Historians have increasingly examined how media other than yellow journalism helped manufacture consent for American imperialism during the Spanish-American War, yet commercial sheet music—despite its ubiquity at the time—remains overlooked. This study addresses that gap by analyzing fifty pieces of sheet music published around the period, employing a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative, qualitative, and comparative media analysis. The corpus reveals four dominant themes: memorializing the sinking of the Maine; Cuban “liberation” rhetoric that often referenced American ownership or influence over the island; military hero worship that personalized and justified expansion; and messages of national unity that permitted overseas territorial …

The present-day American public education system has evolved to try to teach young students about more cultures and people of different lifestyles. However, despite these reforms to push for an inclusive education system, there is still minimal effort to teach students about disabilities and the people who live with them. As a student living with epilepsy, I have observed a lack of education or conversation about this disability. The purpose of this research project is to ask: How does miseducation on epilepsy contribute to harmful stereotypes and lead to real issues for people living with this disability? Mobility-Restricting Covenants In Business Contracts: The Case Of Franchising, Francine Lafontaine, Lorenzo G. Luisetto, J. J. Prescott

Law & Economics Working Papers

Several studies show that restrictive covenants in employment contracts, such as noncompete agreements, may affect employees in detrimental ways, including by reducing mobility and suppressing wages. While such concerns are real, these clauses also have the potential to serve legitimate business purposes by helping companies protect valuable information, which can encourage investment and training and enhance social welfare. This paper explores the use of several types of covenants, including noncompetes but also confidentiality and post-relationship non-recruitment clauses, in franchise contracts, an important and accessible category of business contracts. Due to the United States government shutdown, GenBank services were unavailable, and accession numbers could not be obtained for the sequences reported in the original publication. Algal lipid production is a promising third-generation biofuel platform offering high photosynthetic efficiency and reduced competition with food crops or arable land. Microalgae primarily synthesize and accumulate lipids as triacylglycerol (TAG) via the Kennedy pathway, which involves key enzymes such as glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH), lysophosphatidic acid acyltransferase (LPAT), diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT), and phospholipid-diacylglycerol acyltransferase (PDAT). However, large-scale lipid production and recovery remain major bottlenecks in algal biofuel development. The Chlorella-specific lytic virus PBCV-1 has been proposed as a low-energy alternative for lipid recovery through viral-induced cell lysis and has been associated with enhanced lipid yields. Introduction and Background: The management of noise stemming from airport operations has been at the center of regulatory efforts aimed at balancing airport expansion with both environmental and community impacts. This study evaluates the effectiveness of community involvement in creating and implementing noise mitigation programs. It explored the methods through which airports are adopting federal regulations, established by agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and implementing initiatives, such as Noise Compatibility Programs (NCPs) and Noise Exposure Maps (NEMs). Specific regulations reviewed include 14 CFR Part 150, 14 CFR Part 160, and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). …

Finland’s Onkalo facility, the world’s first operational deep geological repository (DGR) for spent nuclear fuel, represents a rare and instructive success in the global challenge of long-term nuclear waste management. In contrast to stalled initiatives like Yucca Mountain, a proposed DGR first proposed in the 1970’s in the United States, Onkalo offers critical insights into the conditions that enable progress in this technically and politically complex and intertwined domain. Through an analysis of archival documents, national policy frameworks, safety case materials, and interdisciplinary social science literature, four key contributors of success emerge: Finland’s historically stable and pragmatic approach to nuclear …

This survey explores the current state of research at the intersection of robotics, music, and rehabilitation, focusing on emerging technologies such as human robot interaction methods and system designs that help enable real time, interactive music therapy.

A Leap Of Good Faith: Intent Requirements In Trademark Applications Across Major Markets, Maximillian Scott Matiauda

University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review

This Article examines how four major trademark regimes—the United Kingdom, United States, China, and European Union—define and regulate bad-faith trademark applications. It traces the historical and legislative foundations of intent-to-use doctrines, compares contemporary statutory frameworks and judicial interpretations, and evaluates pivotal developments such as the U.K. Supreme Court’s SkyKick ruling and China’s ongoing trademark reforms. Although the jurisdictions employ distinct legal tools, the Article finds a converging emphasis on curbing opportunistic or abusive filings. The Article ultimately advocates for greater international alignment in articulating and enforcing good-faith standards within trademark law.

Until recently, South Korea’s laws did not allow the donation of art as a form of inheritance tax payment. In fact, there has been a general lack of tax benefits on art donations in the country. Experts often attribute this deficiency to two reasons: the lack of a national and widespread art appraisal system and the traditional view that such tax laws benefit only the rich.
