Interfacial Thermal Transport In Monolayer Mos2- And Graphene-Based Devices, Zlatan Aksamija, Amin Salehi-Khojin, Cameron J. Foss, Arnab K. Majee, Fatemeh Khalili-Araghi 2017 University of Illinois at Chicago

Interfacial Thermal Transport In Monolayer Mos2- And Graphene-Based Devices, Zlatan Aksamija, Amin Salehi-Khojin, Cameron J. Foss, Arnab K. Majee, Fatemeh Khalili-Araghi

Zlatan Aksamija

In many device architectures based on 2D materials, a major part of the heat generated in hot-spots dissipates in the through-plane direction where the interfacial thermal resistances can significantly restrain the heat removal
capability of the device. Despite its importance, there is an enormous (1–2 orders of magnitude) disagreement in the literature on the interfacial thermal transport characteristics of MoS2 and other transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) (0.1–14 MW m−2 K−1). In this report, the thermal boundary conductance (TBC) across MoS2 and graphene monolayers with SiO2/Si and sapphire substrates is systematically investigated using a
custom-made electrical thermometry platform followed by 3D …

Dynamic Range Limitations Of Low-Noise Microwave Transistors At Cryogenic Temperatures, Ahmet Hakan Coskun 2017 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Dynamic Range Limitations Of Low-Noise Microwave Transistors At Cryogenic Temperatures, Ahmet Hakan Coskun

Doctoral Dissertations

Dynamic range is an important metric that specifies the limits of input signal amplitude for the ideal operation of a given receiver. The low end of dynamic range is defined by the noise floor whereas the upper limit is determined by large-signal distortion. While dynamic range can be predicted in the temperature range where compact transistor models are valid, the lack of large-signal models at temperatures below -55 C prevents the prediction and optimization of dynamic range for applications that require cryogenic cooling. For decades, the main goal concerning the performance of these applications was lowering the noise floor of …

Real-Time Camera Tracking System Using Optical Flow Feature Points, Daniel D. Doyle, Alan L. Jennings, Jonathan T. Black 2017 Air Force Institute of Technology

Real-Time Camera Tracking System Using Optical Flow Feature Points, Daniel D. Doyle, Alan L. Jennings, Jonathan T. Black

AFIT Patents

A new apparatus and method for tracking a moving object with a moving camera provides a real-time, narrow field-of-view, high resolution and on target image by combining commanded motion with an optical flow algorithm for deriving motion and classifying background. Commanded motion means that movement of the pan, tilt and zoom (PTZ) unit is “commanded” by a computer, instead of being observed by the camera, so that the pan, tilt and zoom parameters are known, as opposed to having to be determined, significantly reducing the computational requirements for tracking a moving object. The present invention provides a single camera pan …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Ionic thermoelectric materials, for example, polyelectrolytes such as polystyrene sulfonate sodium (PSSNa), constitute a new class of materials which are attracting interest because of their large Seebeck coefficient and the possibility that they could be used in ionic thermoelectric SCs (ITESCs) and field effect transistors. However, pure polyelectrolyte membranes are not robust or flexible. In this paper, the preparation of ionic thermoelectric paper using a simple, scalable and cost-effective method is described. After a composite was fabricated with nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC), the resulting NFC–PSSNa paper is flexible and mechanically robust, which is desirable if it is to be used in …

Loss Model For Gallium Nitride Dc-Dc Buck Converter, Rushi P. Patel 2017 Mississippi State University

Loss Model For Gallium Nitride Dc-Dc Buck Converter, Rushi P. Patel

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

In recent years, more research has been done on Enhancement Mode Gallium Nitride (eGaN) converters, as the world is moving towards more power efficient converters. Power converters play a major role in efficiently controlling and converting electric energy used by machines, systems, and everyday products. The process to make converters more efficient was complicated and slow in the twentieth century. One of the important aspects in power electronics is to evaluate different losses and minimize losses to achieve high efficiency of the converter. With help of simulation tools such as MATLAB and LTspice, this process has become much faster and …

A Hardware One-Time Pad Prototype Generator For Localising Cloud Security, Paul Tobin, Lee Tobin, Michael mcKeever, Jonathan Blackledge 2017 Technological University Dublin

A Hardware One-Time Pad Prototype Generator For Localising Cloud Security, Paul Tobin, Lee Tobin, Michael Mckeever, Jonathan Blackledge

Conference papers

In this paper, we examine a system for encrypting data before storing in the Cloud. Adopting this system gives excellent security to stored data and complete control for accessing data by the client at different locations. The motivation for developing this personal encryption came about because of poor Cloud security and doubts over the safety of public encryption algorithms which might contain backdoors. However, side-channel attacks and other unwanted third-party interventions in Cloud security, probably contribute more to the poor security record history. These factors led to the development of a prototype for personalising security locally which defeats cryptanalysis. The …

Electronic And Magnetic Properties Of Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials Beyond Graphene And Their Gas Sensing Applications: Silicene, Germanene, And Boron Carbide, Sadegh Mehdi Aghaei

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The popularity of graphene owing to its unique properties has triggered huge interest in other two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials. Among them, silicene shows considerable promise for electronic devices due to the expected compatibility with silicon electronics. However, the high-end potential application of silicene in electronic devices is limited owing to the lack of an energy band gap. Hence, the principal objective of this research is to tune the electronic and magnetic properties of silicene related nanomaterials through first-principles models.

I first explored the impact of edge functionalization and doping on the stabilities, electronic, and magnetic properties of silicene nanoribbons (SiNRs) and …

Analysis Of Various Classification Techniques For Computer Aided Detection System Of Pulmonary Nodules In Ct, Barath Narayanan Narayanan, Russell C. Hardie, Temesguen Messay

Russell C. Hardie

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. It usually exhibits its presence with the formation of pulmonary nodules. Nodules are round or oval-shaped growth present in the lung. Computed Tomography (CT) scans are used by radiologists to detect such nodules. Computer Aided Detection (CAD) of such nodules would aid in providing a second opinion to the radiologists and would be of valuable help in lung cancer screening. In this research, we study various feature selection methods for the CAD system framework proposed in FlyerScan. Algorithmic steps of FlyerScan include (i) local contrast enhancement (ii) …

Design And Implementation Of Smart Sensors With Capabilities Of Process Fault Detection And Variable Prediction, An He 2017 The University of Western Ontario

Design And Implementation Of Smart Sensors With Capabilities Of Process Fault Detection And Variable Prediction, An He

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

A typical sensor consists of a sensing element and a transmitter. The major functions of a transmitter are limited to data acquisition and communication. The recently developed transmitters with ‘smart’ functions have been focused on easy setup/maintenance of the transmitter itself such as self-calibration and self-configuration. Recognizing the growing computational capabilities of microcontroller units (MCUs) used in these transmitters and underutilized computational resources, this thesis investigates the feasibility of adding additional functionalities to a transmitter to make it ‘smart’ without modifying its foot-print, nor adding supplementary hardware. Hence, a smart sensor is defined as sensing elements combined with a smart …

Recursive Non-Local Means Filter For Video Denoising, Redha A. Ali, Russell C. Hardie 2017 University of Dayton

Recursive Non-Local Means Filter For Video Denoising, Redha A. Ali, Russell C. Hardie

Russell C. Hardie

In this paper, we propose a computationally efficient algorithm for video denoising that exploits temporal and spatial redundancy. The proposed method is based on non-local means (NLM). NLM methods have been applied successfully in various image denoising applications. In the single-frame NLM method, each output pixel is formed as a weighted sum of the center pixels of neighboring patches, within a given search window. The weights are based on the patch intensity vector distances. The process requires computing vector distances for all of the patches in the search window. Direct extension of this method from 2D to 3D, for video …

Chaos-Based Cryptography For Cloud Computing, Paul Tobin, Lee Tobin, Michael mcKeever, Jonathan Blackledge 2017 Technological University Dublin

Chaos-Based Cryptography For Cloud Computing, Paul Tobin, Lee Tobin, Michael Mckeever, Jonathan Blackledge

Conference papers

Cloud computing and poor security issues have quadrupled over the last six years and with the alleged presence of backdoors in common encryption ciphers, has created a need for personalising the encryption process by the client. In 2007, two Microsoft employees gave a presentation ``On the Possibility of a backdoor in the NIST SP800-90 Dual Elliptic Curve Pseudo Random Number Generators'' and was linked in 2013 by the New York Times with notes leaked by Edward Snowden. This confirmed backdoors were placed, allegedly, in a number of encryption systems by the National Security Agency, which if true creates an urgent …

Efficient Macromodeling And Fast Transient Simulation Of High Speed Distributed Interconnects, Sadia Wahid 2017 The University of Western Ontario

Efficient Macromodeling And Fast Transient Simulation Of High Speed Distributed Interconnects, Sadia Wahid

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In the first part of the thesis, an efficient macromodeling technique based on Loewner Matrix (LM) approach has been presented to model multi-port distributed systems using tabulated noisy data. In the proposed method, Loewner Model data from previous rational approximation are used to create less noisy eigenvectors in an iterative manner. As a result, the biasing effect of the LM model approximated by the noisy data is reduced. It is illustrated that this method improves the accuracy of the Loewner Matrix modeling for noisy frequency data.

In the second part, a fast and robust algorithm is introduced for time-domain simulation …

Autonomous Speed Control For Kia Optima, Andrew J. Combs, Kyle Fugatt, Kevin McFall 2017 Kennesaw State University

Autonomous Speed Control For Kia Optima, Andrew J. Combs, Kyle Fugatt, Kevin Mcfall

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

The standard method for speed control is the cruise control system built into most modern vehicles. These systems employ a PID controller which actuates the accelerator thus, in turn, maintains the desired vehicle speed. The main drawback of such a system is that typically the cruise control will only engage above 25 mph. The goal of this paper is to describe a system which we used to control vehicle speed from a stop to any desired speed using an Arduino microcontroller and a CAN BUS shield, from where autonomous features can be built upon. With this system, we were able …

Smart Sensing Skin For Detection And Localization Of Fatigue Cracks, Sari Kharroub, Simon Laflamme, Chunhui Song, Daji Qiao, Brent M. Phares, Jian Li 2017 Iowa State University

Smart Sensing Skin For Detection And Localization Of Fatigue Cracks, Sari Kharroub, Simon Laflamme, Chunhui Song, Daji Qiao, Brent M. Phares, Jian Li

Daji Qiao

Fatigue cracks on steel components may have strong consequences on the structure's serviceability and strength. Their detection and localization is a difficult task. Existing technologies enabling structural health monitoring have a complex link signal-to-damage or have economic barriers impeding large-scale deployment. A solution is to develop sensing methods that are inexpensive, scalable, with signals that can directly relate to damage. The authors have recently proposed a smart sensing skin for structural health monitoring applications to mesosystems. The sensor is a thin film soft elastomeric capacitor (SEC) that transduces strain into a measurable change in capacitance. Arranged in a network configuration, …

Inkjet Printing Of Nano-Silver Conductive Ink On Pet Substrate, Skyler Jiang 2017 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Inkjet Printing Of Nano-Silver Conductive Ink On Pet Substrate, Skyler Jiang

Materials Engineering

Printing of conductive ink traditionally uses copper-based ink and was used on high temperature metal substrates due to the high curing and sintering temperature of copper. In this experiment, however, Metalon JS-B25P nano-silver conductive ink was printed using an Epson Stylus C88+ inkjet printer on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) based Novele printing media made for low temperature applications. With silver’s lower sintering temperature, the nano-silver particles in this ink are desired to be able to sinter at a low enough temperature to be used on the PET substrate. The printed ink traces were cured with a temperature-controlled hotplate at 100℃, 120℃, …

Screen Printing Silver Stretchable Conductive Paste To High Density Synthetic Fabric, Allison Rose Tuuri, Wesley Graham Powell 2017 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Screen Printing Silver Stretchable Conductive Paste To High Density Synthetic Fabric, Allison Rose Tuuri, Wesley Graham Powell

Materials Engineering

This project investigated the viability of screen printing stretchable silver conductive paste directly onto fabric and how the resistance changed under cyclic mechanical loading. The paste tested was DuPont™ PE873 stretchable silver conductive paste, which forms a stretchable conductive path by suspending silver flakes in elastomer that can be elastically strained along with the underlying substrate. The silver pastes were printed directly onto two different high-density synthetic fabrics of different weaves. Other samples were prepared by first printing a base layer between the silver paste and the fabric. One base layer was a solvent-based dielectric (DuPont™ ME776) and a stretchable …

Logic Tiles, Andrew Wheeler, Tristan Lennertz 2017 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Logic Tiles, Andrew Wheeler, Tristan Lennertz

Computer Engineering

This project was originally conceived by Professor Andrew Danowitz as he considered the restructuring of the introductory digital design course at Cal Poly. As it stands now, students apply their knowledge of boolean algebra and combinatorial logic through the programming of a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) using a Hardware Descriptive Language (HDL). While this is the industry standard for designing large, complex digital circuits, and is an fundamental skill to learn, there is a lack of actual circuit building in the process that can cause a disconnect from theory to application for students who have little-to-no experience with digital …
