Latin American Energy Policies
Reliable and affordable energy services are essential to the modern world. Secure access to these services and the stability of their prices are key concerns for policymakers worldwide. For countries that are predominantly dependant on imported fossil fuels for their electricity generation, there are many associated long term risks in this regard, including the potential economic disruptions due to petroleum prices volatility, the vulnerability of fuel shipping and storage systems to terrorism and climate change impacts (i.e. increased strength and propensity of hurricanes), and negative environmental impacts associated with fuel combustion. However, there exist viable alternatives to the current patterns …
Chemosensory Behavior And Development Of African Male Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Kathryn R. Bagley
Chemosensory Behavior And Development Of African Male Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Kathryn R. Bagley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
African elephants are a polygynous species that raise offspring in a matriarchal society. Males disperse, spend time in male groups, and search for mates when mature. Urinary chemical signals play an important role in detecting reproductively active females. African male elephants develop movement, social and chemosensory behaviors over four major life changes. The first goal of this study was to compare behavior among four classes of wild African male elephants in Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa. The second goal was to determine if adult captive African male elephants distinguish between urine from conspecific females in receptive and non-receptive estrous …

Efforts To Promote Tourism As A Catalyst For Urban Redevelopment In Florida: Insights From The Anthropology Of Tourism And An Annotated Bibliography., John F. Collins
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Tourism is a major contributor to the global economy and is an agent of cultural change. Tourism has been utilized throughout the United States as an engine of economic renewal in the promotion of redevelopment within many of our most celebrated urban centers. Urban tourism as it is found within Florida is explored. A chapter is dedicated to Tampa, Florida. Anthropology has spent little time or effort in attempting to understand the complexities of urban tourism and what it means for the cities of 21st century. The anthropology of tourism is utilized in exploring the political economy of tourism within …
Embryonic Expression Of Pre-Initiation Dna Replication Factors In Xenopus Laevis, Brian Walter, Jonathan Henry
Embryonic Expression Of Pre-Initiation Dna Replication Factors In Xenopus Laevis, Brian Walter, Jonathan Henry
Brian Walter
We examined the expression of various DNA replication factors, including: cdc45, the factors of the GINS heterotetramer (Sld5, Psf1, Psf2, Psf3), and PCNA, in Xenopus laevis during embryonic development via whole mount in situ hybridization. For the most part, these factors were expressed in similar patterns, with some subtle variations, throughout development within the anterior CNS, pharyngeal arches, and various placodes. More significant variations were also observed, including expression of only Psf1 and Psf2 in the pronephros and unique Psf2 expression in the somitic mesoderm. Overall, these results suggest that common regulatory mechanisms are involved in the transcriptional deployment of …

To Walk The Earth In Safety 5th Edition (Fy2003), Us Dos Pm/Wra
Global CWD Repository
This fifth edition of To Walk the Earth in Safety contains information on specific programs and accomplishments of the U.S. Humanitarian Mine Action Program through the end of 2003. Although the United States did begin providing substantial mine action assistance to Afghanistan as early as 1988 and then to Cambodia and some other countries starting in 1991, the formal program as we know it today really began in 1993. Thus, 2003 is a milestone, marking ten uninterrupted years of genuine and signifi cant U.S. action to eradicate persistent landmines—both anti-personnel and anti-vehicle—as well as unexploded ordnance wherever they threaten civilian …

Development Of Chemosensory Behaviors In African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana) And Male Responses To Female Urinary Compounds, Helen Loizi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chemosignals play a vital role in the social and reproductive interactions of elephants. As with many social, sexually dimorphic mammals, elephants experience major developmental stages of nursing, weaning, pubescence and adulthood. Some stages occur at different ages for males and females. I observed the trunk tip, chemosensory behaviors of male and female African elephants in each of the four major developmental stages at Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa. Young female elephants showed the highest rates of chemosensory behavior among females; whereas, pubescent and adult males showed the highest rates among males. The sexes differed in the prevalence of chemosensory …

This thesis compares and contrasts the portrayal of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) as presented by Egyptian intellectuals, using the newspapers as a medium, and the message disseminated by the ICPD. The primary objective of the thesis is to assess the validity of the concerns of some of the arguments put forth by the Egyptian intellectuals by reference to an analytical discussion of these issues within a global debate as well as concurrent debates within Egypt. Locating these concerns in both the Egyptian and global contexts will identify the nature of the controversy and enable the thesis …

Assisted Reproduction Versus Spontaneous Conception: A Comparison Of The Developmental Outcomes In Twins, Lisa Kelly-Vance, Kristine S. Anthis, Howard Needelman
Psychology Faculty Publications
The use of assisted reproductive technology is increasing rapidly. Research, although sparse, has resulted in inconsistent findings as to the developmental prognosis for infants conceived by assisted reproductive techniques such as in vitro fertilization and the use of fertility drugs. In the present study, the authors compared twins who were spontaneously conceived with those who were conceived through assisted reproductive technology. The authors found differences in birth weight and gestational age. Infants conceived by assisted reproductive technology fared worse than did those who were spontaneously conceived. The authors found no differences between the groups in mental development at 24 months …
The Question Of Non-Trade Issues In The Wto From A Developing Country Perspective, Cecilia Alzamora
The Question Of Non-Trade Issues In The Wto From A Developing Country Perspective, Cecilia Alzamora
LLM Theses and Essays
Many developed countries have proposed enlarging the mandate of the WTO to protect the environment and labor rights. The idea was fiercely challenged by third-world countries becoming an unsurpassable obstacle in the negotiations. For supporters of a stronger WTO, the TRIPS Agreement is a good example that underscores the need to back up the trading system to enforce standards. This analysis attempts to demonstrate that there are less controversial alternatives to achieve environmental and social goals. The different nature of IPR and labor rights makes the TRIPS Agreement a weak example to prove the goodness of enforcing standards through the …
The Ethnic Question In Law And Development, Lan Cao
The Ethnic Question In Law And Development, Lan Cao
Michigan Law Review
World on Fire: How Exporting Free Market Democracy Breeds Ethnic Hatred and Global Instability, by Professor Amy Chua, is an analytically complex narrative of contemporary ethnic violence in the current era of globalization. Although such violence has historical roots, according to Chua it has also been fueled by free-market forces and democratization. The book is a forceful and provocative indictment of the current U.S. policy of promoting and exporting markets and democracy to developing and formerly communist, market-transitional countries. In her book, Professor Chua applies her thesis - that ethnicity, global capitalism, and democracy are a volatile mix - …
Development And Characterization Of Eukaryotic Biomimetic Liposomes, Bradley Jay Taylor
Development And Characterization Of Eukaryotic Biomimetic Liposomes, Bradley Jay Taylor
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study developed and characterized phospholipid vesicles, or liposomes, that mimic cell surfaces. Microemulsified liposomes contained biotinylated phosphatidylethanolamine, allowing them to be immobilized to avidin-coated glass. Laminin (LN), glycosphingolipids (GMl and GM3), and Escherichia coli's mechanosensitive channel of large conductance (EcoMscL) were embedded into liposome membranes. It was determined whether these embedded molecules exhibited their physiological roles of adhesion, cell recognition, and mechanosensation, respectively. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was employed to examine the interaction of fluorescently probed proteins, toxins, and bacteria with the immobilized microemulsified liposomes. Capture of individual and simultaneous multiple species of bacteria by GMl, GM3, …

The Effects Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs) On Nerve Growth Factor (Ngf) In The Developing Frog, Xenopus Laevis, Cari Delong
Honors Theses
Polychlorinated biphenyls are ubiquitous, persistent environmental contaminants that cause a variety of adverse health effects wildlife and humans. PCBs are the major contaminant in the Kalamazoo River Superfund Site, in which the Environmental Institute is funded to study. Projects at the Environmental Institute are focused on developing molecular biotechnology tools that will improve environmental risk assessment. Previous acute studies involved the exposure of developing tadpoles, Xenopus laevis to PCBs through aquarium water in order to measure gene expression. Nerve growth factor (NGF) gene expression showed changes in these previous studies. NGF is a neurotrophic factor that regulates the growth and …
Perceptions Of Development In Ghana, Caitlin Hurley
Perceptions Of Development In Ghana, Caitlin Hurley
African Diaspora ISPs
Entitled "Perceptions of Development in Ghana," this work looks at how the concept of development is perceived in Ghana. In western, developed nations, development exists for the large part only as a concept. This paper shows, however, that in Ghana development takes assumes many forms. The work seeks to explore the essence of development by asking questions, such as: what does development mean? How does it manifest itself? How is the problem of underdevelopment approached by the Ghanaians that I interviewed? We will find that development is the subject of an open-ended dialogue, which sees no end in sight.
Agroforestry Adoption In Mexico: Using Keynes To Better Understand Farmer Decision-Making, James F. Casey
Agroforestry Adoption In Mexico: Using Keynes To Better Understand Farmer Decision-Making, James F. Casey
James F Casey
The objective of this paper is to empirically test the hypothesis that reducing uncertainty for farmers through investment in human capital increases the likelihood of participation in an agroforestry development program. A model based on Keynes’s notion of profit expectations and “weight” is developed in order to gain some insight into agroforestry adoption behavior. Data was collected near the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in the state of Campeche in southeastern Mexico. One hundred seventy-five farmers were interviewed from January through March of 1998. Results support the hypothesis that human capital investment improves the likelihood of participation in an agroforestry development program.

Mediation And The Transformation Of American Labor Unions, Ann C. Hodges
Law Faculty Publications
First, the Article analyzes in more detail the changes in the workplace that have led to various proposals for reform. Then the Article looks at the potential for mediation of claims that do not arise out of the collective bargaining agreement, analyzing the possible benefits from the point of view of employers, employees and unions. Next, some of the issues and obstacles to mediation are reviewed. Ultimately the Article concludes that the benefits of mediation outweigh the disadvantages and that in most collective bargaining relationships the obstacles should not prevent either negotiation of such provisions or their successful use for …

Efectos De Las Plantaciones De Árboles Exóticos Y El Movimiento Mapuche, Shannon Ryan
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This is a paper about my interpretations of the forest industry in the IX region of Chile and the effects it has as I saw and heard about them from the people I talked to. It is not an objective paper and my own perspective is evident throughout. What I think brings credibility to the paper is the fact that it reveals a reality that I experienced directly, in the communities and offices of the people who lives are effected by the plantations. I realize that a great deal of the paper sounds very sensationalized, but it is because I …

In The Beginning Was The Law… An Intellectual Odyssey, Patrick Mcauslan
In The Beginning Was The Law… An Intellectual Odyssey, Patrick Mcauslan
The Practice of Law and Development: Socio-Legal Approaches
Is there such a distinctive phenomenon in practice as "law and development?" Isn’t all law directed towards some kind of development in the sense that new law – judicial decisions, legislation, administrative directives – change the existing law and so is a development from that existing law and in changing the existing law, change, in howsoever slight a degree, the economy and society of which the law is a part. Law and Development did not start in the 1960s when American legal scholars discovered the developing world nor did it end in the 1970s when, starved of funds to pursue …
