Export Vs. Import - Led Growth In Mexico, Joseph Kababie 2010 University of Texas at El Paso

Export Vs. Import - Led Growth In Mexico, Joseph Kababie

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This study concentrates on the role of imports and the impact they have for economic growth in the country of Mexico. The investigation is conducted in a time series framework using an ordinary least square method, a vector autoregressive model, and a vector error correction model to test the trade variables of exports and imports for exogenous or endogenous induced growth. The results indicate through Granger causality tests that imports are having the significant impact for economic growth. These findings are in some ways in contradiction to previous literature that has focused on exports as being the sole engine for …

Inequality Aversion And Efficiency With Ordinal And Cardinal Social Preferences – An Experimental Study, Dorothea K. Herreiner, Clemens Puppe 2010 Loyola Marymount University

Inequality Aversion And Efficiency With Ordinal And Cardinal Social Preferences – An Experimental Study, Dorothea K. Herreiner, Clemens Puppe

Economics Faculty Works

In this paper, we report on a series of free-form bargaining experiments in
which two players have to distribute four indivisible goods among themselves. In one treatment, players are informed about the monetary payoffs associated with each bundle of goods; in a second treatment only the ordinal ranking of the bundles is given. We find that in both cases, inequality aversion plays a prominent role. In the ordinal treatment, individuals apparently use the ranks in the respective preference orderings over bundles of goods as a substitute for the unknown monetary value. Allocations that distribute the value (money or ranks, respectively) …

Globalization And International Development: Critical Issues Of The 21st Century, Sisay Asefa Editor 2010 Western Michigan University

Globalization And International Development: Critical Issues Of The 21st Century, Sisay Asefa Editor

Upjohn Press

These papers address globalization issues with a special emphasis on its impact on poverty. Advances in transportation and telecommunications with instantaneous information and communication flows requires new approaches given the wide differences in cultures, political systems, languages, and ethnicities. Extreme variation in the international distributions of wealth, income, and poverty remain as enormous social problems to be addressed. In general, the contributors recommend expanding the flows between countries to accelerate growth and reduce inequalities. These flows include international trade and capital, migration, remittances, and foreign aid. But in addition to these hard commodities and dollars, there are flows of ideas, …

Default Risk, Zeynep Topaloglu 2010 CUNY Graduate Center

Default Risk, Zeynep Topaloglu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The hazard rate models used in recent bankruptcy literature assume censoring and default are two independent events, which means the censored company will eventually default. However we believe there will be a portion in the censored group that will be long-term survivors and we propose a mixture model of survivors and risky companies. Moreover this dissertation models the event and the timing of default incident at the same time. For the event of default and the timing of default we utilize a logistic regression. The results have justified the advantage of our model over the standard hazard rate models and …

Three Essays On The Determinants Of Foreign Direct Investment (Fdi), Haitao Liang 2010 CUNY Graduate Center

Three Essays On The Determinants Of Foreign Direct Investment (Fdi), Haitao Liang

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

At first, a literature review of over 150 articles on the determination of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) proposes the main determinants of FDI. A meta-analysis tests the reliability of the previous studies on FDI.

Then, a cluster analysis on FDI data reveals the necessary to segment economies, especially by income level, in FDI analysis.

A large number of studies emphasize FDI determinants but ignore the income distribution on the results, which biases the estimates. In Chapter 3, I correct for heterogeneity due to income distribution by using the Blundell-Bond System GMM (Generalized Method of Moments), which controls for endogeneity problem …

Railroads And Economies Of Scale And Scope In U.S. Manufacturing Industries: 1850-1880. Chandler Revisited, Michael Kalson 2010 CUNY Graduate Center

Railroads And Economies Of Scale And Scope In U.S. Manufacturing Industries: 1850-1880. Chandler Revisited, Michael Kalson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study concerns the measurement and quantification of the relationship between railroadization in the United States in the mid-19th century and the subsequent evolution of the modern, large-scale, corporate form of industrial business organization marked by significant economies of scale and scope, as described in various writings by Alfred Chandler. Focusing on American industry as it developed from 1850-1880 using data uniquely suited to empirical analysis of economies of scale and scope, its aim is to determine whether the growth of the American railroad network, as Chandler contended, expanded markets and augmented the American financial sector such that the …

Essays On Economic Policy: Income Inequality And Health Insurance, Eric Doviak 2010 CUNY Graduate Center

Essays On Economic Policy: Income Inequality And Health Insurance, Eric Doviak

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation contains economic analyses of two critical social issues facing the United States at the dawn of the 21st century: income inequality and the affordability of health insurance.

The chapter on income inequality uses the Solow Model of economic growth to model the evolution of inequality over time. In steady state, differences in household saving rates generate differences in household capital income. Households that save more accumulate more capital and have higher steady-state income. Tax policy affects the distribution of income through its influence on household saving rates. Increasing the tax rate on labor income causes a greater percentage …

The Labor Market, Political Capital, And Ownership Sector In Urban China, Xi Pan 2010 University of Kentucky

The Labor Market, Political Capital, And Ownership Sector In Urban China, Xi Pan

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Over the past three decades, economic reforms have brought about dramatic changes in China. The wave of structural and economic reforms regarding the State-owned Sector (SOS), and the surge of the Non-State-owned Sector (NSOS), have influenced returns in the labor market, such as the returns concerning human capital and political capital in urban China. Presumably, the NSOS would be more marketed-oriented compared to the SOS, and it would have different returns concerning political capital, as represented by Chinese Communist Party (CCP) membership. This is likely because the NSOS would not value Party membership as much as the SOS does. The …

Is Economics Coursework, Or Majoring In Economics, Associated With Different Civic Behaviors?, Sam Allgood, William Bosshardt, Wilbert van der Klaauw, Michael Watts 2010 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Is Economics Coursework, Or Majoring In Economics, Associated With Different Civic Behaviors?, Sam Allgood, William Bosshardt, Wilbert Van Der Klaauw, Michael Watts

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

Studies regularly link levels of educational attainment to civic behavior and attitudes, but only a few investigate the role played by specific coursework. Using data collected from students who attended one of four public universities in our study, we investigate the relationship between economics coursework and civic behavior after graduation. Drawing from large samples of students in economics, business, or general majors, we compare responses across the three groups and by the number of undergraduate economics courses completed. We find that undergraduate coursework in economics is strongly associated with political party affiliation and with donations to candidates or parties, but …

Are Brand Name Medicine Prices Really Lower In Ciudad Juárez?, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr., Osvaldo Miranda 2010 University of Texas at El Paso

Are Brand Name Medicine Prices Really Lower In Ciudad Juárez?, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr., Osvaldo Miranda

Border Region Modeling Project

Relatively high brand name pharmaceutical prices have led many United States residents to cross the border into Mexico as “medical tourists.” To examine the savings potentially available to consumers willing to cross into Mexico, data are collected and analyzed for brand name prescription medicines sold in El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Retail pharmacy prices are generally lower on the south side of the border and substantial savings result for some medicines. For some products, however, shelf prices are lower on the north side of the border.

Monetary Policies In A Small Open Economy Model With Labor Mobility And Remittances, Diana Rose DEL ROSARIO 2010 Singapore Management University

Monetary Policies In A Small Open Economy Model With Labor Mobility And Remittances, Diana Rose Del Rosario

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This paper presents a model of a small open economy that allows for international labor mobility, thereby endogenizing migrant transfers or remittances. The resulting model is calibrated to the Philippine economy, of which labor migration and remittance inflows are key forces that drive the economy’s growth. The model’s impulse response functions illustrate that the presence of these features generates a different set of dynamics from the standard small open economy model (without labor mobility). Depending on the source of the shock, labor mobility and remittances can either exacerbate or cushion the impact of the shock on the economy. A temporary …

The Impact Of Monetary Policy Announcements On Stock Market: Evidence From China, Yu ZENG 2010 Singapore Management University

The Impact Of Monetary Policy Announcements On Stock Market: Evidence From China, Yu Zeng

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In this paper we examine how stock returns in China respond to monetary policy announcements made by PBC in a short term around announcement day. We employ a nonparametric event-study method to investigate such reactions. We arrive at the following conclusions. Firstly, there is information leakage of monetary policy changes, which is verified by significant changes in stock returns before monetary policy announcement and quitness of stock market after announcement. Secondly, financially constrained and financially unconstrained firms respond quite similarly to monetary policy shocks, which disobeys credit channel of monetary policy transmission in the short run. Thirdly, reserve ratio changes …

Bayesian Analysis Of Country Risk Premia In Developing Small Open Economies, Seigmund Vincent Roque CONTI 2010 Singapore Management University

Bayesian Analysis Of Country Risk Premia In Developing Small Open Economies, Seigmund Vincent Roque Conti

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This thesis studies a model presented by Neumeyer & Perri (2005), which aims to explain the strong countercyclicality of interest rates and net exports in emerging market economies. The model accomplishes this by decomposing interest rates into an international rate and a country risk component, and by making labor demand sensitive to movements in these rates via a working capital constraint imposed on the representative firm. Moreover, it proposes two approaches to determining the stochastic processes for these interest rates: the independent country risk case and the induced country risk case. The induced country risk model calibrated to Argentine data …

Recession, Unemployment, And Attendance At Major League Baseball Games, Bradley Joseph Shatek 2010 University of Northern Iowa

Recession, Unemployment, And Attendance At Major League Baseball Games, Bradley Joseph Shatek

Honors Program Theses

When a country experiences an economic downturn, as the United States has since late 2007, the negative effects are widespread. Workers are laid off, and households and firms spend less due to decreased income. In most industries, revenues and profits decline during recessions, and professional sports franchises may be no different. In a period of high unemployment, one would expect that consumers first cut back on recreation and entertainment. This study was designed to determine the impact of unemployment on one such entertainment activity, Major League Baseball games.
