Mutations In Mylpf Cause A Novel Segmental Amyoplasia That Manifests As Distal Arthrogryposis, Jessica X. Chong, Jared C. Talbot, Emily M. Teets, Samantha Previs

Open Access archive

We identified ten persons in six consanguineous families with distal arthrogryposis (DA) who had congenital contractures, scoliosis, and short stature. Exome sequencing revealed that each affected person was homozygous for one of two different rare variants (c.470G>T [p.Cys157Phe] or c.469T>C [p.Cys157Arg]) affecting the same residue of myosin light chain, phosphorylatable, fast skeletal muscle (MYLPF). In a seventh family, a c.487G>A (p.Gly163Ser) variant in MYLPF arose de novo in a father, who transmitted it to his son. In an eighth family comprised of seven individuals with dominantly inherited DA, a c.98C>T (p.Ala33Val) variant segregated in all four …

Myosin Heavy Chain-Embryonic Regulates Skeletal Muscle Differentiation During Mammalian Development, Megha Agarwal, Akashi Sharma, Pankaj Kumar, Amit Kumar

Open Access archive

Myosin heavy chain-embryonic (MyHC-emb) is a skeletal muscle-specific contractile protein expressed during muscle development. Mutations in MYH3, the gene encoding MyHC-emb, lead to Freeman-Sheldon and Sheldon-Hall congenital contracture syndromes. Here, we characterize the role of MyHC-emb during mammalian development using targeted mouse alleles. Germline loss of MyHC-emb leads to neonatal and postnatal alterations in muscle fiber size, fiber number, fiber type and misregulation of genes involved in muscle differentiation. Deletion of Myh3 during embryonic myogenesis leads to the depletion of the myogenic progenitor cell pool and an increase in the myoblast pool, whereas fetal myogenesis-specific deletion of Myh3 causes the …

Lloyd Hitoshi Mayer, Creating a Tax Space for Social Enterprise, in The Cambridge Handbook of Social Enterprise Law 157 (Benjamin Means & Joseph W. Yockey eds., 2018)

While still relatively few in number compared to traditional nonprofit and for-profit organizations, the rise of social enterprises represents a possible disruption of not only existing models of doing business but also areas of law that in many respects have seen little fundamental change for decades. One such area is domestic tax law, where social enterprises currently find themselves subject to the rules of for-profit activities and entities. Here, both scholars …

Seasonal Dimorphism In Gastropod Hatchling Size: What Can We Learn From Egg Mass Morphology And Deposition Site Conditions?, Lily A. Harrison Jan 2016

Seasonal Dimorphism In Gastropod Hatchling Size: What Can We Learn From Egg Mass Morphology And Deposition Site Conditions?, Lily A. Harrison

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Egg size is one of the most important features of marine invertebrate reproduction because it provides insight into developmental patterns, offspring size, and adult investment per offspring. Intraspecific variation in egg size and the resulting hatchling size may depend on many factors including environmental and maternal conditions and geographic location. Therefore, both the season in which eggs are laid and the spatial heterogeneity of deposition sites may influence egg size and hatchling size. Natica chemnitzii deposits egg masses on sandy beaches along the coast of the Bay of Panama. During the wet (non-upwelling) season hatchling size is unimodal. However, monthly …

Personal Interpersonal Competence Assessment: A Self-Report Instrument For Student Development, Craig R. Seal, Krystal Miguel, Abdulaziz Alzamil, Stefanie E. Naumann, Joanna Royce-Davis, Donald Drost

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

The purpose of this paper is to assess the internal consistency of a revised instrument, the Personal-Interpersonal Competence Assessment (PICA); derived from the earlier Social Emotional Development Instrument (SED-I). There were three primary rationales for the revision. First, and most importantly, to better align the operational factors with the conceptual definitions. Second, was to clearly position the construct within the broader context of personal and interpersonal competence, rather than the emotional intelligence literature. Third, to provide a developmental, rather than a diagnostic assessment for personal-interpersonal competence. As with the earlier SED-I model and measure, the intent of the research is …

Dimensional Change Card Sort Performance Associated With Age-Related Differences In Functional Connectivity Of Lateral Prefrontal Cortex, Fredrick Ezekiel, Rachael Bosma, J. Bruce Morton Jan 2013

Dimensional Change Card Sort Performance Associated With Age-Related Differences In Functional Connectivity Of Lateral Prefrontal Cortex, Fredrick Ezekiel, Rachael Bosma, J. Bruce Morton

Paediatrics Publications

The Dimensional Change Card Sort (DCCS) is a standard procedure for assessing executive functioning early in development. In the task, participants switch from sorting cards one way (e.g., by color) to sorting them a different way (e.g., by shape). Traditional accounts associate age-related changes in DCCS performance with circumscribed changes in lateral prefrontal cortex (lPFC) functioning, but evidence of age-related differences in the modulation of lPFC activity by switching is mixed. The current study therefore tested for possible age-related differences in functional connectivity of lPFC with regions that comprise a larger cognitive control network. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data …

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

The current study, using a factor level analysis approach, validity of the Social Emotional Development Instrument (SED education. Although there are a multitude of models and measures that borrow from the premise of emotional intelligence (EI), very few current instruments focus exclusive developmental path of social emotional competenc prior validity studies with these measures fail to include a full spectrum of potential convergent and discriminant analyses assessed at the factor level. SED-I is a reliable, robust and comprehensive measurement for assessing college students’ social emotional competency changes. Limitation discussed.

Factors Influencing Development Of Cryptogamic Soil Crusts In Utah Deserts, David C. Anderson, Kimball T. Harper, Ralph C. Holmgren Jan 1982

Factors Influencing Development Of Cryptogamic Soil Crusts In Utah Deserts, David C. Anderson, Kimball T. Harper, Ralph C. Holmgren

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

The relation of some physical and chemical soil characteristics to cryptogamic crust development was determined from sites in semidesert regions of southern Utah. The effects of grazing on cryptogamic crust development also was examined. Electrical conductivity, percentage silt, and soil phosphorus were found to be correlated with well-developed cryptogamic crusts. Both total cryptogamic cover and the number of cryptogamic species decreased under grazing pressure. The management of rangelands, especially in arid regions, would be strengthened by understanding the role of cryptogamic crusts and considering them in range management decisions.
