My City Module: A Participatory Tool For City Co-Design, I-Hao Liao, Ying-Yi Hsieh Dec 2025

My City Module: A Participatory Tool For City Co-Design, I-Hao Liao, Ying-Yi Hsieh

IASDR Conference Series

Urban decision-making is no longer a one-way, top-down authoritative command or a bottom-up advocacy, but has shifted toward a bidirectional model of citizen co-creation and dialogue. This transformation enables citizens to move from passive recipients of policy to co-designers of the city's future. To support this ongoing two-way communication, this study proposes four design goals and practical strategies through a literature review, leading to the development of “My City Module”—a gamified, participatory, interactive tool. Combining modular design with data visualization, this tool fosters sustained digital participation in urban planning by enabling citizens to intuitively and concretely express their visions and …

IASDR Conference Series

Recently, perfume has become a tool for expressing personality and emotional value, with increasing interest in sensory experiences beyond olfactory satisfaction. However, little research has explored how spray methods contribute to aesthetic interaction in perfume use. This study investigates how aesthetic interaction can enhance the perfume experience. Three types of aesthetic interaction (freedom of interaction, interaction pattern, and richness of motor actions) were prototyped through a designer workshop. To evaluate the associations between interaction types and perfume perception, tactile characteristics (temperature and texture) were used. Tactile stimuli representing warm-cool and rough-soft qualities were created, and participants matched them to each …

Internal Facial Contour (Ifc): An Exploration Of Expressive Communication Approaches For The Design Of Face-Worn Wearables, Mingshuo Li, Rowan Page, Chuan Khoo

IASDR Conference Series

Facial movement delivers rich emotional messages. This pictorial explores a novel concept in enhancing expressive facial communication – the Internal Facial Contour (IFC). The IFC device constructs a linear visual language on the face through a collection of face-worn wearables. These wearable augmentations deform in response to facial muscle movement, thereby suggesting emotional states. The shape of the IFC device naturally becomes visually wider and more open when smiling; in contrast, it becomes narrower and more closed when frowning. To test the acceptance of this communication language, feedback was collected through casual interviews, visual perception tests, and usage observations. The …

Reconstruction Of Architectural Objects Through Ai-Informed Generation And Additive Manufacturing, Karin Hedlund Dec 2025

Reconstruction Of Architectural Objects Through Ai-Informed Generation And Additive Manufacturing, Karin Hedlund

IASDR Conference Series

Discards from construction and demolition account for a third of all waste in the EU. Architectural objects with visual flaws and low cultural value often become waste before reaching reuse stations. In contrast, broken heritage objects are often restored or reconstructed and, in this process, digital methods such as photogrammetry, custom generative adversarial networks (GANs) and 3D printing show promise. Hence, architectural discards are rarely reconstructed, and when they are, design potential is often overlooked. This research explores an alternative method for digitally and physically reconstructing broken architectural elements, focusing on artistic reinterpretation rather than historical accuracy. A “broken brick” …

Sensus Pond: Exploring Water As Sensing Medium For More-Than-Human Observation, Kuan-Ju Wu, Youyang Hu, Chiaochi Chou, Yasuaki Kakehi

IASDR Conference Series

We introduce Sensus Pond, an interactive system that reconfigures water not merely as a static natural element but as an active sensing medium for registering more-than-human traces. In response to the limitations of anthropocentric approaches in interaction design, we propose a methodological framework of observation without translation—resisting the tendency to stabilize, decode, or humanize nonhuman presence. Drawing from critical theories of more-than-human design and ecological entanglement, Sensus Pond is a materially embedded and site-specific system that employs Swept Frequency Capacitive Sensing (SFCS) and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to detect ephemeral interactions between the pond’s surface and surrounding life forms. …
