Direct Care Workforce: The Shift Towards Nonmedical Services, Christopher Kelly

Purpose:A shift in the direct care workforce from aides trained to provide medical services to those trained only to provide nonmedicalservices impacts both providers and consumers of long-term care. Between 2013 and 2014, data from the U.S. Census Bureau show that the number of nursing, psychiatric, and home health aides (who providemedical services) has declined while the number of personal and home care aides (who provide nonmedical services) has increased. This study explores the potential reasons for these trends by comparing these two groups of aides, using data from the 2013 and 2014 American Community Survey (ACS).

Chapter 1 raises the research question guiding this study. Do relationships that board members of nonprofits have to officials in other agencies affect the likelihood of acquiring grants? The objective of this study was to examine the role that relationship ties played in the nonprofit sector’s ability to receive grants.

Chapter 2 ties the research agenda to existing research. Nonprofit organizational and financial behavior was explained in terms of resource dependence. Since nonprofit organizations face uncertainty in resource allocation, the behavior of the organization and the board members change in reaction to uncertainty. The destructive public conflicts documented in this study caused dysfunction and harm to Massachusetts local governments and communities. The report documents how municipal officials are managing conflicts and the impact of current approaches to dealing with destructive public conflict. The needs that municipal officials identify as important for dealing with future destructive public conflict and strategies to address those needs are also documented.

This study examines public preferences for two revenue options—fuel taxes and tolls—to finance transportation infrastructure in an urban area with the use of the results of a survey of residents of the Hampton Roads region of southeastern Virginia. Specifically, the study addresses two related research questions: (a) To what extent do residents support instituting tolls, increasing the fuel tax, or both? (b) What roles do self-interest and ideological beliefs play in support of increasing the fuel tax, imposing tolls, or doing both? Notes Regarding Nebraska Population Change From The Tuesday December 22, 2015 U.S. Census Bureau Release Of State Population Estimates As Of July 1, 2015, David J. Drozd

The Census Bureau estimates the population of Nebraska as of July 1, 2015 to be 1,896,190, so the state nearly hit the 1.9 million mark (and it does so with rounding). This is an increase of 13,210 from the July 1, 2014 estimate, or an increase of 0.70 percent. Nebraska’s most current annual growth is very similar to gains seen in the past several years – for example, the increase in the prior year from 2013-14 was 13,680 persons or 0.73 percent. Nebraska has now gained population for 28 straight years, with the last annual population loss occurring in 1987, …

On December 5, 2015, the U.S. Census Bureau released five‐year American Community Survey (ACS) estimates for the combined years of 2009 through 2013, making available social, economic, housing and demographic statistics for Nebraska’s counties. Also available are estimates for every community and legislative district in Nebraska and the nation.

The data are based on a rolling national sample survey mailed to about 3 million addresses each year, resulting in nearly 2 million final interviews each year from 2010 through 2014. By pooling several years of survey responses, the ACS can generate detailed statistical portraits of smaller geographies such as counties. …

There are many potential uses of understanding how the population might change into the future.Population projections help us to plan and prepare for likely demographic changes. Using the current population structure and applying birth, death, and net migration rates and how they change for various ages provides a glimpse of the changes and shifts that are likely to occur as well as the timing of such changes.
