The Relationship Of Molybdenum To Iron Status In Pregnancy And Anemia In Rats And Humans, Jo Ann Mortensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Weanling male rats were made anemic and fed diets supplemented with 20 ppm iron and/or 2 ppm molybdenum. A decrease in serum iron was observed in the rats supplemented only with iron and a significant decrease in hemoglobin was observed in rats given no supplementation.

In a second experiment, pregnant female rats were also fed diets supplemented with 20 ppm iron and/or 2 ppm molybdenum. An inverse relationship was apparent between iron and copper in both the serum and the liver of the female rats. The livers of their pups displayed an inverse relationship between molybdenum and copper. Hemoglobin in …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Over an 18-year period, beginning in 1955, a group of subjects has been studied six times to determine if any relationship exists among serum cholesterol levels, body weight, health status, diet quality and stress or anxiety. For the first four test periods, extending through ages 7 to 16 years, there were 321 subjects. Later, in 1968, 86 of the original 321 subjects, now aged 19-22 years, were able to participate in a follow-up study. The 1974 study was able to involve 30 of the original 321 subjects now aged 26-29 years. Findings show that from approximately the fifteenth year onward …

Spray Drying Process For Encapsulation Of Condiment Particles, Lawrence A. Johnson, Edgar J. Beyn Apr 1976

Spray Drying Process For Encapsulation Of Condiment Particles, Lawrence A. Johnson, Edgar J. Beyn

Lawrence A. Johnson

An improvement in process for producing encapsulated condiment particles by spray drying wherein said spray-dried particles are cooled while they are maintained in gas-suspended condition in order to prevent them from agglomerating upon collection. The process involves contacting a first spray of particles with cold air to assist in atomizing it; then spraying a second particle stream which contacts the first. The particle stream which is formed, is then discharged through a heating zone, after which it is cooled while being maintained in a gas suspended condition. Finally, the resulting coated particles are separated from the gas.

Essential Tyrosine Residues In Calf Liver Uridine Diphosphoglucose Pyrophosphorylase, E.C. 2.7.7.9., Robert Carl Bachmann May 1972

Essential Tyrosine Residues In Calf Liver Uridine Diphosphoglucose Pyrophosphorylase, E.C. 2.7.7.9., Robert Carl Bachmann

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The catalytic necessity of tyrosine residues in uridine diphospho- glucose pyrophosphorylase [E.C. 2.7.7.9] was investigated. Chemical modification of the pyrophosphorylase by N-acetylimidazole indicated that tyrosine residues were essential for activity. Approximately 23 of 112 tyrosines per molecule of 475,000 Daltons could be 0-acetylated. Solvent perturbation difference spectroscopy supported this number of exposed tyrosine side chains and in conjunction with chemical modification indicated that at least 11 to 12 tyrosyl residues per protein molecule are fully exposed. it her subst rate, uridine t riphosphate or uridine diphosphoglucose, afforded significant protection against inactivation by N-acetylimidazole.

The significance of these tyrosine residues is …

The paper also provides the results of a dietary survey and a survey of economic groups.

Nutrition During Pregnancy, Lactation And Infancy, Minodokht Froozani May 1968

Nutrition During Pregnancy, Lactation And Infancy, Minodokht Froozani

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In many countries in South and East Asia, most diets are defective in quality, even when there is not a severe shortage of food. They do. not provide an adequate quantity of essential nutrients. One of the most severe deficiencies is in good quality protein. The solution to this problem is to produce and provide the right kinds of foods and to establish national food production policies which should make it possible to plan a better balanced diet based on sound nutritional principles and modern knowledge of nutritional requirements. Some degree of undernutrition, over-nutrition, or malnutrition occurs in most European …

The Problem Of Low Solids-Not-Fat In Milk, Laurence C. Snook

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

TO the consumer of milk, the solids-not-fat fractions is of prime importance.

This contains the protein, the minerals and the milk-sugar which collectively make milk such a valuable and palatable food.

If we wish to encourage increased consumption of milk as a health food it is essential that quality must be maintained and if possible improved.

Producers and distributors must always remember that if maximum sales are to be obtained, the needs of the consumer must remain paramount.

Reduced Ascorbic Acid Content Of Potatoes Grown With And Without Straw Mulching And Irrigation In Eastern Nebraska, H. O. Werner, Ruth M. Leverton, Mary R. Gram

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

Potatoes harvested from home gardens and in commercial early-producing fields in the Midwest are an important low-cost source of ascorbic acid from late June into September. The major portion of the early commercial crop in Nebraska (harvested mostly in August) is produced with irrigation. Straw or litter mulching is a well established practice in the nonirrigated garden and farm potato patches. The value of these cultural methods for increasing yield is well known, but prior to this study little was known about their influence on the ascorbic acid content of the tubers, or about the persistence of any such influence …
