Often accounting for over half of total fish biomass, invasive silver carp have dramatically reshaped the ecosystem of the Mississippi River and its tributaries. These high silver carp densities have been shown to affect native fish body condition, abundance, and community structure, highlighting the need for efficient methods to quantify silver carp’s effect on the native fish assemblage. To combat this, invasive plant control treatments can assist in reducing the impacts and spread of damaging, non-native plant species. This dissertation examined how undergraduate students and instructors evaluate lowinference teacher confirmation behaviors across instructional modalities and identified additional behaviors perceived as confirming in contemporary instructional contexts. Participants included 274 undergraduate students and 104 higher-education instructors who completed a survey measuring four clusters of confirming behaviors (willingness to engage, recognition, acknowledgment, and endorsement) using a 7-point Likert-type scale. Open-ended questions invited participants to describe confirming behaviors not represented in existing measures. Results indicated that both students and instructors rated most behaviors above the midpoint of the scale, with instructional responsiveness and course organization receiving the highest ratings. One of the longest running disputes at the intersection of education law and the First Amendment has involved conflict over evolutionary biology in American public schools. Through a century of nearly continuous litigation, creationist legislation and parental demands to exempt students from science instruction have been constrained by longstanding First Amendment doctrines.

That settlement is now unraveling. In Kennedy v. Bremerton School District, the Supreme Court abandoned its prior approach to the Establishment Clause in favor of a history-and-tradition analysis that is ill-suited to questions about modern scientific education. Shock-Wave Structure In A Monatomic Gas Mixture With Rydberg Atoms, Anna Markhotok

The effect of atom size on the shock-wave structure in a binary monatomic gas mixture with Rydberg atoms has been investigated. The problem was solved numerically using the system of hydrodynamic equations in argon gas for the atom-size ratios between 2 and 100, T = 1500 K, and the density between 10¹⁷ and 10²⁰ m−³. It was found that the presence of larger-sized atoms in the mixture results in shock front splitting that is on the order of the mean free path for this component. Racial discrimination is recognized as a race-based traumatic stressor that has been associated with posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and suicide ideation (SI). However, there remains a paucity of research investigating the impact of racial and other forms of discrimination on understudied populations, including Black Americans residing in Appalachian regions. The current study used an online self-report survey to examine PTSS as a mediator in the association between perceived discrimination and SI and to examine the moderating effect of the number of identity factors with which one experienced discrimination (i.e., race, gender, region) on the relationship between perceived discrimination and PTSS. …

AI-driven platforms have the potential to inflict traditional injuries in new ways. Proprietary algorithms trained on large volumes of personal data can cause mental, emotional, and sometimes physical injuries via conversational exchanges, harmful content recommendations, and the promotion of extremist content. This "algorithmic liability" fundamentally challenges existing legal doctrines and statutory protections, thereby exposing deficiencies in current insurance coverage frameworks. 

Historically, courts dismissed algorithmic liability claims early in litigation, invoking Section 230 immunity and First Amendment protections, and resisted classifying algorithmic tools as "products" for the purposes of products liability law. The discovery of new photovoltaic semiconductors is challenging because performance depends on the simultaneous optimization of band gap, optical absorption, carrier lifetime, and defect tolerance. We address this challenge through an experiment-theory feedback loop, testing a promising group of pnictide semiconductors identified through high-throughput computational screening. Our experimental results provide more insights to further improve the theoretical screening process. We present an investigation of the optoelectronic properties of the Zintl pnictide BaCd2P2 (BCP), showing that it exhibits bright band-to-band photoluminescence emission, strong photoconductive-current generation, a room-temperature carrier lifetime of up to 300 ns, and an implied open-circuit voltage comparable to …

Among various imaging modalities available for this purpose, optical imaging techniques offer distinct advantages for real-time guidance through their non-ionizing nature and high temporal resolution. However, light propagation in biological tissue fundamentally limits these imaging modalities by obscuring spatial information and introducing noise artifacts. To address this limitation, we use a series of statistical learning frameworks for predicting a child’s cognitive abilities based on his/her central auditory performances and demographic factors. While the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets deform as slow viscous fluids, ice streams are regions of ice that flow several orders of magnitude faster than the surrounding ice ridges. Ice streams form the primary drainage networks for ice sheets and are currently responsible for the majority of discharge from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Many catchments like the Siple Coast of West Antarctica display a complex array of flow morphologies that are not primarily determined by bed topography. This applied dissertation examined the influence that metacognition has on college readiness and its most traditionally used metrics: performance-based outcomes and persistence. Specifically, this study addressed to what degree underlying metacognitive structures differ between college students’ successful metrics of performance and persistence compared to a more general sample of college students.

This narrative review summarizes current evidence on the biological mechanisms, dental applications, and translational challenges of EGCG in oral healthcare.
