Journal of Hip Hop Studies

April Adams, a 22-year-old Christian graduate student at Howard University, struggled with mental illness for years. Like so many blacks, April expected her faith to serve an elixir for her problems, including depression. However, her prayers were not sufficient. When she was unable to find solace in the church, she sought out an alternative source: the music of Kanye West. She shared her story in a 2016 article, “How An Ultralight Beam Helped My Dark Depression,” which she published in Abernathy magazine. Visualizing United States Energy Production Data, Bruce P. Kimbark, Melissa Luzardo, Charles South, James Taber

SMU Data Science Review

Power plants production, load, financials and environmental impact from power plants in the United States is publicly available either from the Energy Information Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency or Lazard among others. The general public is interested in US energy production and its potential environmental impact but the available information is complex and difficult to properly understand and not shared in ways that are accessible. Our objective was to gather this data and create different interactive visualizations that make it consumable. Each of the five visualization was designed to explain a specific part of energy that together can provide a …

Design Your Career - Design Your Life, Joshua R. Beal

Masters Theses

This research investigates the current plague of unemployment and underemployment that nearly half of qualified individuals in the field of Visual Communications are met with after graduation. Students who major in this field dedicate a tremendous amount of time, money, and energy toward developing a broad skillset that resolves critical matters of communication through visual solutions. Research has demonstrated that despite conditions that are subject to ongoing change of economy, industry, and marketplace there are contributing factors that must be addressed to overcome un/underemployment regardless of circumstances. Publication And Evaluation Challenges In Games & Interactive Media, Elizabeth L. Lawley

Presentations and other scholarship

Faculty in the fields of games and interactive media face significant challenges in publishing and documenting their scholarly work for evaluation in the tenure and promotion process. These challenges include selecting appropriate publication venues and assigning authorship for works spanning multiple disciplines; archiving and accurately citing collaborative digital projects; and redefining “peer review,” impact, and dissemination in the context of creative digital works. In this paper I describe many of these challenges, and suggest several potential solutions.

Virtual Dissection Of White Matter Tracts In A Human Brain Using Applied Game Design And Virtual Reality Imaging, Basil Lim, Anurag Nasa, Nicola Carswell, Elena Roman, Malia Kissner, Darren W. Roddy, Veronika O'Keane, James Carswell

Other

Visualisation of neural tracts in the human brain has previously been accomplished using two dimensional (2D) representational formats. In most cases, pre-operative visualisation is through the medium of 2D MRI image slices, representing coordinates in the brain through a combination of axial, sagittal, and coronal orthographic viewpoints. Software such as ExploreDTI can visualise off-axis viewpoints, however this method is limited to 2.5D image representations. The use of such 2D representations can require significant training in order to contextualise real-world 3D positions and accurately locate and identify neural tract pathways in the brain. Utilising anonymised tract data and advanced neuroimaging technologies …

The Rainbow Connection: Treatment And Analysis Of Hand-Colored Photographs, Courtney Helion 2019 State University of New York College at Buffalo - Buffalo State College

The Rainbow Connection: Treatment And Analysis Of Hand-Colored Photographs, Courtney Helion

Art Conservation Master's Projects

The colors from two historic photographs, hand-coloring kits, and hand-colored mock-ups created from the hand-coloring kits were analyzed to identify their chemical compositions and binders, and to determine whether there were preferred conventional or proprietary pigments used in the hand-coloring of historic photographs. This information will benefit future analysis of historical hand-colored photographs and the development and implementation of treatment plans and goals. The photographs were examined and analyzed using Multimodality Imaging, Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF).
