Modeling And Control Of Spring-Mass Systems With Switched Dynamics Using Reservoir Computing, Osemudiamen Andrew Ihimekpen

Hybrid spring-mass systems with dynamic state switching present significant challenges for modeling and control due to their complex nonlinear dynamics and discrete state transitions. In this research, a novel reservoir computing framework based on echo-state networks (ESNs) was proposed to model and control spring-mass systems with two distinct states: F1 (without air friction) and F2 (with air friction). The system switched between states based on velocity thresholds, creating a complex, hybrid dynamic that required sophisticated modeling approaches. The proposed method enabled efficient learning of spatiotemporal patterns in hybrid dynamics, offering accurate system identification and robust control capabilities.

Soybean meal (SBM) is the primary protein source in poultry diets; however, its escalating cost and the environmental impact of soybean cultivation underscore the need for sustainable alternatives. Mushroom stems are generated at large volumes as agricultural waste, yet contain bioactive compounds and essential nutrients that may benefit poultry health and productivity. Despite these attributes, limited research has evaluated their potential as feed ingredients across different poultry species. This study addressed this gap by investigating whether mushroom stem powder can partially replace SBM in poultry diets while improving performance, health, and environmental outcomes.

The recent drive for a cleaner environment has led to an increase in greener modes of transportation, including the use of bicycles. These emerging trends have led to an increase in bicycle-related crashes. According to the CDC, an estimated 1,150 cyclists were killed in 2023, with 120,000 sustaining non-fatal injuries. Transportation planners and agencies are under pressure to make cycling safer by providing dedicated bike lanes and improving existing infrastructure. To accomplish this, it is very important to understand which factors contribute to bicycle crash severity across different roadways.

Background: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD, i.e., buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone) save lives, but many individuals are unwilling to receive MOUD treatment. Few longitudinal studies have examined whether social network support for MOUD is related to willingness to receive MOUD. Methods: Egocentric network data were collected from 393 adults with OUD who were incarcerated in 14 Kentucky prisons; follow-up data were collected about six months post-release. For each named alter, participants (egos) reported on perceived alters’ support for buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone at baseline and follow-up; baseline network scores were averaged into a network support for MOUD score and a …

Background: Opioid-related overdose is the leading cause of mortality among individuals recently released from incarceration in the U.S. Naloxone is an FDA-approved opioid antagonist medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid overdose. Despite evidence of its acceptability and effectiveness at reducing the risk of opioid overdose death after release from incarceration, only an estimated 25% of US jails provide naloxone upon release. This study examines the effectiveness of the HEALing Communities Study (HCS) Communities That HEAL (CTH) intervention on enhancing access to overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) in participating jails in Kentucky, New York, Massachusetts, and Ohio. Background: This study uses the Practical, Robust, Implementation, and Sustainability Model (PRISM) and Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance (RE-AIM) model to describe how features of jail contexts are associated with the number of people linked to medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and sustainment of jail linkage programs implemented in Wave 1 of the HEALing Communities Study in Kentucky (HCS-KY) from 2021 to 22. As the adoption of LLMs becomes more widespread in software coding ecosystems, a pressing issue has emerged: does the generated code contain social bias and unfairness, such as those related to age, gender, and race? High entropy dual phase (Hf,Nb,Ta,Ti,Zr)C-(Hf,Nb,Ta,Ti,Zr)B2 ultra-high temperature ceramics were produced from powders synthesized by boro-carbothermal reduction. Systematic additions of 2.5 wt%, 5 wt%, and 10 wt% WC were incorporated after powder synthesis. Additions of 2.5 wt% and 5 wt% WC dissolved into the host ceramics, resulting in complete solid solution formation and nearly full densification. In contrast, a secondary monoboride phase evolved for the composition with 10 wt% WC, in addition to the main high entropy carbide and diboride phases. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that WB formation was favorable for WC additions in the presence of metal diborides at the sintering …

The heat capacity, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity of (Hf,Nb,Ta,Ti,Zr)C-(Hf,Nb,Ta,Ti,Zr)B2 high entropy dual phase ceramics were evaluated from room temperature to 1800 °C and compared with the constituent high entropy single phase ceramics of the same nominal compositions. Thermal conductivity of the (Hf,Nb,Ta,Ti,Zr)C-(Hf,Nb,Ta,Ti,Zr)B2 dual phase ceramic increased from 17.7 W m−1 K−1 at room temperature to 54 W m−1 K−1 at 1800 °C. The addition of WC to the dual phase ceramic reduced its thermal conductivity. For the addition of 5 wt% WC, room temperature thermal conductivity was 16.8 W m−1 K−1 …

Mechanical properties of the bulk YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) single crystal superconductor, prepared by using the Top Seeded Melt Growth (TSMG) method, were determined. Property measurements were conducted by the nanoindentation method under various loads and the micro indentation method at different temperatures. Hardness (H) and reduced elastic modulus (Er) values were calculated by using the Oliver–Pharr method. According to hf/h max values found from load- displacement curves, there is a sink in behavior around outer rim of the indents that was confirmed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis. Studies on precipitation-hardened high-entropy alloys (PHEAs) have demonstrated high strength, good ductility, and thermal stability, making them excellent candidates for high-temperature structural applications such as nuclear reactors. However, many complex parts for those applications would need to be produced via additive manufacturing (AM), whose rapid cooling rates and multiple heating cycles could change the microstructure of the chosen alloys and accordingly their mechanical properties. Effective thermal management at variable and extreme temperatures face limitations for the development of novel energy and aerospace applications. Plasmonic approaches, shown to be capable of tailoring black-body emission, could be effective if materials with high-temperature and tunable plasmonic resonance were available. Here, we report a synergy between experimental and theoretical results proving that many high-entropy transition metal carbides, consisting of four or more metals at equal molar ratio, have plasmonic resonance at room, high (>1000∘C) and variable temperatures. We study mechanism design in environments where agents have private preferences and private information about a common payoff-relevant state. In such settings with multi-dimensional types, standard mechanisms fail to implement efficient allocations. We address this limitation by proposing data-driven mechanisms that condition transfers on additional post-allocation information, modeled as an estimator of the payoff-relevant state. Our mechanisms extend the classic Vickrey–Clarke–Groves framework. We show they achieve exact implementation in posterior equilibrium when the state is fully revealed or utilities are affine in an unbiased estimator. In sorting literature, comparative statics for multidimensional assignment models with general output functions and input distributions is an important open question. We provide a complete theory of comparative statics for technological change in general multidimensional assignment models. Our main result is that any technological change is uniquely decomposed into two distinct components. The first component (gradient) gives a characterization of changes in marginal earnings through a Poisson equation. The second component (divergence-free) gives a characterization of labor reallocation. For U.S. data, we quantify equilibrium responses in sorting and earnings with respect to cognitive skill-biased technological change.

Black mothers with a trial of labor are 25 percent more likely to deliver by C-section than non-Hispanic White mothers. The gap is largest among mothers with the lowest risk and is reduced by only one-fifth when controlling for observed medical risk factors, sociodemographic characteristics, hospital, and physician or medical practice group. Remarkably, the gap disappears when performing a C-section is more costly due to a concurrent pre-labor C-section limiting surgical resources. This finding is consistent with provider discretion—rather than differences in unobserved medical risk—accounting for persistent racial disparities in delivery method. Vincent de Paul was an important reformer of the French Church, which faced several problems with its clergy. Liturgical practices were not standardized, and some priests lived corrupt lives. Because they received stipends for masses, they often celebrated them for that reason rather than out of piety. They tried to acquire several benefices (church offices) and dioceses at the same time to profit from them all, although this was against canon law, and these were sometimes essentially sold or hoarded by noble families. Three letters from Francesco Cellini, a Vincentian novice, and his confrere, Filippo Borgna, a Vincentian student with vows, are given or summarized here. In 1818, Cellini and Borgna made an eighty-eight-day voyage from Livorno, Italy, to the United States. Cellini wrote an account to a friend in Rome, and Borgna largely copied this in his letter, perhaps to ensure that one of their texts would survive the trip back to Italy. These are the only known detailed records of the Vincentians’ second journey to the US and reinforce records kept by Felix De Andreis and Joseph Rosati, who came two …

Louis William Valentine Dubourg, a priest of the Society of Saint Sulpice, invited the Vincentians to establish a seminary for his diocese of Louisiana. Part of his fundraising efforts to support these and other works was this booklet, The Notice sur l’état actuel de la Mission de la Louisiane (Notice Concerning the Current State of the Mission of Louisiana). Printed in 1820, it circulated widely in Europe and was corrected, updated, and reprinted twice in 1822. Transcriptions given here illuminate differences between the editions. The booklet’s author is anonymous but is probably Charles de la Croix, the bishop’s secretary. The …

The Lynk Labs petition presents the Supreme Court with an opportunity to restore the temporal coherence that Congress built into § 311(b)'s evidentiary framework. By treating "printed publication" as synonymous with any reference that eventually becomes public, the Federal Circuit has transformed IPR into a forum where unexamined, abandoned patent applications can destroy patents that survived the very scrutiny those applications failed to complete. The Court should grant certiorari and hold that a printed publication must be printed and published before the critical date to serve as the basis for an IPR challenge.

Faculty face difficult dilemmas as law students increasingly use generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT.  Should faculty prohibit student use of AI in course work, allow it within limits, or actively encourage it to build professional skills?  Because students already use AI tools, faculty must respond.  Doing nothing can undermine core educational goals.

This article offers practical strategies for addressing these dilemmas.  These strategies are designed to promote learning, uphold academic integrity, and prepare students for an evolving legal profession.  This article outlines two broad approaches:  restricting unauthorized AI use and promoting responsible, supervised use.  It provides concrete suggestions …

Women who experience fertility problems often report high levels of distress. Trait mindfulness, or the tendency to be present-minded and accepting of one’s thoughts and feelings, could offset this distress. Aims: In two cross-sectional studies, we tested if fertility patients who were higher in trait mindfulness were lower in psychological distress as measured by anxiety and depressive symptoms, fertility-specific distress, and anticipated negative emotions. Method: Study 1 (N = 324; Age M = 34.3; 90% White) included women who had recently sought treatment for fertility problems, and Study 2 (N = 102; Age M = 32.9; …
