Citators In The Ai Age: Preserving The Human Component Through Court-Created Citators, Cody B. James

Faculty Law Review Articles

Citators have long worked behind the scenes, shaping case law and influencing how judges and lawyers view precedent. Yet their creation has been the sole realm of private publishers. As artificial intelligence (AI) is further integrated into citators’ creation, the human role is at risk of being automated. This article examines citators’ influence over substantive law, the human-in-the-loop justifications for preserving human involvement in citators’ creation, and the argument for courts to produce their own citators. Despite diverse approaches deployed worldwide to address harmful alcohol consumption, understanding binge drinking as a hazardous consumption behaviour remains a pressing issue in marketing and consumer behaviour research. Thus, this study examines the role of cognitive dissonance – and its absence – in facilitating transitions between different phases of binge drinking. Drawing on 38 biographical interviews conducted in Australia, the Netherlands, Poland, and the United States, we identify six instances where cognitive dissonance, or the absence thereof, contributes to the transition into, between, and out of phases of binge drinking. Ecosystem models provide a powerful framework for evaluating complex anthropogenic impacts because they explicitly represent interactions among species and between biological and physical components of ecosystems. Preliminary analyses indicated that increasing temperature is a major driver of shifts in species distributions and biomass within the Hudson River Estuary and New York Bight (HRE-NYB), the focal region of this dissertation. This dissertation develops an end-to-end (E2E) ecosystem modeling framework to investigate the ecological consequences of climate-induced species distributional shifts in this climate-sensitive region. Phospholipase D1 (PLD1) and D2 (PLD2) are lipid metabolizing enzymes that produce phosphatidic acid and contribute to pathologies such as cancer, neurodegeneration, and cardiovascular diseases. Recently, the ARF-like GTPase 11 (ARL11) was identified as an activator of PLD1, but the mechanism of this stimulation remained unknown. Here, we use in vitro biochemical assays and structural predictions to determine that ARL11 interacts with PLD1 using three adjacent, biochemically distinct interfaces, and that the ends of PLD1’s disordered loop form ordered structures to facilitate these interactions. Bone defects caused by trauma, infection, or tumor resection remain difficult to treat because successful repair requires both structural restoration and control of the local pathological microenvironment. Osteolysis, defined as pathological bone resorption, is central to many of these conditions and is commonly driven by excessive osteoclast activity. Clinically translated injectable products such as NovaBone® Putty demonstrate the value of moldable bioactiveglass grafts for defect filling; however, conventional silicate bioactive glasses are permanent and provide limited therapeutic ion release. Investing, like any market activity, is voluntary. Investors may invest however they wish, whether to maximize returns, minimize risk, or support what they view as good causes. Is the current Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) movement a libertarian embrace of socially responsible investing, as Jonathan Macey has argued? We answer with a definite no for several reasons. Government policies impel much ESG investment, most prominently through clean energy transition and financial regulations. Most ESG investment dollars stem not from investor decisions but from potential opportunism by managers of public pensions and sovereign wealth funds. Much investor activism for ESG results …

On December 20, 2024, the Inter-Amer­ican Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) issued its judgment in Beatriz v. El Salvador. The case concerned an impoverished Salvadoran woman, known as Beatriz, who had severe pre-existing conditions impacting her pregnancy, including systemic lupus erythematosus, lupus nephritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. After a first pregnancy,  in 2012 that triggered severe preeclampsia, she became pregnant again in 2013. Ultrasounds showed the fetus was anencephalic, making it incompatible with life outside the uterus.

Consumer debt is a long-standing global phenomenon, yet the regulation of debt collection practices remains fragmented across international borders. This lack of uniform standards leaves consumers vulnerable to debt collectors who exploit weak legal frameworks, resorting to abusive, harassing, and deceptive tactics to pressure repayment. Such practices not only undermine consumer trust in the financial services industry but also prove self-defeating; aggressive collection methods can destabilize a consumer’s financial footing and daily livelihood, ultimately impairing their capacity to repay.

International criminal liability for Crimes Against Humanity (CAH) was born during the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg to address the atrocities committed by the Nazi regime against civilians throughout the Third Reich. Since the post-World War II tribunals at Nuremberg and Tokyo, the definition of CAH has undergone several evolutionary stages to better reflect the circumstances in which atrocities have been committed. The ad hoc tribunals for Yugoslavia and Rwanda substantially adjusted the definition of CAH to fit the context of these conflicts. The Article examines the role of the Venice Commission — the expert body affiliated with the Council of Europe — in addressing democratic backsliding and supporting the restoration of the rule of law, using Poland as a case study. It places the Venice Commission within the broader system of European constitutional governance and discusses its role when Poland moved, after 2015, towards the system of illiberal democracy. Opinions of the Venice Commission were significant in the evaluation of reforms affecting the Polish Constitutional Court, judicial independence, the prosecution service, and surveillance powers.
