This thesis examines how external economic, legal, political, and consumer pressures can affect internal operations, accounting, and audit risk, using PepsiCo, Inc. as a case study. The analysis draws on PepsiCo’s annual reports and Form 10-K, company disclosures, government materials, and business and news sources. Attention is given to the Make America Healthy Again initiative, changing health expectations, food regulation, tariffs, and sustainability concerns. The analysis finds that these pressures could increase research and development, production, inventory, legal, and supply-chain costs while also creating opportunities for PepsiCo to expand healthier products and sustainable practices. We present an approach to defining minimum standards of written communication for engineering graduates based on the evaluation of writing samples by industry personnel. Communication skills are widely recognised as core graduate capabilities; however, universities often lack explicit, evidence-based standards aligned with industry expectations. This study applies the borderline group method of empirical standard setting to elicit judgement from industry professionals who supervise graduate engineers. Participants evaluated samples of student writing in two common engineering genres, technical report executive summaries and emails, using dichotomous acceptability judgements supported by evaluations of structure, content and expression. As alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) devices continue to be present in classrooms, it is vital for special educators to have a grasp of the potential systems they could interact with. Existing literature has indicated three main themes among special educators and their relation to AAC systems: a lack of preservice training, poor in-field experiences relating to collaboration and deficiencies in educational resources, and little understanding of evidence-based interventions and their implementations. As automated technologies become increasingly embedded in retail operations, understanding the antecedents of enhancing frontline employees’ digital adaptive performance has become critical. The study examines (a) how frontline employees’ perceptions of autonomy support from supervisors enhance their motivations in enhancing digital adaptive performance in retail automation contexts, and (b) how technology anxiety moderates the influence of perceived autonomy support from supervisors on psychological motivation. Survey data from U.S. frontline retail employees (n = 305) were analyzed using PLS-SEM. Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems increasingly operate not only as tools for retrieving and synthesizing information, but also as agents that can invoke external functions, modify digital environments, and execute tasks across software systems. This development raises a specific normative problem: the point at which a model’s output ceases to be merely informational and becomes an executable intervention in the world. Type 2 (T2) immune–mediated epithelial-driven diseases are characterized by dysregulated immune responses at epithelial barrier surfaces. A key mediator of these diseases is thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), an epithelial cytokine that acts as a regulator of both T2 and non-T2 inflammation. TSLP activates dendritic cells and other immune cells, promoting the release of proinflammatory cytokines, including IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13. Given its central role in initiating and amplifying T2 inflammation, TSLP has emerged as a promising therapeutic target in multiple epithelial-driven inflammatory diseases. RNA therapeutics are a rising drug category with potential use for a range of conditions encompassing infectious diseases to therapies for cancer, diseases, and genetic disorders. RNA-lipid nanoparticles (RNA-LNPs) are the prominent delivery method for these therapeutics approved products include mRNA vaccines and polyneuropathy treatments. During the 25/26 season, we reached over 150k+ individuals, connected with 36 STEM professionals, helped mentor 11 robotics teams, and curated an Instagram page with over 360k+ views. The team was the Reach award winner at the regional level and was first pick on the Winning Alliance. Iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis (IIT), also known as the Jod-Basedow phenomenon, is a rare yet recognized cause of hyperthyroidism. While iodinated contrast is the most frequent trigger, iodine-rich supplements such as seaweed products or supplements can also precipitate thyrotoxicosis, particularly in individuals with prior chronic iodine deficiency or preexisting thyroid nodular disease. We present a case of thyroid storm following short-term ingestion of Irish sea moss as part of a “crash diet.” A 37-year-old woman with type 1 diabetes mellitus, well controlled on subcutaneous insulin therapy, presented with nausea and vomiting after 6 days of following a restrictive diet consisting solely of …

The present study, a community-engaged research initiative, was specifically designed to enhance MRI accessibility and optimize the overall experience for autistic Latino young adults. Crucially, we employed a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach, ensuring that the voices and perspectives of the target community were central to every stage of inquiry. Insights were gathered from Community Scientist meetings and 18 autistic Latino young adults (ages 18-25) through focus groups with nine MRI-naïve individuals and individual interviews with a separate cohort of nine individuals who had prior MRI experience. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), defined by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases as hepatic steatosis with at least one cardiometabolic risk factor, affects approximately 30-40% of adults worldwide. This condition may progress to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. The rising prevalence, alongside obesity and type 2 diabetes, underscores the need for early risk stratification and integrated therapeutic strategies. Circadian homeostasis, orchestrated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus and core clock gene feedback loops, synchronizes hepatic metabolic pathways with environmental light-dark cycles. This study explored P-12 educators' perceptions of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) for teaching through a qualitative approach using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). Data were collected via a researcher-developed survey examining the barriers P-12 educators perceived related to GenAI use in teaching, administered to 119 educators enrolled in an online educator preparation program in a Midwestern state. The findings showed four levels of perceived barriers: educator, student, institution, and technology. Educator-related barriers included educators' lack of knowledge and readiness to use AI, the need for relevant training, their pedagogical beliefs, and professional identities. Germany was an early leader in the energy transition. In contrast to the country’s general top-down policymaking style, the Energiewende proceeded from the bottom up, through the activism of small innovators and local communities. The 2000 Renewable Energy Sources Act supported the local transition primarily through feed-in tariffs. The locally based Energiewende yielded diverse benefits, including climate resilience, economic vitality, and community efficacy. Technological challenges, however, combined with pressure from incumbent utilities, led the German government to shift back toward a more centralized model. As community ownership stalled, local opposition to facilities imposed from outside grew, slowing the transition and …

This study, which grew out of a 2009 presentation at the Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs, examines possible alignments between choices of lineation in Japanese poetry of the Meiji period (1868-1912) and various political and social ideologies of the time. It argues that the choice of arrangements of lines into patterns of either 5-7 or 7-5 morae typically associated the former with advocacy of adaptation of the classical chōka  genre while the latter tended to be associated with more "progressive" values and was employed in shintaishi and songs that drew stylistic inspiration from the  imayō genre.

In May 2020, Illinois State University published a heartwarming human-interest news story about a recent Latine graduate. The alumna, a mass communication major, had landed a broadcasting job in one of Chicago’s regional television stations, and the goal of the story was to celebrate her success. Primary and secondary immunodeficiency as a cause of recalcitrant or difficult to treat chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and recurrent acute rhinosinusitis (RARS) are under-appreciated etiologies. Patients with persistent symptoms, frequent exacerbations despite appropriate medical therapy, or other sinopulmonary conditions known to be related to an immunodeficient state warrant further testing for immunodeficiency, as up to 20% of this cohort of patients may have underlying immunodeficiency. Testing for immunodeficiency includes CBC with differential, immunoglobulin levels, and pneumococcal vaccine titres before and after administration. Regarding secondary immunodeficiency, these patients may present with atypical symptoms, harbor atypical bacteria, or even present with severe complications …

Background: Prolonged invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) is associated with morbidity and mortality in children. Timely extubation is essential and must balance the competing risks of extubation failure (EF) and prolonged use of noninvasive respiratory support after extubation.

Research question: Did EF risk factors, EF rates, noninvasive respiratory support after extubation practices, and patient-centered outcomes changed between 2013 and 2022?

Study design and methods: Retrospective cross-sectional study of patients younger than 19 years receiving IMV for ≥ 24 hours and extubated between 2013 and 2022 from 158 North American sites in the Virtual Pediatric Intensive Care, LLC, quality improvement database.
