This research seeks to analyze the rhetorical dimensions of how health is discussed in Appalachia, focusing specifically on Letcher County, Kentucky. In Letcher County, as in many Appalachian communities, rhetorics of healthcare and poverty are inextricably linked, largely due to media portrayals. One of the most impactful of these media portrayals is the 1964 CBS special entitled Christmas in Appalachia. However, it is too often distanced from its origins in the Dionysia, a religious festival celebrated in honor of the god Dionysus, at which it was performed as part of tragic ritual. This paper analyzes the specific translation choices of three authors, Anne Carson, Gilbert Murray, and Emily Wilson, and how they affect the meanings of their different translations as a whole. Transcription factors (TFs) function as precision switches that integrate signaling inputs, chromatin state, and protein homeostasis to control gene expression. This thesis unites three interconnected research themes: (1) mechanistic studies of the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) in regulating eukaryotic TFs, focusing on polymerase-associated Factor 1 (Paf1) and TATA-box binding protein-associated factor 2 (Taf2); (2) identification of biomarker genes within odor-related TF networks; and (3) integration of published undergraduate research linking molecular regulation, bioinformatics, and synthetic biology. This research seeks to situate Robert Louis Stevenson's novella, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde into the historical context of the time period using 19th century criminal-typing, policing structures, and the genre of detective fiction. Focusing on the representation of the criminal, Edward Hyde, the layout of the detective novel, and narrative structure, the novel creates an implicit desire for the police, that is not fulfilled throughout the novel's unraveling.

Background: Maternal care provided by a skilled birth attendant (SBA) during pregnancy, at delivery, childbirth, and the postpartum period is vital for reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. In sub-Saharan Africa, the overall prevalence of usage of SBA in a 2021 study was 63%. Tanzania recorded the lowest rate at 13.8%, while Kenya registered 89.3% in 2023. However, disparities exist within Kenyan counties, for instance, in Wajir County only 57% of births were assisted by skilled health providers, a disparity that could be due to socio-cultural differences.

Introduction: Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally and the third leading cause of death in Kenya. Nurses in oncology units often experience stress because of the emotionally demanding nature of providing care for patients diagnosed with cancer. Global studies show that nurses in the oncology unit reported experiencing moderate to extreme work-related stress, with a prevalence of work stress globally varying between 9.2% to 68% globally. Severe pediatric spinal deformities may require staged correction strategies to mitigate neurologic risk and optimize cardiopulmonary outcomes. This paper reviews two adjunctive techniques—halo gravity traction (HGT) and temporary internal distraction (TID)—used in the management of rigid scoliosis. HGT enables gradual preoperative spinal elongation and coronal/sagittal realignment, improving pulmonary function and nutritional status while reducing the need for three-column osteotomies. TID offers an internal, staged distraction approach for patients contraindicated for external traction, allowing incremental correction via posterior instrumentation followed by definitive fusion. Clinical studies report Cobb angle reductions of 30–80 %, with low rates of neurologic complications when neuromonitoring and …

A Dangerous Challenge To The Constitutionality Of The Felon-In-Possession Statute: United States V. Bullock, Matthew Matherne

In United States v. Bullock, Judge Carlton Reeves held that the federal felon-in-possession statute was unconstitutional as applied to Mr. Bullock. Although Mr. Bullock had been previously convicted of multiple violent felonies involving a firearm, including one that resulted in the death of an individual, Judge Reeves dismissed the charges because the government failed to establish a historical tradition of prohibiting felons from possessing firearms. Judge Reeves’ determination that § 922(g)(1) is unconstitutional as applied to Mr. Bullock is a decision that is not only “dangerous” to society, but it contradicts the historical tradition of firearm regulation in America. …

INTRODUCTION: Identifying moderators of treatment outcome for depression and anxiety offers promise for personalizing treatment or providing novel intervention targets. Indices of social well-being have emerged as candidate moderators due to their robust impact on mental health and quality of life. Here, we examine whether measures of social support, isolation, and loneliness moderate outcomes to behavioral activation (BA) and exposure-based therapy (EXP) for individuals with GAD.

IMPORTANCE: Despite a small prevalence, children with complex chronic conditions (CCCs) use substantial inpatient resources.

OBJECTIVE: To assess national trends in hospital discharges, bed days, and hospital charges for children with and without CCCs in the US from 2000 to 2022.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective, repeated cross-sectional study used hospital discharge data from the Kids' Inpatient Database (KID) from the years 2000, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012, 2016, 2019, and 2022 for US children aged 0 to 18 years, excluding uncomplicated newborn discharges.

EXPOSURE: Presence of 0, 1, 2, or 3 or more CCCs.

This study employs dynamic two-way fixed effect (TWFE) event regressions to analyze the direct impact of SEZ policies, specifically focusing on tourism SEZs in 6 districts across Indonesia and neighbouring districts within the same province. By examining data from 2010 to 2022, the research aims to evaluate how tourism SEZ development influences local tax revenue. Our estimation results show no evidence that Tourism SEZs affect aggregate local tax revenues. However, by type of local taxes, we found that Tourism SEZs have increased hotel tax and entertainment tax but not restaurant tax revenues.

Background: Vitality is essential to healthy aging but is elusive to define and measure.Dynamic capture of fluctuations in vitality can uncover abnormal trajectories thatcould be a harbinger of frailty in older adults. This thesis investigates the therapeutic potential of Avaren-Fc (AvFc), a novel lectin fusion protein that integrates the Fc region of human IgG1 with the engineered lectin Avaren, specifically targeting lymphoma. The study delineates the in vitro binding capabilities of Avaren-Fc with a human B-cell lymphoma cell line, a canine B-cell lymphoma cell line, healthy canine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and healthy human PBMCs. AvFc was shown to exhibit significant binding to human lymphoma cells. Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapies have revolutionized cancer treatment, but many patients still do not respond well. To improve therapeutic outcomes, chemotherapy is often combined with immunotherapy, as chemotherapy is known to promote immunogenicity. However, many patients develop resistance to this combination therapy, and the reasons behind it are not fully understood. In this study, we explored how platinum-based chemotherapy, specifically cisplatin, affects tumor signaling to create an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). We found cisplatin triggers ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM)-mediated DNA damage signaling and induces higher expression of prostaglandin E₂ (PGE₂) via a cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) mediated pathway. This dissertation examines the jet-cooled spectroscopy of the calcium propoxide radical (CaOC₃H₇) to understand how increasing molecular complexity reshapes symmetry, electronic degeneracy, and vibronic coupling. Moving from Ca–OCH₃ to Ca–OC₃H₇ lowers symmetry (C₃v → Cs → C₁) and exposes effects such as spin–orbit splitting and both Jahn–Teller and pseudo–Jahn–Teller distortions. These features remodel the excited-state potential surfaces and are directly observable with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and dispersed fluorescence (DF).
