Examining The Impact Of Decreased Snowpack On The Rare Frosted Elfin Butterfly’S Host Plant, Christopher Walsh Nov 2025

Examining The Impact Of Decreased Snowpack On The Rare Frosted Elfin Butterfly’S Host Plant, Christopher Walsh

Biology Student Scholarship

In response to climate change, Earth’s increased global temperature has caused less snowfall and earlier snowmelt in spring. These changes can alter an organism’s phenology, or timing of life history events. Such shifts in phenology may lead to mismatches between interacting species, which are correlated with a decline in the populations of host plant specialists and at-risk species. The rare frosted elfin butterfly (Callophrys irus) is listed as impaired in 5 states, and critically imperiled in 14. These host plant specialists only lay eggs on small yellow wild indigo (Baptisia tinctoria) and wild lupine (Lupinus perennis). If neither plant emerges …

An Objective Method To Locate Shear Lines During The Northeast Monsoon Season In The Philippines, Lyndon Mark P. Olaguera, John A. Manalo, Jun Matsumoto, Faye Abigail T. Cruz, Jose Ramon T. Villarin Nov 2025

An Objective Method To Locate Shear Lines During The Northeast Monsoon Season In The Philippines, Lyndon Mark P. Olaguera, John A. Manalo, Jun Matsumoto, Faye Abigail T. Cruz, Jose Ramon T. Villarin

SOSE Affiliate: Manila Observatory

The shear line is a narrow zone of maximum horizontal wind shear, typically identified as a confluence zone of low-level wind streams. Previous studies showed that this system can trigger heavy to extreme rainfall events in the Philippines during the northeast monsoon season. However, a research gap remains in objectively identifying and locating this system. Thus, this study develops a detection method that may be used for monitoring and forecasting the location of shear lines. Results show that the gradient of meridional winds in the y-direction (∂V925hPa/∂y), the boundary layer moisture flux convergence, and the 925 hPa relative vorticity may …

Intersectional Life Course Inequalities In Cardiovascular Health In Post-Apartheid South Africa, Winfred A. Avogo Nov 2025

Intersectional Life Course Inequalities In Cardiovascular Health In Post-Apartheid South Africa, Winfred A. Avogo

Faculty Publications – Sociology and Anthropology

Background Health inequalities research typically employs single measurement modalities, which limit our understanding of how historical structural violence affects different dimensions of health experience across intersectional social positions over the life course. Methods Using longitudinal data from South Africa’s National Income Dynamics Study (2008–2017), we employed dual measurement approaches and intersectional life course analysis to examine cardiovascular health trajectories among 36,814 individuals (92,702 person-years of observation). Random-effects logistic regression modeled measured hypertension, while zero-inflated Poisson regression examined self-reported CVD comorbidity across birth cohorts defined by differential apartheid exposure, testing race × gender interactions explicitly. Results Pronounced birth cohort gradients emerged …

Quality Improvement Project: Effects Of Ongoing Clinical Education Training On Nursing Faculty’S Self-Efficacy In Clinical Education, Sarah Ferguson Nov 2025

Quality Improvement Project: Effects Of Ongoing Clinical Education Training On Nursing Faculty’S Self-Efficacy In Clinical Education, Sarah Ferguson

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Clinical education is essential for bridging theory and practice in nursing education, yet many clinical instructors transition from expert bedside nurses to novice educators without adequate orientation and training. This quality improvement project examined the effects of ongoing clinical education training on nursing faculty self-efficacy at a satellite nursing school in North Texas. This project, guided by Patricia Benner’s Novice to Expert framework and Lewin’s change model, aimed to determine whether continuous professional development throughout the term would increase clinical faculty confidence compared to standard onboarding alone. A descriptive pre/post design was used, with the Clinical Nursing Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale …

Library Staff Publications

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly improve the practice of medicine. However, its application in pediatric critical care nephrology remains underdeveloped. This scoping review investigates the current state of AI/machine learning (ML) algorithms developed and implemented in the field of pediatric critical care nephrology over more than two decades (2000-2024). We identified 24 articles related to commonly encountered pathologies including acute kidney injury (AKI), electrolyte and acid-base imbalances, fluid management, and dialysis. Twenty (80%) of these articles focused on AKI (prediction and/or detection) and only two articles (4%) investigated the impact of implemented AI/ML models on clinical care …

The Influence Of Muskrats On The Biodiversity Of Wetlands, Emma Thornton Nov 2025

The Influence Of Muskrats On The Biodiversity Of Wetlands, Emma Thornton

Biology Student Scholarship

Wetlands are one of the most productive ecosystems in the world and are home to various plant and animal species. The relationships between the species living in the wetlands keep the ecosystem functional as well as increasing biodiversity. Increased biodiversity of wetlands creates more resilient plant communities. Muskrats are ecosystem engineers, meaning that they alter their surroundings to change the quality and quantity of the available resources through behaviors related to their eating habits and their burrow construction. Muskrats are herbivores and consume large amounts of vegetation, which creates opportunities for more plant species by creating new ecological niches. In …

Faculty Research 2025

The stable structure and growth cycle of human hair enables the accumulation of both endogenous and exogenous compounds, making hair an ideal matrix for long-term profiling. However, its exact molecular composition, shaped by root-to-tip variations, remains poorly understood. Here, we present a metabolome and lipidome atlas of human hair originating from a healthy cohort. The Human Hair Atlas maps over 1200 unique molecular species and highlights compounds prone to significant longitudinal variations. Metabolite and lipid levels vary by up to 50% along the length of the hair, underscoring the importance of accounting for segmental differences. We categorized 122 molecules as …

Host-Specific Bacterial Modulation Of Airway Gene Expression And Alternative Splicing., Mian Horvath, Hyeon Gu Kang, Te-Chia Wu, Elizabeth Aiken, Diana Cadena Castaneda, Sema Akkurt, Florentina Marches, Olga Anczuków, Karolina Palucka, Julia Oh

Faculty Research 2025

The human microbiome varies extensively between individuals. While there are numerous studies investigating the effects of inter-individual differences on microbiome composition, there are few studies investigating inter-individual effects on microbial modulation of the host or host-specific effects. To address this knowledge gap, we colonized human bronchial epithelial air-liquid interface tissue cultures generated from six different adults with one of three phylogenetically diverse bacteria and compared how each microbe differentially modulated host gene expression in each of the six donors. Microbial treatment had the strongest effect on transcription, followed by donor-specific effects. Gene pathways differed markedly in their donor and microbe …

BACKGROUND: Previous murine studies have implicated acid sphingomyelinase-(aSMase) generated subcellular microvesicle particles (MVP) in photosensitivity. Objective: The current double-blinded placebo-controlled studies examined if a single localized ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) treatment generated more MVP in human subjects with self-identified photosensitivity versus normal controls. A topical 4% formulation of the aSMase inhibitor imipramine applied immediately after UVB blocked the MVP release and erythema responses. Erythema responses at 24 and 72 h in response to multiple UVB fluences and minimal erythema doses (MED) at 24 h and effects of imipramine were also tested.

RESULTS: Small cohorts of 10 adult self-identified photosensitive subjects …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The investigation of faults in active tectonic regions is of great importance in geosciences, and geophysical methods play a key role in their detection. In particular, determining subsurface characteristics related to faults and identifying palaeoseismological trench locations using geophysical methods are topics of significant research interest to researchers. The very low frequency electromagnetic (VLF-EM) method is one of the geophysical techniques employed to investigate such problems. This study presents the results of simulation and field investigations using the VLF-EM method for fault detection. The well-established Fraser and Karous–Hjelt filters, which are widely used and effective for fault detection, were applied …

Simulating Realistic Lyman-𝛼 Emitters Including The Effect Of Radiative Transfer, Hasti Khoraminezhad, Shun Saito, Max Gronke, Chris Byrohl Nov 2025

Simulating Realistic Lyman-𝛼 Emitters Including The Effect Of Radiative Transfer, Hasti Khoraminezhad, Shun Saito, Max Gronke, Chris Byrohl

Research Data

We present an empirical yet physically motivated simulation of realistic Lyman-𝛼 emitters (LAEs) at 𝑧 ∼ 2 − 3, crucial for ongoing and forthcoming cosmological LAE surveys. We combine an empirical UniverseMachine galaxy-halo model with a simple spherical expanding shell model for the Lyman-𝛼 radiative transfer, calibrating only three free parameters to simultaneously reproduce the observed Lyman-𝛼 luminosity function and the angular clustering. Our LAE model is further supported by its consistency with other observables such as the Lyman-𝛼 equivalent width distribution, the Lyman-𝛼 escape fraction as a function of stellar mass and dust reddening, and the systemic velocity offsets. …

Meshed Trees: A Framework For Resilient Network Algorithms And Protocols, Peter Willis Nov 2025

Meshed Trees: A Framework For Resilient Network Algorithms And Protocols, Peter Willis

Theses

The continued growth of computer networks in both size and complexity presents challenges for the control protocols that are tasked with maintaining optimal data-forwarding paths. These protocols commonly rely on shortest-path algorithms to determine where network data should be propagated and how it should be analyzed for inclusion in forwarding tables. However, problems arise during reconvergence, the process in which devices rediscover optimal paths following a network failure. Because control protocols were built decades ago for the networks of that era, the existing shortest-path algorithms utilized were designed for problems before the advent of modern computer networks. This resulted in …

A Critical Analysis Of Women’S Experiences Of Sport Participation In Saudi Arabia, Nouf Bamuhair, Richard Giulianotti, Carolynne Mason, Amer Alajmi

Journal of Global South Sport Studies

This study investigates Saudi women's experiences in sports participation within the context of the country's evolving social reforms. It addresses a major research gap on participation and policy issues, alongside a dearth of in-depth empirical studies on women and sport in Saudi Arabia. Traditionally, cultural norms, policies, and conservative interpretations of Islam have restricted women's involvement in sports in Saudi Arabia. However, recent reforms under Vision 2030, aim to enhance women's participation in sport. Using an intersectionality framework, the study examines how age, socioeconomic status, and geographical location shape women's sports experiences. Through semi-structured interviews with women in Riyadh and …

Morphological Variability And Systematics Of Ponto-Caspian Cladocerans Of The Genus Cercopagis Sars, 1897 (Branchiopoda: Onychopoda: Cercopagidae), Larisa F. Litvinchuk, Spartak N. Litvinchuk Nov 2025

Morphological Variability And Systematics Of Ponto-Caspian Cladocerans Of The Genus Cercopagis Sars, 1897 (Branchiopoda: Onychopoda: Cercopagidae), Larisa F. Litvinchuk, Spartak N. Litvinchuk

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In recent decades, significant changes have occurred in the composition of zooplankton, especially in the Ponto-Caspian Basin. An important component of zooplankton in this region is cladocerans of the genus Cercopagis. However, the introduction of invasive species means that many species of this genus have probably become extinct. Because their disappearance molecular study of these organisms is no longer possible. Therefore, a comparative analysis of morphological variability has become more important. We studied the morphological variability of all 12 currently known species of the genus. Samples from the Caspian, Azov, Black, and Baltic Seas were analyzed. The number of species …

Divorcees’ Experiences Of Hubristic Pride In Communication In Previous Marital Relationships, Amanda Harms Nov 2025

Divorcees’ Experiences Of Hubristic Pride In Communication In Previous Marital Relationships, Amanda Harms

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Poor communication practices have significantly strained marital relationships, contributing to increased divorce rates in the United States. As a self-conscious emotion, hubristic pride often leads to poor communication, which in turn exacerbates marital discord and contributes to the breakdown of families. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore how divorcees perceive the impact of hubristic pride on communication in their previous marriages. The theoretical framework underpinning this study was Homans’s social exchange theory. Data were obtained from eight divorced participants not actively involved in ongoing custody proceedings through semistructured interviews and analyzed using Saldaña’s descriptive coding methodology. …
