Moving Beyond The Php500 Noche Buena Illusion, Marites M. Tiongco, Francine Ysabel D. Gañgan Dec 2025

Moving Beyond The Php500 Noche Buena Illusion, Marites M. Tiongco, Francine Ysabel D. Gañgan

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

The recently promoted Php500 Noche Buena package by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has sparked public debate. For some, it is a welcome, “budget-friendly” option. For many, especially low-income households, it feels unrealistic and even dismissive of the sharp increase in food prices in recent years. Retailers and supermarkets have long used similar Php500 holiday baskets as marketing tools.  It is widely used to signal affordability during the holiday season. Yet its persistence masks the cumulative effects of rising prices, stagnant wages, and reduced product quantities. The issue is no longer whether ₱500 can buy a “complete” basket, …

"I Wished I Could Have Said Bye": Exploring Youth Reactions To Formal Mentoring Relationship Endings, Thomas E. Keller, Martha J. Mccormack, Miriam Miranda-Diaz, Alison L. Drew, Renee Spencer

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Youth mentoring programs strive to create stable, supportive relationships between adult mentors and youth mentees to promote positive youth development. Although these formal relationships always reach a conclusion, little is known about how mentees experience the endings of their relationships. This study elicits the words and perspectives of mentees to investigate the emotional reactions provoked by mentoring relationship terminations. Participants were youth (n = 72) in a prospective study of mentoring relationship development who completed a survey following the official closure of their match. Asked how they felt about the match ending, mentees more often indicated negative rather than positive …

"Oxygen Is Not For The Dead": Critical And Radical Social Work In Palestine, Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian, Stephanie Wahab, Abeer Musleh

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Palestinian poet and novelist Hiba Abu Nada, who was killed by an Israeli airstrike in Gaza on October 20, 2023, at the age of 32, taught us that “Oxygen is not for the dead.” Hiba Abu Nada’s (2017) poem, entitled “Our Loneliness,”1 recognizes survivance (Vizenor, 2010)—that is, the active sense of presence and presencing as an endeavor of creating the future (Simpson, 2017)—and asserts Palestinian embodied connections (Shalhoub-Kevorkian, 2024) to land/life (Khoury, 2019 [2016]):

Green-Curious Retail Investors And Unmediated Interactions With Genai, Leslie Boni Dec 2025

Green-Curious Retail Investors And Unmediated Interactions With Genai, Leslie Boni

College of Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper examines how generative AI (GenAI) tools such as ChatGPT respond when green-curious retail investors seek investment advice through unmediated, prompt-based interactions. Motivated by climate concern, these investors may lack financial or climate literacy and may prefer GenAI tools to human advisors, robo-advisors, or platform-integrated systems. Drawing from prior research on investor interactions with GenAI and on information critical for making green investment decisions, we conducted a prompt-based experiment using ChatGPT-4o and ChatGPT 5. Results show that ChatGPT encouraged green investing across all queries, but the inclusion or omission of decision-critical information varied widely. Key considerations, such as lower …

Weaponized Deepfakes: A Low-Resourced Attacker Threat Assessment, Joshua David Labelle

Master's Theses and Capstones

The democratization of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) tools, combined with the short-form nature of modern media consumption, has created a ripe landscape for generating and weaponizing synthetic media. The availability of pre-trained, open-source generative models enables would-be attackers, who lack funding and enterprise-grade hardware, to conduct convincing information-based attacks that harm, manipulate, and deceive. This thesis aims to model this threat actor using an open-source deepfake generation pipeline that requires minimal computational resources and is capable of producing deepfakes in the audio, image, and video domains. This model is then used to identify, measure, and evaluate the capabilities …

Amicus Briefs & Court Filings

Brief in support of Petitioner.

SUMMARY OF ARGUMENT: This Court has “consistently held that a conviction obtained by the knowing use of perjured testimony is fundamentally unfair” because it “involve[s] a corruption of the truth-seeking function of the trial process.” United States v. Agurs, 427 U.S. 97, 103–04 (1976). Here, the Eleventh Circuit acknowledged that the state committed a Giglio violation when it permitted a jailhouse informant to falsely testify at trial that he lacked a violent criminal record despite prosecutors knowing that he did. The Eleventh Circuit deemed this violation harmless, however, based on its erroneous consideration of …

Aiding And Abetting Scientific Integrity In U.S. Federal Government Agencies, Keeley Townsend Dec 2025

Aiding And Abetting Scientific Integrity In U.S. Federal Government Agencies, Keeley Townsend

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

Science can play a critical role in supporting sound public administration and policy decisions. However, the value that science provides to government decision-making is contingent on a government’s scientific integrity standards and the degree to which employees adhere to those standards when conducting, managing, using, or communicating about science. Within the U.S. federal government, scientific integrity standards have historically been defined and applied inconsistently, at times resulting in harmful government actions.

Since at least 2000, the U.S. Congress and several executive administrations have taken steps to strengthen scientific integrity in government operations. One recent step included requiring all federal government …

Heating costs and pressure to reduce carbon emissions are rapidly increasing. A possible solution is the implementation of efficient energy storage systems for UK residential buildings. Paraffin wax-based thermal energy storage offers a promising solution due to its low-cost, high-energy density, and long-term stability. However, its low thermal conductivity significantly reduces its practicality. Multiple upgrades, such as implementing highly conductive particles and nanotubes, have been previously studied but lack the inclusion of cost-effectiveness and real-world feasibility. This paper reviews current research and develops a numerical model using the Enthalpy method and a 2D finite difference approach, utilised in Python. It …

Assessing Cognitive Performance And Comfort Under Simulated Mri Noise And Its Association With Autistic Like Traits, Jasmin Woodhouse Dec 2025

Assessing Cognitive Performance And Comfort Under Simulated Mri Noise And Its Association With Autistic Like Traits, Jasmin Woodhouse

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners produce noise levels between 65 and 130 decibels. This noise, alongside the broader sensory environment of the MRI, poses challenges for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Noise exposure has been shown to impair task performance, increase errors, and affect brain activity. ASD traits are associated with decreased sound tolerance, including hyperacusis, misophonia, and phonophobia. In ASD, noisy environments disrupt inferior frontal gyrus function, impairing task response and brain connectivity. Given this, it’s crucial to understand how these sensory challenges specifically affect ASD experience and performance during MRI procedures. This study assesses cognitive performance and …
