Determining What Materials To Develop, Robert E. Norton
Determining What Materials To Develop, Robert E. Norton
International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference
How do you determine what materials to develop? By using a new model that is so efficient and effective, it practically guarantees the production of relevant high-quality CBE materials at the lowest possible cost. The SCID model was carefully developed to incorporate the critical tasks needed to develop the kinds of CBE curriculum and instructional materials needed to train tomorrow’s work force today. Twenty-three components—a few optional but most essential—are grouped into five phases: Curriculum analysis, Curriculum design, Instructional Development, Training Implementation, and Program Evaluation. This model has been used since 1990 to train over 1000 curriculum specialists, and training …

The United States first became involved in humanitarian demining in 1988 when it sent a team to assess the landmine situation in Afghanistan. Five years later, U.S. demining-related programs were underway in Afghanistan and in seven other countries. By the end of 2000, we will have provided more than $400 million to 36 countries for various humanitarian demining efforts such as deminer training, mine awareness, mine clearance, and orthopedic assistance to, and socioeconomic reintegration programs for, landmine accident survivors and their families. More than $100 million of that amount will be spent in Fiscal Year 2000, the largest commitment of any …
Who Are The Stakeholders In Environmental Risk Decisions - How Should They Be Involved, Mary R. English
Who Are The Stakeholders In Environmental Risk Decisions - How Should They Be Involved, Mary R. English
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
[Excerpt] "In the United States, as in other countries, public participation in environmental policy decisions has come a long way. In its infancy, it was limited to public hearings concerning decisions that were, for all practical purposes, "done deals." Overturning public agency decisions could be accomplished only through expensive, often protracted, usually futile court cases, and then only if the issue was justiciable and the plaintiff had the funds and standing to sue. In recent decades - especially since the 1960s - opportunities for public participation in the U.S. have been overhauled. Access to documents has been assured through federal …

Peer Groups And Adolescent Development In Traditional And Alternative High Schools, Diana D. Coyl
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study explored the influence of peer relationships on students who have a history of school difficulties. Peer Relationship Surveys I and II assessed school-based peer group status, relationship qualities, school-related behaviors, attitudes, and intentions (BAIs); substance (i.e., alcohol and tobacco) use; and identity development in relation to experiences at traditional (survey I, retrospective accounts) and alternative high schools (survey II). Both surveys were administered in five classrooms to students at an alternative high school (i.e. Cache High) during the first academic term (August 1999) and in January 2000. Eighty-five and 83 predominantly Caucasian adolescents between the ages of 15 …
A Case Study Of The Undergraduate Biomedical Research Component Of A Federally Funded Minority Student Development Program, Nancy A. Drickey
A Case Study Of The Undergraduate Biomedical Research Component Of A Federally Funded Minority Student Development Program, Nancy A. Drickey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Tremendous growth in the biomedical science workforce has increased the need for trained scientists. The current workforce is severely underrepresented by minority groups, particularly Native Americans. To address this issue, the federal government funded programs that encouraged Native American students to participate in undergraduate biomedical science courses and research. One such program, funded by the National Institutes of Health, is the Minority Student Development Program at Northern Arizona University. Little research has been done on educational programs for minority populations.
The purpose of this study was to identify and describe qualities and characteristics of the undergraduate research component of the …
Children's Stress Behaviors And Developmentally Appropriate Practice In Family Child Care Homes, Chih-Ying Chang
Children's Stress Behaviors And Developmentally Appropriate Practice In Family Child Care Homes, Chih-Ying Chang
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study investigated and qualitatively compared differences in children's stress reactions across two levels of developmentally appropriate practice in family child care homes. Data were collected through observations.
Six children, five boys and one girl from six different family child care homes, between the ages of 36 and 60 months, were observed for the type and frequency of stress behaviors. The six family child care homes were divided into two groups based on more or less use of appropriate practices, and they were observed for the use of appropriate practices. Three one-hour observations were held in each family child care …
Government Size And Economic Growth: The Case Of Liberia, James Guseh
Government Size And Economic Growth: The Case Of Liberia, James Guseh
African Social Science Review
Since 1960, the size of the government in Liberia has grown considerably, while the rate of economic growth has declined. This study investigates whether growth in government size promotes or retards economic growth. The study finds that growth in the size of government has been associated with a slowdown in economic growth in Liberia over the period 1960-86. Thus, a lesser role of government in economic activity may be the best route towards economic growth and development in the country.
Civil Society And Democratization Processes In Africa, Andrew I. E. Ewoh
Civil Society And Democratization Processes In Africa, Andrew I. E. Ewoh
African Social Science Review
This article draws from some theoretical and practical issues that emerge with connection to democracy and civil society in exploring democratization processes in Africa. It discusses the political economy of democracy in order to inspire the creation of popular democracy. It concludes that whereas democracy can bring new hopes and anxieties for the African people, its leaders and the emerging democratic governments must support the establishment of civil society to cement the need for pluralism and multi-party politics on the continent. Also, it encourages each sovereign state to respect the rule of law, human rights and allow the private enterprise …

Xenopus Laevis Gelatinase B (Xmmp-9): Development, Regeneration, And Wound Healing, Brian Walter, Maria Carinato, Jonathan Henry
Brian Walter
It has been argued that matrix metalloproteinases play important roles in cellular differentiation and regeneration in certain systems. While studying changes in gene expression associated with the phenomena of cornea/lens transdifferentiation ("lens regeneration"), which takes place in the larva of Xenopus laevis, we identified the Xenopus gelatinase B gene. The open reading frame is homologous to other gelatinase B genes identified in other species and encodes all of the domains characteristic of this protein. Xenopus gelatinase B (Xmmp-9) is first expressed during early tail-bud stages in a subset of mesodermal cells scattered throughout the body. Expression is also seen in …

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
This approach to humanitarian demining differs from generally accepted methodology. It has not yet been tried, and the purpose of this article is to ensure that the general concept is placed in the public domain, where it may be debated and modified without considerations of intellectual property. Interval Research Corporation, where this idea originated, is not in the business of mine clearance, or of manufacturing mine clearance systems, so the idea is being passed along to the community best capable of analyzing it.
