Most of an infant's day is devoted to sleep - and normal sleep is vital to normal brain development. Sleep disruptions may impair overall health, well-being, and neurodevelopment. Disruptors of sleep and circadian health, such as noise, light, respiratory support, and clinical interventions, are highly prevalent in hospital and nursing care facilities. These factors particularly affect infants who already have an increased risk of sleep disorders and their consequences due to an underlying disease. BACKGROUND: Chronic conditions cause notable health and economic burdens. While health insurance enables access to healthcare, its effects on chronic care outcomes remain under-explored.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between health insurance coverage and cardiometabolic risk factors among people with chronic conditions in India.

METHODS: Data from the Centre for Cardiometabolic Risk Reduction in South Asia (CARRS) and Solan studies, including 2,926 adults with chronic conditions were analyzed using propensity score weighting to evaluate the associations between health insurance and cardiometabolic risk factors (HbA1c, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDLc], and blood pressure [BP]) and self-reported health status (measured using European Quality …

The City of Norfolk, Virginia faces substantial stormwater management challenges due to shallow groundwater, tidal influence, dense urban development, and limited right-of-way. These constraints limit the applicability of many Best Management Practices (BMPs) and require the early identification of feasible practices before detailed hydrologic modeling. This thesis introduces a decision-support tool that quickly and systematically identifies and prioritizes BMPs that are both feasible and well-suited to Norfolk’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) program, streamlining early-stage selection and saving time and resources.

Aluminum (Al), a major component of mineral aerosol (dust), partially dissolves in seawater and is widely used as a tracer for estimating time‐averaged dust fluxes to the ocean. Such estimates rely on dissolved Al (DAl) inventories in the surface mixed layer (SML), an assumed SML residence time of DAl (TDAl), the fractional solubility of Al in dust (AlS), and the mass fraction of Al in dust. Amid growing calls for equity in teacher education, this dissertation investigates how digital competence and epistemological beliefs interact within the lived experiences of marginalized pre-service teachers (mPSTs), also referenced as teacher candidates, whose racial and ethnic identities often position them at the periphery of dominant educational narratives. The floral industry faces rising operational costs, increasingly strict environmental regulations, and high market volatility, all of which threaten the sustainability of flower production. Accurate demand forecasting and production planning are therefore critical to minimize waste and reduce costs while maintaining competitiveness.

This thesis develops mathematical models for optimization, forecasting, and production planning in the floral industry, extending recent work on production planning and trapezoidal demand modeling. This thesis presents a real-time, markerless motion-capture system for intuitive control of a multi-degree-of-freedom robotic arm. Using two synchronized RGB cameras and stereo-vision triangulation, the system reconstructs the three-dimensional position of a user’s hand without the need for physical markers or wearable sensors. The reconstructed 3D coordinates are mapped directly to the end-effector position of the Quanser QArm, a four-degree-of-freedom educational manipulator. Developed entirely in Python, the system integrates stereo camera calibration, 3D hand tracking with MediaPipe, coordinate transformation, and inverse kinematics into a unified real-time control pipeline operating at approximately 200 Hz. Feed efficiency in beef cattle is a complex trait shaped by physiological, behavioral, and social factors that influence how animals access and utilize feed resources. This study examined feed efficiency classification and how it is influenced by feeding behavior, competitive interactions, and bunk approach patterns in yearling Angus bulls housed in a drylot over two years. Divergent selection across heterogeneous environments can drive ecological differentiation and the evolution of locally adapted populations, even when gene flow occurs. We tested for local adaptation between two sympatric monkeyflowers, Erythranthe guttata and E. serpentinicola (formerly Mimulus), which co-occur on the central coast of California. Erythranthe guttata is a perennial species primarily found in moist serpentine seeps, whereas E. serpentinicola is an annual species restricted to adjacent serpentine rock outcrops. Using a reciprocal transplant experiment with second-generation, greenhouse-derived seed, we quantified germination, survival, and reproductive success across contrasting microhabitats. This study examined barriers faced by older adults in Orange City, Iowa, through a mixed-methods community practice project incorporating assessment, implementation, and evaluation. During the assessment phase, researchers conducted interviews with elderly residents and professionals, gathered observational data, and facilitated community dialogue using the Nominal Group Technique. Key themes included social isolation, transportation challenges, financial strain, limited health literacy, and difficulty transitioning from independence to assisted living. A strong cultural emphasis on independence often discouraged help-seeking, while fragmented agency communication and rural limitations in specialized care further complicated service navigation. The associations of the gut microbiome and virome with human health and disease are increasingly numerous and clear. The mechanistic roles of bacteriophages (phages) in the microbiome, however, are especially unclear, as their cultivation is exceedingly difficult and their diversity so immense. We use viral tagging (VT), a technique wherein fluorescently stained uncultivated viruses are allowed to adsorb to host cells and then host cells are singly sorted. BACKGROUND: Cancer-related fatigue (fatigue) is a common and persistent symptom after cancer treatment, yet the role of genetic susceptibility remains unclear.

METHODS: We used data from a prospective cohort study called the ColoCare Study, conducted over 5 US sites and Germany. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to characterize contemporary surgical management practices and factors influencing surgical decision-making in the management of Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) across pediatric epilepsy centers in the United States.

METHODS: A 45-item cross-sectional survey was developed and distributed to Pediatric Epilepsy Research Consortium centers. Domains included institutional demographics, surgical evaluation timing and goals, presurgical workup, procedural utilization and outcomes, and barriers to surgery. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were performed.

RESULTS: Thirty-two pediatric epilepsy centers participated (38% response), the majority comprising pediatric epileptologists at Level 4 National Association of Epilepsy Centers. Most centers (66%) considered surgery …

Cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) is a leading cause of stroke and dementia with no specific treatment, of which molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. To identify potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets, we applied Mendelian randomization to examine over 2,500 proteins measured in plasma and, uniquely, cerebrospinal fluid, in relation to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) markers of cSVD in more than 40,000 individuals. Here we show that 49 proteins are associated with MRI markers of cSVD, most prominently in cerebrospinal fluid. Annual mass drug administration (MDA) is currently recommended for the local elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF). Modeling studies of LF transmission suggest that conducting MDA twice a year could accelerate LF elimination. To test this idea, we compared the effects of 3 rounds of yearly MDA and 5 rounds of semiannual MDA using diethylcarbamazine with albendazole on LF infection measures in Papua New Guinea (PNG) across 2 treatment areas with high LF prevalence. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Excessive exposure to manganese (Mn) produces a clinical syndrome of parkinsonism and cognitive impairment. However, our understanding of the mechanisms of Mn neurotoxicity remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between Mn exposure, cholinergic function, and cognitive impairment in exposed workers.

BACKGROUND: Age is the strongest factor determining disease expression in multiple sclerosis (MS). We previously demonstrated biological age acceleration in pediatric-onset MS (POMS) compared to controls with both epigenetic clocks (DNAm) and telomere length (TL). It is unknown whether these markers report overlapping or distinct aging-related processes.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the correlation between DNAm and TL aging markers.

Scene context prediction, which seeks to infer unknown contextual information from isolated object properties, currently faces limitations due to predominant reliance on pixel-wise supervision that overlooks real-world context priors. To address this, we present ContX, a context-prior-driven, coarse-to-fine model. ContX distinctively integrates explicit linguistic-contextual knowledge in two key ways. First, it proposes a linguistic guided context bank, leveraging linguistic-statistical contextual data to guide the rationality of segmentation shapes and foster meaningful inter-class contextual interactions. Second, ContX augments contextual comprehension by correlating layouts with linguistic descriptions, enhancing layout perception through a multi-modal strategy.
