructures composed of Xenes, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), phosphor ene, and transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTCs), which are separated by insulating hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layers. We theoreti cally investigate the behavior of Rydberg indirect excitons in Xenes/hBN/TMDC, Xenes/hBN/phosphorene and Xenes/hBN/TMTC heterostructures subjected to parallel external electric and magnetic fields that are oriented perpendicular to the layers. By incorporating both isotropic and anisotropic materials, we demonstrate that excitonic properties can be effectively tuned through the external field strengths and the heterostructure design.
