In particular, the gut microbiome plays an essential role in modulating human health through glycan utilization. Carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes), CAZyme gene clusters (CGCs), and polysaccharide utilization loci (PULs) are key genomic features that determine microbial capacities for carbohydrate metabolism. Monitoring plant health, including nutritional status assessment, is an important component of crop management decisions. This doctoral document addresses the use of agricultural remote sensing through focused investigations of plant disease detection and nutrient status assessment technologies that advance precision agriculture. The first chapter provides a comprehensive overview of remote sensing technologies in agriculture and examines current capabilities, limitations, and future directions. The final two chapters address studies that evaluated the virus-nitrogen interaction in wheat and compared methods to determine the nitrogen status of midseason field corn.

This dissertation developed disturbance detection models to fulfill the need for remote sensing landcover products describing grassland structure. The use of landcover products derived from remote sensing is increasing over time in pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) research. Such landcover, however, does not provide relevant pheasant structural habitat information (Chapter 1). Pheasants require tall, high-density grassland for nesting, tall grassland with medium density for brood rearing, and tall grassland for wintering. This thesis develops a Bayesian empirical likelihood (BEL) framework for inference under complex survey designs and extends it to non-probability sampling. Parametric likelihood based methods are difficult to apply to complex survey data because the likelihood is rarely available in closed form. EL provides a flexible alternative by replacing the parametric likelihood with an empirical likelihood constructed from moment conditions. The proposed method first integrates empirical likelihood constraints with survey design features then extends BEL to non-probability sampling through selection models and design consistent restrictions. The Greenland-Iceland-Faroe Ridge (GIFR) is an area of significant geologic interest with anomalously thick crust related to enhanced melt generation from the interaction between the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the Iceland hotspot. To the northeast of Iceland lies the Jan Mayen Microcontinent (JMMC), which is a continental fragment separated from Greenland during the opening of the Northern Atlantic. The overall extent of the JMMC, especially its southern boundary, remains poorly constrained. The crust beneath the GIFR is believed to be primarily of oceanic affinity. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate U.S. consumers’ perception and acceptance of a “culturally mixed” product – i.e., cultivated meat (beef) made with Korean seaweed components – a product that involves the blending of a foreign cultural element (Korean seaweed) with a local cultural element (cultivated beef) to create a mixed cultural representation. Human epidemiological research has shown the adverse health consequences of long-term accumulation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in human tissue. Specifically, this review will examine the relationship between PFAS exposure, impaired immune system functioning, and an elevated risk of respiratory disease using both human and experimental data. Research on human populations indicates that children exposed to PFAS have lower levels of antibodies to vaccines; those children prenatally exposed to PFAS are more susceptible to upper respiratory infections; and that adult humans have a higher incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We examine CUSUM-type test for detecting changes in unconditional variance within Bilinear GARCH models. We derive the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic under both null and alternative hypotheses and assess test effectiveness in identifying single structural breaks. Simulation studies support our theoretical results and demonstrate the practical utility of the test.

Tallgrass prairies are among the most endangered ecosystems in North America, with Arkansas having lost over 99% of its native grasslands. This research evaluated the potential for using native tallgrass prairie species in Arkansas roadside vegetation. Two field experiments were conducted from 2022 to 2024. The first assessed seven native seed mixtures at three roadside locations (Clarksville, Huntsville, and Newport). Seed mixture composition significantly influenced establishment outcomes, with early-establishing forbs such as black-eyed Susan, partridge pea, and Illinois bundleflower performing well, though establishment varied by location. This research investigates the influence of momentum and liquidity factors on stock returns in the Iraq Stock Exchange, employing the six-factor Fama-French model and enhancing the analysis with sophisticated machine learning techniques, including Random Forests. This research seeks to address deficiencies in prior studies by implementing an integrated model within the Iraqi market context, which is under-researched in the context of multi-factor asset pricing models. This enables the evaluation of both heat transfer and pressure drop performance. Temporary, non-tunneled central venous catheters (CVCs) are commonly used for vascular access in patients with vesicant infusion needs or difficult intravenous access (DIVA). However, CVCs are associated with primary bloodstream infections (BSIs), contributing to significant morbidity, mortality, and financial burdens. At our institution, central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) rates and central utilization ratios have steadily increased since 2023, rising from 0.43 to 0.75 and 0.17 to 0.21, respectively, despite system-wide infection prevention initiatives. Recognizing the limitations of current approaches, particularly for DIVA patients, midlines emerged as an alternative to both CVCs and ultrasound-guided peripheral IVs (USG-PIVs).

Purpose: Efficient patient flow is critical for managing capacity and delivering timely, equitable care in emergency departments (EDs). As patient acuity and census increased at Stanford Health Care (SHC), traditional Fast Track spaces were reassigned to higher-acuity patients, leaving lower-acuity patients with prolonged lengths of stay (LOS). Prolonged LOS increases the risk of patients leaving without treatment, impacting care outcomes. To address this, SHC’s Digital Health team and Emergency Services leadership developed an innovative Virtual Fast Track care framework using telehealth technology and multidisciplinary workflows.
