Surgical-Orthodontic Treatment Of A Skeletal Class Iii Malocclusion With Canine Substitution For Peg Lateral Incisors - Case Report, Chih-Ying Hsu, Hsin-Yi Lo, Kwong-Wa Li, Lian-Ru Chen, Jeng-Fen Liu

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

The overall prevalence of peg-shaped maxillary permanent lateral incisors was 1.8%. The occurrence rates were higher in Mongoloid (3.1%) than in black (1.5%) and white (1.3%) patients. The presence of peg lateral incisors was also a complicated esthetic issue for orthodontist. This case is a skeletal Class III malocclusion 20-years-old male. His problems were mild maxillary skeletal retrognathism combined with mandibular prognathism, anterior crossbite, peg lateral incisors, and upper arch crowding. Treatment involved extraction of two maxillary lateral incisors. Maxillary canine substituted for lateral incisors. Before orthognathic surgery, the extraction spaces were closed for crowding relief of upper arch and …

Facial asymmetry affects more frequently on the lower face than the upper face. Significant facial asymmetry compromises both occlusal function and facial esthetics. The etiology of facial asymmetry may be skeletal, dental, and soft tissue components of dentofacial structures. Correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment planning are very important in the management of the orthodontic patients with the chief complaint of facial asymmetry. Facial asymmetry in lower face can be clearly detected through the examination on chin deviation and asymmetry of bilateral gonial angle regions. The amount and the direction of deviation usually reveals the dental compensation in the transverse aspect …

Orthodontic Treatment Only On The Lower Anterior Teeth For Incisor Intrusion, Cheng-Ting Ho

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Recently bone screws have been used widely as Temporary Anchorage Devices (TAD'S) in various orthodontic treatments including intrusion of anterior teeth. Here we would like to present an uncommon case report of anterior segmental orthodontic treatment without involving the posterior teeth. A 60 year old male patient reported to our hospital with the complaint of missing maxillary anterior teeth. He wants to restore his function and esthetic with dental implants. However the over eruption of lower anterior teeth interferes with the space needed for upper implants; hence we decide to intrude mandibular incisors. The patient had all metal crown & …

Idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR) is a well-documented but poorly understood progressive disease that affects the TMJ. ICR can result in malocclusion, facial disfigurement, TMJ dysfunction, and pain. Some cases occur spontaneously, whereas others appear during orthodontic therapy or as sequelae to orthognathic surgical procedures. It is essential for orthodontists to recognize the onset of ICR in patients as early as possible .This article discusses practical aspects of recognizing and managing ICR in orthodontic patients by a combination of orthodontic and orthognathic surgery treatment.

The effect of oral appliances in treating mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patientis found to be similar to continuous positive airway pressure in a study in 1955. Oral appliances make tongue or mandible forward position to increase airway space. Mandibular advancement devices and tongue retaining devices are oral appliances used in clinic today. Long term effects of oral appliances are discussed in three parts in this article: airway, dentition and temporomadibular joint. Total airway volume increases after using oral appliances. Overbite and overjet are found decreasing. Oral appliances cannot worsen the temporomadibular joint problems.

Bimaxillary protrusion is characterized by protrusive and proclined upper and lower incisors. Since patients with bimaxillary protrusion generally have perfectly good occlusion, orthodontic treatment is often solely sought to correct the protrusive profile and less concern about the airway space change. Typical orthodontic treatment includes extraction of the bimaxillary premolars and anterior tooth retraction, with maximum anchorage. Recently, the relationship between maximum anchorage and tooth displacement is well recognized, retrospective upper airway analysis after retraction of the large incisors remains to be established. This article review previous studies about the pharyngeal airway changes after orthodontic treatment of class I bimaxillary …

Effects Of Removable Orthopedic Appliance On Upper Airway Dimensions, Yu-Jen Hsu, Stella Ya-Hui Yang, Emily Yi-Min Liu, Yi-Jane Chen, Wen-Chung Chang 2022 Department of Dentistry and Graduate Institute of Clinical Dentistry, School of Dentistry, National Taiwan University, Department of Orthodontics, National Taiwan University Hospital

Effects Of Removable Orthopedic Appliance On Upper Airway Dimensions, Yu-Jen Hsu, Stella Ya-Hui Yang, Emily Yi-Min Liu, Yi-Jane Chen, Wen-Chung Chang

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Growth modification by using removable orthopedic appliances has been commonly used in growing patients to correct maxilla-mandibular jaw discrepancy. Previous studies reported the different effects of various orthopedic appliances on the airway dimension. Low-pull headgear therapy may induce a short-term decrease of the upper airway dimension in Class II patients. Face mask therapy seems to be associated with the increase of upper airway dimension in growing Class III patients. However, mandible protruding appliances can increase the upper airway dimension, especially in the Class II patients with mandible retrusion.

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) makes up approximately 75% to 80% of childhood leukemia. Longterm survivors through current medical management make orthodontic treatment available. However, the risk of these patients should be carefully evaluated. After the patient has completed all cancer therapy and has at least a 2-year event-free survival, orthodontic treatment can be started. Patients with ALL sometimes have to accept a compromised treatment result and finish the treatment earlier than normal due to the concerns of recurrence. To treat the maxillary canine-first premolar transposition require a lengthy treatment time. However, every effort should be made to bring the transposed …

Literature Review: Corticotomy-Assisted Orthodontic Treatment, Lei Kang, Shou-Hsin Kuang, Tzu-Ying Wu

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Corticotomy-assisted orthodontics (CAOT) can shorten orthodontic treatment time by increasing regional acceleratory phenomenon. The periodontal wound healing caused by corticotomy are similar to the periodontal tissue reaction induced by orthodontic force; if the two phenomena could be accumulated and both enhancing bone remodeling, orthodontic tooth movement should be accelerated theoretically. There are many different kinds of procedures and strategies in the clinical application of corticotomy-assisted orthodontics, but when the cost and benefit ratio for the patients are thoroughly considered, using minimal invasive corticotomy to assist orthodontic treatment may be more practical. As for the clinical efficacy of minimal invasive corticotomy, …
