Biofuels are critical drop-in replacement energy sources to support the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation and marine shipping. Transesterification of non-edible oils is a well-established route to biodiesel as a versatile liquid transport fuel, but is challenging to scale using existing homogeneous liquid base catalysts. In this work, we report the synthesis, characterisation, and application of silica-supported MgO solid base catalysts for triglyceride transesterification with methanol and highlight the impact of silica pore structure on performance. True liquid crystal templating enables the one-pot synthesis of mesoporous MgO/SBA-15 catalysts with variable Mg content, or hierarchical macroporous–mesoporous MgO/SBA-15 analogues through …

BACKGROUND: Same-day discharge (SDD) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) may be altered when complications occur. We sought to determine whether risk of the most common complication, acute kidney injury (AKI), is associated with SDD in practice.
METHODS: Using the NCDR (National Cardiovascular Data Registry) CathPCI registry, we calculated the AKI risk for elective PCIs from 2018 to 2022 using the NCDR prediction model. Hierarchical logistic regression models were constructed to predict SDD with AKI risk and procedural variables as fixed effects, and site as a random effect. Trends in SDD rate across AKI risk categories were described and variability across …

Orthoflaviviruses are a genus of arthropod-transmitted RNA viruses that infect humans and other vertebrate animals on a global scale, resulting in extensive morbidity and mortality. Among the orthoflaviviruses, tick-borne encephalitis viruses (TBEV) are an antigenic group that causes severe neurological disease in humans. However, the entry receptors for TBEV, which contribute to cell and tissue tropism, remain largely unknown. Because recent studies identified members of the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) family as possible receptors for some orthoflaviviruses and distantly related alphaviruses, we performed a targeted screen in transgenic cells expressing different LDLR members and identified LRP8 (also called ApoER2) as …

INTRODUCTION: Transitions of care (TOC) between hospital, ambulatory and home settings for high-risk adults with chronic diseases are complex, costly and often result in poor health outcomes. Suboptimal care transitions lead to medication errors, non-adherence, decreased self-management skills and inadequate follow-up, all of which contribute to readmissions or emergency department visits. The Transitional Care Model aims to address these challenges through patient-centred, in-home interventions. We propose to implement and evaluate TELE-TOC: Telehealth Education Leveraging Electronic Transitions Of Care for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients. This study will evaluate the added value of a virtual, pharmacy-based intervention integrated into an …

Fraggin’ The Superhero Genre: Parody And Carnival In Dc’S Lobo, Ryan L. Johnson
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
This essay examines the DC anti-hero Lobo as an ideal example of the constructive, creative power of parody and Bakhtinian carnival. Unlike Bakhtin’s assertion that carnival since the Renaissance has lost its spirit of play and become purely destructive, Lobo uses grotesque violence to create just as much as he destroys social norms. Ultimately, the mini-series under consideration provide a valuable tool for students to understand carnival, parody, and its power as criticism.

ConLawNOW
This essay offers an engaging review of the casebook, The Neglected Amendments of the U.S. Constitution, by Professor Robert Jarvis. While most lawyers, and many nonlawyers, could readily identify many of the “big twelve” constitutional amendments, few are familiar with the other fifteen. This book focuses on the neglected fifteen, arguing they deserve sustained attention as historically and politically important today. Topics include several amendments potentially going in play, such as the Twenty-second limiting the president to two terms, Twenty-fifth on presidential succession and disability, Twenty-seventh on congressional pay raises, and the Ninth on rights retained by the people. …

Evaluating The Pollutant Permeation Index (Ppi) For Regional Air Quality Assessment: A Study Of Los Angeles And California Regions, Jivar Afshar, Arezoo Khodayari, Sina Taghvaee
CSU Journal of Sustainability and Climate Change
Air pollution poses significant challenges by affecting public health, increasing the prevalence of air quality-related diseases, and contributing to climate change. Federal, state, and local governments are implementing various regulations and policies to mitigate these effects. However, assessing the effectiveness of localized air pollution regulations remains complex, often relying on extensive data collection methods, such as emission inventories. This paper introduces the Pollution Permeation Index (PPI), a novel method that simplifies the evaluation of health burdens resulting from pollutant migration between neighboring regions. The PPI method employs straightforward calculations to quantify how pollutants, including Ozone (O₃), fine Particulate Matter (PM …

Solvent Extracts Of Pulvigera Papillosa (Orthotrichaceae) Show No Antimicrobial Properties In Disk Diffusion Tests, Ryan A. Solorzano, Justin Paulin, Grayson Prater, Michael Lanier
Humboldt Journal of Microbiology
Abstract As antibiotic-resistant bacteria become more prevalent, the search for novel forms of antibiotics in the natural world has become an increasingly worthwhile endeavor. Many mosses have been found to contain antimicrobial properties, including those in the family Orthotrichaceae. Pulvigera papillosa, an Orthotrichaceous moss native to California, has thus far not been investigated to determine whether it contains antimicrobial properties. Extraction techniques using polar and nonpolar solvents have proven to be effective in extracting the secondary metabolites that allow mosses to defend themselves against a hostile microbial world. This study takes a preliminary look into the antimicrobial properties of P. …

Assessing Antimicrobial Properties Of Plant-Derived Ellagic Acid Supplements, Noah S. Schuhmann, Andrew Mclaughlin, Julian Barrera
Humboldt Journal of Microbiology
Bacteria present in the human gut microbiota are affected by compounds with antimicrobial properties. Phenolic compounds extracted from plants have been shown to exhibit significant antimicrobial capacity at certain concentrations, which makes them an area of interest to researchers. Ellagic acid is one such phenolic compound, present in nuts and berries that many people consume on a regular basis. Supplements containing concentrated ellagic acid provide an additional source for the compound. It is known that, in the body, ellagic acid is metabolized into urolithins, which contribute to health through their anticancer and anti-inflammatory qualities. In this study, we investigated the …

Growth Trends In Abundance And Diversity Of Synthetic Microbial Communities Over Varying Thermal Conditions, Mariska M. Kessler, Jocelyn Wolfinger, Destiny S. Alcaraz
Humboldt Journal of Microbiology
Microorganisms create various communities that act as the foundation of ecosystems. Abiotic factors such as temperature variability and environmental fluctuations are known to produce shifts in the abundance and diversity of microbial communities, but our current understanding is limited. In this study, we aimed to address this gap by observing abundance and diversity growth patterns under different temperature conditions within individual species and communities. Samples of 4 isolates and 4 artificial communities were grown at constant and fluctuating temperatures. Results found that the isolate samples had the highest abundance under constant high temperatures, whereas the community samples had the highest …

Elucidating The Relationship Between Water Quality And Antibiotic Resistance Of Rainwater Microbes Across Western Humboldt County, Theo P. Murphy, Eve Wendley, Justice Laskowski, Tyler Paredes
Humboldt Journal of Microbiology
Limited studies have been conducted regarding the fecal contamination and microbial dispersal through rainwater, with no known studies investigating the potential connection between antibiotic resistant microbes and water quality in rainwater. This study seeks to identify the presence of a correlation between water quality and incidence of antibiotic resistance in rainwater microbes. We hypothesize that there will be a correlation between these two variables. We additionally anticipate a high incidence of fecal contamination across rural and urban collection sites alike, with fecal contamination being more prevalent in rural areas than urban locals. To determine water quality, we measured the concentration …

Comparative Analysis Of Taproot And Fibrous Root System Microbiomes Under Flooding Stress, Natalie S. Kozlowski, Leighanna Jake
Humboldt Journal of Microbiology
There has been increased interest in understanding how the microbiomes of vascular plants respond to flooding stress and, many studies have focused on monocotyledonous plants with fibrous root systems. This leaves a gap in knowledge of dicotyledonous plants with taproot systems, as previous studies have been in the context of flooding to cropland affecting major food crops which are often monocotyledonous plants with fibrous root systems. Since the structural and functional differences between these root systems may influence microbial community stability and response to flooding conditions, a study looking at both is long overdue As such, this study aims to …

Temporal Prediction Model For Executing Orchestration Functions In Optical Network, Anonymous
Defensive Publications Series
[0001] The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for a temporal prediction model for executing orchestration functions in optical networks. Predictive modeling for provisioning optical services and functions within an optical communication network involves a trained temporal prediction model (“model”). This begins with collecting execution times from each device and interface for various orchestration functions, followed by timing processes at each network element (NE), including issuing, acknowledging, executing commands, and waiting for devices to reach a ready state. The model then establishes correlations between different functions and their provisioning times based on network complexity. Temporal dependencies are recorded between …
