The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Alice McCall Smith, occupational therapist and artist based in North Carolina, provided the cover art for the Summer 2019 issue of The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy (OJOT). The piece, titled “Mother and Child,” is an 8-1/4” tall sculpture made from clay. Alice grew up on a hill sheep farm in the Scottish Highlands. She has used many of the skills learned on the farm in everyday life and in occupational therapy practice. After being diagnosed and treated for depression, Alice turned to sculpting to cope with challenging emotions. The therapeutic use of clay was a meaningful part of her …

Fore And Aft: Abstraction In Tolkien’S “Ishness” Designs, John R. Holmes
Journal of Tolkien Research
Though Tolkien's artwork tended toward the figural, there was a period during his undergraduate years in which he created abstracts under the name of "Ishnesses." This essay examines the nature of abstraction, how it relates to medieval concepts of art, and how it relates to Tolkien's "visionary" painting of subjects not in the primary world but in the Middle-earth of his vast imagination.

Communication Design: Design Pioneers
Do not call her a graphic designer. Call her a thinker. April Greiman continues to challenge the mean-ing of artist and designer through her experimental use of technology. Through her work, Greiman continues to question the line between art and design. Where does fine art end and design begin? What role does technol-ogy play with art and design? Greiman’s experiences throughout her childhood, education, and philosophical readings influenced her work as an artist and designer. Credited with being an early adopter of designers using Macintosh computer and innovator of the “New Wave” aesthetic in the 1980’s, April Greiman continues to …

On Imaginary Content Analogies In Musico-Literary Imitation, Rodrigo Guijarro Lasheras
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "On Imaginary Content Analogies in Musico-Literary Imitation,” Rodrigo Guijarro Lasheras analyzes "imaginary content analogy," a term often used in musico-literary studies to describe a type of imitation of music in literature. His paper aims to examine and characterize this important concept, establishing several of its features that musico-literary criticism has not normally paid attention to, such as its static or dynamic character, its implicit or explicit musical correlate, and its relation to vocal music. He argues that all imaginary content analogies must have a correlate, and that, despite the fact that we normally think of them as …

Social Space
Singapore is no exception. This is palpably evident in the recent disappearance of cherished spaces such as Rochor Centre, Sungei Road Flea Market and Pearl Bank Apartments. As Janadas Devan once aptly stated, “forgetting is the condition of Singapore.”
This leads one to wonder: in a cityscape where the only constant is change, how can we foster a sense of place and belonging? How and where do we develop social relations beyond our own homes? Are we still able to form meaningful experiences with others as well as our surroundings?
