This introduction to the Kritika Kultura special issue positions contemporary Filipino fiction as a counter-practice to state-driven moral discourses that flatten history, depoliticize crisis, and naturalize inequity. Reading against the NCCA’s Filipino Values for the Common Good, the essay argues that literary work in Filipino refuses the primer’s rhetoric of timeless virtues by foregrounding structural violence, decolonial epistemologies, and the uneven terrains of translation. Through close attention to the nine selected works written originally in Filipino— and to the English translations that accompany them—the introduction shows how fiction enacts a literacy of refusal that interrupts the coercive demands of state, …

In this critical introduction, I investigate the possibilities in as well as the potential limits of the notion of “halaga” or value in thinking about the works that are part of this Kritika Kultura special literary section on contemporary Philippine fiction. This article draws upon qualitative interviews with seventeen LGBTQ+ individuals to explore the role of K-pop fandom in providing support to queer communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The article adds a new critical perspective into academic and journalistic accounts of K-pop fandom to insist on K-pop consumption as a practice that fundamentally improves fans’ mental health. Liu Yichang’s (刘以鬯, 1918–2018) novella Inside the Temple (Sinei; 寺内), has been widely regarded, along with The Drunkard (Jiutu; 酒徒) and Intersection (Duidao; 对倒), as one of the best representatives of Liu’s work due to its narrative completeness and unique literary style. This article explores the symbols that Liu adopts in Sinei as he merges Western stream-of-consciousness techniques with Chinese poetic language. Liu’s synthesis offers fresh insight into humanity, life, and society from two perspectives: “abstract” and “concrete.” Certain images in the novella carry an “abstract” geometric quality and can be categorized as either symbols of the “straight line” (zhixian; …

While intimately connected to the body, it does not belong solely to the domain of natural science. Instead, illness is a phenomenon inherently embedded in power relations and cannot be understood without the influence of external factors such as politics, religion, ideology, and economics. Division trauma is marked by traits specific to the Korean context, including extreme ideological polarization and a complex mix of superiority and inferiority. Our research introduces the concept of “mourning communities” as a framework for collective healing. It synthesizes the psychoanalytic theory of mourning with Turner’s notion of Communitas, understood here as an evolving mode of social engagement. While previous studies have attributed division trauma to the collapse of the “Nation≠State” caused by colonial rule and the Korean War, they have not fully accounted for its enduring impact on Korean society. This paper explores the belliphonic—the sonic dimension of warfare—in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, focusing on the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. While modern warfare studies emphasize the sounds of mechanized combat, the acoustic landscapes of ancient and medieval battles remain understudied. Drawing on recent scholarship by Clauss, Lummer, Potthoff, and Pretzer, this study situates Tolkien’s soundscapes within both historical and mythological traditions. The current study explored the relation between game genre, gender status, and sense of community in online gaming groups. We employ density functional theory calculations to investigate the energetics and diffusion mechanisms of alkali metal ions (Na⁺, K⁺, Rb⁺, and Cs⁺) within the analcime framework. While Na⁺preferentially adsorbs at the center of the 8-member ring, DFT calculations show that larger ions, such as Cs⁺, occupy the center of the cage due to steric constraints. The computed exchange energies indicate that exchange of Na⁺by Cs⁺is thermodynamically favorable. This paper presents the conceptual design and preliminary performance assessment of a hydrogen-powered, high-altitude canard-wing aircraft intended for stratospheric aerosol injection missions. The aircraft is designed to deliver a 50,000 lb aerosol payload at 65,000 ft while sustaining cruise for approximately 3.5 hours. Liquid hydrogen propulsion is employed to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions, minimizing the aircraft's environmental footprint and enhancing the climate impact of the stratospheric aerosol injection mission. An iterative design process using established aircraft sizing methods and RDSwin was conducted to refine the geometry, propulsion, weights, aerodynamics, stability, and mission capabilities of this aircraft. This paper presents the conceptual design and performance analysis of a hydrogen-powered, high-altitude aircraft developed for long-endurance aerosol dispersion missions. Raymer’s methodology is used for initial sizing of the aircraft, followed by utilizing a hybrid weight estimation method comparing the Raymer, Torenbeek, NASA, and Roskam weight estimation methodologies to create a robust weight estimation. Analysis of aerodynamic, propulsion, weight, stability, and mission performance is conducted in RDSwin to demonstrate a sustained operation for a mission including a 65,000 ft altitude, 3.5-hour cruise segment for dispersing a 50,000 lb aerosol payload.
