Saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) is a soil property linked to ecosystem services and it is often used in septic tank suitability determination at various scales. Field and laboratory measurements of Ksat and septic tank suitability are time-consuming and expensive. Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO) data are available for the United States, but limitations of using SSURGO data for Ksat and septic suitability determination are not fully understood. In the first chapter of this dissertation, we create original annual average years of education across the major, present-day states of India from 1951 to 2011 in line with work done by Turner et al.(2007). Drawing from multiple volumes of the decennial censuses, Planning Commission reports, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation databases and historical atlases to account for territorial changes since independence, our data show that the average Indian worker had less than a primary education even as late as 2011. However, this is still significantly more than the years of education of the average Indian, with the disparity …

The reproduction of narratives of modernity and teleological progression were reproduced in numerous African cities and actualized in policies related to urban development. This paper not only describes the process and results of a qualitative study, but also presents the implementation plan for an NGO that will work with the women of Imasayi to implement community-wide development projects. The population of English learners (ELs) is growing rapidly across the U.S. Concurrently, elementary students throughout the country are being required to produce more sophisticated writing products than ever before as a result of the heavy emphasis on writing instruction in the recently adopted Common Core State Standards. This qualitative study examined how to best support ELs as they develop as writers. It also addressed the strong need to investigate the impact of students discussing ideas with a partner throughout the writing process.

Coaching Age-Group Swimming: Contradicting Perceptions And Practices, Samuel Dwyer Davy

The current study investigates coach’s perceptions of sport specialization in age group swimming. Eleven swim coaches working with athletes under the age of 14 were interviewed. Despite the evidence in support of sport diversification over sport specialization, the study found coaches involved in youth swimming overwhelmingly support early sport specialization. This finding contradicts the literature. Three themes emerged: (1) support of sport sampling, (2) sacrifices connected to sport participation, and (3) coaches need for control. All 11 coaches acknowledged the role of other sports in the development of their athletes, but all 11 provided explanations as to why their athletes …

Much less is taught about students who experience quiet conflict, despite childhood anxiety being one of the most prevalent disorders that children face. This research examines the intentions and consequences of the British colonial endeavor in the country of Uganda, East Africa. Focusing on issues of gender, education, and language, it provides a survey of the multifaceted implications of the colonial era. It is also based on two weeks of field research spent in country the previous summer, conducting interviews with educators and administrators as well as employees and volunteers of nongovernmental organizations. The notochord is a rod-like embryological structure, which plays a vital role in the development of the vertebrate. Though embryological, remnants of this structure have been observed in the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral discs of normal adults. Pathologically, these remnants can give rise to slow-growing and recurrent notochord-derived tumors called chordomas. Using standard search engines, the literature was reviewed regarding the anatomy, embryology, molecular development, and pathology of the human notochord. Clinicians who interpret imaging or treat patients with pathologies linked to the notochord should have a good working knowledge of its development and pathology.

Each year, Louisiana loses 20 to 25 square miles of land. If land loss persists at the current rate, a forced migration of the human population with serious implications may be warranted. Although studies have measured land use/land cover change in southeast Louisiana over multiple decades, a recent analysis of landscape changes since Hurricane Katrina’s landfall in 2005 is needed to identify areas with chronic long-term wetland losses and associated economic development patterns. Purpose: A relationship between depression and the development of breast cancer has not been convincingly shown in the research conducted over the past three decades. Methods: In an effort to better understand the conflicting results, a review was conducted focusing on the methodological problems associated with this literature, including time frame between the assessment of depression and the diagnosis of breast cancer and the use of somatic items in measuring depression. Fifteen breast cancer prospective studies were reviewed. Results: While twelve of the studies found positive associations between depression and breast cancer development, three studies found negative associations. With regards …
