Seven ski resorts in Montana participated in the first economic impact of the alpine ski industry in Montana. Extrapolating the data to all Montana resorts shows that 35 percent of skiers are nonresidents who contribute a combined impact of $83 million dollars to the state. Nonresidents spent $1,252/ski trip/group while in Montana. Residents spent an average of $138/ski trip/group. More nonresidents came from Alberta, Minnesota, Washington and North Dakota than any other state. Residents traveled 75 miles on average to access the ski area.

The economic indicators for the state of Nevada indicate a bleak financial future. The foreclosure rate of the Las Vegas Valley is five times the national average and the highest rate in the country (Hoak, 2010). Sales tax revenues continue spiraling down and fell by 6.6 percent in December 2009 from December 2008 (Garcia, 2010). State politicians face an estimated budget deficit of $3.5 billion. Landscapes surrounding protected areas, while still containing considerable biodiversity, have rapidly growing human populations and associated agricultural development in most of the developing world that tend to isolate them, potentially reducing their conservation value. Using field studies and multi-temporal Landsat imagery, we examine a forest park, Kibale National Park in western Uganda, its changes over time, and related land cover change in the surrounding landscape. We find Kibale has successfully defended its borders and prevents within-park deforestation and other land incursions, and has maintained tree cover throughout the time period of the study.
