Bedouin Women In The Naqab, Israel: Ongoing Transformation, Marcy M. Wells 2010 University of Denver

Bedouin Women In The Naqab, Israel: Ongoing Transformation, Marcy M. Wells

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Since its inception in 1948, the state of Israel has based development plans on an agenda of nation-building that has systematically excluded Palestinian Arab citizens such as the indigenous Bedouin. Policies of relocation, resettlement, and restructuring have been imposed on the Bedouin, forcing them from their ancestral lands and lifestyle in the Naqab (or Negev, as it is called in Hebrew) desert of southern Israel. The rapid and involuntary transition from self-sufficient, semi-nomadic, pastoral life to sedentarization and modernization has resulted in dependency on a state that treats the Bedouin as minority outsiders through unjust social, political, and economic structures. …

Unpacking Preference: How Previous Experience Affects Auto Ownership, Rachel R. Weinberger, Frank Goetzke 2010 University of Louisville

Unpacking Preference: How Previous Experience Affects Auto Ownership, Rachel R. Weinberger, Frank Goetzke

Rachel R Weinberger

As environmental concerns mount alongside increasing auto dependence, research has been devoted to understanding the number of automobiles households own. The 2000 US census public use micro sample is used to demonstrate the importance of preference formation in auto ownership by studying auto ownership among recent movers. Using a multinomial probit model, the paper demonstrates that residents in the US transit cities who moved from major metropolitan areas are more likely to own fewer vehicles than counterparts who moved from smaller metropolitan areas and non-metropolitan areas. It is concluded that these results are due to learned preferences for levels of …

Are Profits From Subdivision Development Higher In Areas With More Regulations? A Case Study Of South Kingstown, Rhode Island And Some Implications For Land Use Planning, Rayman Mohamed 2010 Wayne State University

Are Profits From Subdivision Development Higher In Areas With More Regulations? A Case Study Of South Kingstown, Rhode Island And Some Implications For Land Use Planning, Rayman Mohamed

Rayman Mohamed

Little is known about the relationship between regulations and profits from residential subdivision development. This article presents data that for the first time determines profits from subdivision development in a heavily-regulated market. This study found an average profit, measured by internal rates of return, of 29 percent, comfortably above what scholars consider normal. Profits decreased as time increased to complete the subdivision. Profits also decreased because of delays due to regulations and voluntary delays by developers. These results suggest that implementing smart growth policies may be challenging in more-regulated areas and easier in less-regulated areas. The findings suggest that higher …

Emerging Law Addressing Climate Change And Water, Prof. Elizabeth Burleson

Prof. Elizabeth Burleson

The World Economic Forum recognizes that while restrictions on energy affect water systems and vice versa, energy and water policy are rarely coordinated. The International Panel on Climate Change predicts that wet places will become wetter and dry places will become dryer. Transboundary water, energy and climate coordination can occur through international consensus building.

Human Rights Education In Peace-Building: A Look At Where The Practice Has Come From, And Where It Needs To Head, Tracey Holland 2010 Vassar College

Human Rights Education In Peace-Building: A Look At Where The Practice Has Come From, And Where It Needs To Head, Tracey Holland

Human Rights & Human Welfare

The world’s peace-building and development organizations increasingly are incorporating human-rights frameworks into the myriad of activities now under their purview. Slower to develop, however, are the capacity-building programs designed to impart knowledge about human rights to citizens and communities. Field-workers throughout the world indicate that the lack of such guidance-giving education hinders them when it comes to monitoring activities, helping to rebuild public institutions, setting up and organizing electoral politics, building an unfettered media, protecting human security, setting up transitional justice mechanisms, and the myriad of other peace-building activities and democratization challenges they face in post-conflict situations. This paper not …

Measuring The Success Of Stormwater Credit Programs Through The Implementation Of Credit Utilization Ratios, Conan Brooks 2010 University of Kentucky

Measuring The Success Of Stormwater Credit Programs Through The Implementation Of Credit Utilization Ratios, Conan Brooks

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Credit programs can serve different purposes, including encouraging stormwater customers to pay for and maintain Best Management Practices (BMPs) on their property when doing so will provide a financial advantage. Assuming this reduced cost of the BMP will also lower costs for the utility while improving urban water quality, credit utilization can be used to show that a credit program is a successful at lowering the cost of pollution abatement. Evaluating different credit programs might be possible through the use of ratios, or a combination of ratios, in order to compare a credit program’s utilization to other utilities. Policy makers, …

"Eco-Cities" And "Sustainable Cities" - Whither?, Kheng Lian Koh, Asanga Gunawansa, Lovleen Bhullar

Social Space

The concept of sustainable cities was first discussed by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2003, with the idea of eco-cities entering the picture in 2007. Are the two mutually exclusive, or do they overlap? The authors consider the implications of cities as engines of growth and examine case studies that reveal what lies ahead for sustainable cities and eco-cities.

Far From Gold: Why Hosting The Olympics Is Detrimental To The Host Country, Carlen Don

CMC Senior Theses

Due to the excitement and prestige surrounding the Olympics, international perceptions of hosting the Games are positive and the Olympics are thought to bring prosperity and economic benefits to the host country. However this paper insists that hosting the Olympic Games is actually more detrimental to the host country than beneficial. Though each Games is different and every host country has the opportunity to create a positive Games, the negative aspects of hosting the Games create a difficult environment for any country to host a successful Games. Due to the negative effects of the Olympics on national unity, economic impact …
