Design And Modeling Of A Thin Water Falling-Film For Convection-Cloud Chambers, Grant T. Schlaff, Jesse Anderson, Brandon Kieranen, Constantine M. Megaridis, Raymond Shaw

Michigan Tech Publications

Convection–cloud chambers offer a controlled environment to study aerosol-cloud interactions. Ensuring sustained supersaturation in these chambers requires a reliable and efficient water sourcing mechanism. Maintaining saturated boundary conditions on side-walls is important in chambers with large vertical dimensions (up to 10m) aimed at achieving collisional growth of cloud droplets. This study introduces the design, modeling, and measurement of a falling-film system capable of maintaining a stable, continuously replenished water film for continuous evaporation. A distributor is tested, ensuring uniform water coverage over a panel with a range of surface treatments. These surface treatments with micron to 100micron-scale roughness allow for …

Design Of An Fsae Muffler, Suzy Schwabl

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

To compete in the dynamic events at the the Formula SAE IC competition, each vehicle must undergo a rigorous technical inspection. One element of the inspection is the Noise Test, which states that each car must be quieter than 103 dBc when idling and less than 110 dBc at the engine redline. Over the past few years, WashU Racing has used off-the-shelf mufflers with a guess and check system to find muffler combinations that satisfy the noise requirement. The results of that method have yielded either heavy and performance damaging muffler configurations or mufflers that have failed to meet the …

Latent Action Trajectory Optimization, Rahul Milind Kandekar Dec 2025

Latent Action Trajectory Optimization, Rahul Milind Kandekar

Master's Theses

Learning from demonstrations offers a path to bypass the sample inefficiency of reinforcement learning, but obtaining action-labeled expert demonstrations remains expensive and often impractical. Learning from Observations (LFO) addresses this by learning policies from observation-only demonstrations. Recent LFO work relies heavily on behavior cloning: VPT and LAPO use observation-only data combined with limited action labels to train BC policies, while AIME offers an alternative policy inference approach but requires the majority of its training data to have action labels. Through systematic experiments in the Lunar Lander environment, we investigate whether latent action methods can function when state and action dimensionalities …

Killing Like A State: Explaining The Edge Cases Of Rebel Perpetration Of Wartime Genocidal Violence, Cheng Xu Dec 2025

Killing Like A State: Explaining The Edge Cases Of Rebel Perpetration Of Wartime Genocidal Violence, Cheng Xu

Government: Faculty Publications

Genocide scholarship overwhelmingly identifies states as the primary perpetrators of genocidal violence. While non-state armed groups, particularly pro-government militias, have been implicated in genocide, rebel-perpetrated wartime genocidal violence remains exceedingly rare. This paper argues that state-centric explanations of genocide can be exported to explain these edge cases. I argue that four high-threshold conditions must align for rebels to commit wartime genocidal violence: (1) effective territorial control, (2) the dispensability of civilian support, (3) a rigid and exclusionary ideological program, and (4) perceptions of threat, typically constitutive rather than military, where the target group is framed as incompatible with the nascent …

China's Spy Network In America: A People's War Against An Open House: America Needs To Confront The Reality Of The New Cold War, Shaomin Li Dec 2025

China's Spy Network In America: A People's War Against An Open House: America Needs To Confront The Reality Of The New Cold War, Shaomin Li

Management Faculty Publications

The article discusses China's extensive espionage activities in the United States, framing it as part of a broader "people's war" strategy employed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). It highlights historical cases of espionage, such as those involving Qian Xuesen and Bo Jiang, to illustrate the ongoing threat posed by Chinese intelligence efforts, which leverage both state-sponsored and civilian participation. The article contrasts the CCP's ruthless approach to espionage with the U.S. legal system's more restrained response, emphasizing the asymmetry in their respective strategies. It concludes by urging the U.S. to recognize and confront the realities of this new Cold …

Esat-6 And Cfp-10 Reactive Igg In Patients With Tuberculosis Inhibits Intracellular Bacteria, Joshua R. Miles, Pei Lu, Shuangyi Bai, Genesis P. Aguillón-Durán, Javier E. Rodríguez-Herrera, Bronwyn M. Gunn, Blanca I. Restrepo, Lenette L. Lu

School of Medicine Publications

Perspectives beyond the CD4 T cell interferon (IFN)-γ paradigm are needed to understand immunity in tuberculosis (TB). Growing data in patients across a spectrum of TB highlight that changes in antibody Fc domain glycosylation and Fc effector functions correlate with disease and impact Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection. How antigen-specific antibodies within polyclonal responses affect bacteria is less clear. This study examines antibodies targeting ESAT-6 and CFP-10, Mtb virulence proteins essential for pathogenesis. Data from patients with TB show that polyclonal immunoglobulin (Ig)G reactive to ESAT-6 and CFP-10 diverges from other Mtb and non-Mtb antigens with enhanced sialylation, …

Beyond The Human–Animal Transformation In Hasan Aourid’S SīRat ḤImāR And Rawi Hage’S Cockroach, Noha Hanafy Dec 2025

Beyond The Human–Animal Transformation In Hasan Aourid’S SīRat ḤImāR And Rawi Hage’S Cockroach, Noha Hanafy

English Language and Literature

The paper examines the human-animal transformation as a marker of identity explo-

ration in Moroccan writer Hassan Aourid’s Sīrat Ḥimār (2014 سيرة حمار) and Lebanese

Canadian writer Rawi Hage’s Cockroach (2008). The two texts employ the concept of

the human-animal transformation to highlight the complexity of the marginalized

existence in the world. Both texts present nuanced versions of the human-animal

transformation which renders the experience both emancipatory and destabilizing at

the same time. Using the theoretical framework of Deleuze and Guattari’s work on

becoming-animal and the deterritorialization of existence along with Derrida’s discus-

sion of the anthropocentric limit, the paper …

The Mitochondria Is The Source Of Hepatic Amyloid Precursor Protein And Peripheral Amyloid Beta: Implications Of Alcohol-Induced Liver Steatosis In Alzheimer's Disease, Josephine Chu, Ross A. Steinberg, Brian Carson, Devaraj Venkatapura Chandrashekar, Rachita K. Sumbria, Derick Han

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Background

Alcohol-induced liver injury occurs in the pericentral region of the liver and can induce mitochondrial remodeling and exacerbate Alzheimer's Disease (AD) progression. Subpopulations of mitochondria: general mitochondria (GM), peridroplet mitochondria (PDM) and endoplasmic reticulum(ER)-bound mitochondria (ERM) maintain cellular homeostasis via energy synthesis, lipid homeostasis, and regulation of intracellular calcium. Hepatic amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a source of peripheral amyloid beta (aB) and affects AD pathology in the brain. Understanding the localization and expression of hepatic APP in mitochondrial subpopulations are critical to understanding aB metabolism and may play a role in identifying a potential mechanism for metabolic dysfunction. …

The Loss Function Of Usda Forecasters: Evidence From Wasde Animal Product Price Forecasts, Chad Fiechter, Siddhartha S. Bora, Todd H. Kuethe Dec 2025

The Loss Function Of Usda Forecasters: Evidence From Wasde Animal Product Price Forecasts, Chad Fiechter, Siddhartha S. Bora, Todd H. Kuethe

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

The loss function is a mathematical representation of the costs experienced by a forecaster when observed outcomes differ from what was predicted. Prior studies suggest that USDA forecasts are not optimal based on an assumed mean-zero quadratic loss function. This study proposes an alternative view of forecast evaluation, which assumes all USDA forecasts are produced to minimize the forecasters’ costs, and searches for the dimensions of the loss function under which optimality holds. We illustrate the degree to which USDA loss functions vary across a series of WASDE price forecasts. A better understanding of USDA forecasters’ costs will benefit forecasters …

957 Park Avenue Llc V. Ordonez Dec 2025

957 Park Avenue Llc V. Ordonez

All Decisions

The Appellate Term, First Department, affirmed a Civil Court final judgment awarding possession to the landlord in a holdover summary proceeding. The tenant, claiming succession rights as a non-traditional family member to a deceased rent-controlled tenant, failed to establish the requisite emotional and financial commitment and interdependence. The courts found the relationship was "one-sided," lacking mutual support as required by NY City Rent & Eviction Regs § 2204.6[d]. The decision highlights the high burden on a tenant seeking non-traditional family member succession, noting the trial court's warranted conclusion based on the asymmetric dynamic of the relationship.

2075 Creston Ave. Realty Llc V. Colon

All Decisions

In this nonpayment proceeding, the court granted the tenant's motion to amend their pro-se answer, finding the proposed defenses were not "palpably insufficient or devoid of merit." The court also granted limited discovery for the tenant's rent overcharge claim. The court rejected the landlord's argument that the claim was time-barred, applying *Matter of West Pierre Assoc. LLC v Harvey* because the tenancy commenced post-HSTPA. A single unexplained rent increase was deemed sufficient to render the rent history unreliable, justifying discovery to determine the legal rent.

Fast Dispersion-Curve Inversion Using Automatic Differentiation Gradient-Based Calculation, Theodosius Marwan Irnaka, Eddy Hartantyo

Makara Journal of Science

Surface wave inversion is a crucial technique in geophysics for subsurface imaging. However, traditional methods can be computationally intensive, especially for complex models. This study introduces automatic differentiation (AD) as an efficient alternative to finite difference (FD) methods for gradient calculation in surface wave inversion. We compare AD and FD methods using three synthetic examples of varying complexity. Our results demonstrate that AD is significantly faster, with speed improvements of 3 to 12 times over FD, depending on model complexity. Moreover, AD requires up to 3 times less memory than FD. In terms of accuracy, AD provides gradient calculations that …
