Role And Impact Of Energy In The Business Cycle, Bao Tan HUYNH 2015 Singapore Management University

Role And Impact Of Energy In The Business Cycle, Bao Tan Huynh

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Given the fundamental role of energy in the economy, the macroeconomic literature contains a large body of work on the impact of oil/energy on the business cycle, with much of the attention focusing on energy supply shocks, mostly modeled as exogenous oil/energy price increases. And yet, the oil price hikes pre-2008 suggest that other shocks to the energy market may be the source of such instance of price disturbances, so that their effects on the economy are no longer predicted by exogenous energy supply shocks. In such scenario, it is no longer valid to treat energy price disturbances as exogenous …

An Experimental Analysis Of Adaptive Learning In A Multi-Subject Economy, David Martin 2015 Ursinus College

An Experimental Analysis Of Adaptive Learning In A Multi-Subject Economy, David Martin

Business and Economics Honors Papers

The rational expectations hypothesis (REH) has long served as a foundation in macroeconomic laws of motion. However, the assumptions of REH are likely too powerful to be representative of economic actors. This research evaluates adaptive learning, a developing alternative to rational expectations, using a multi-agent macroeconomic prediction “game.” Data was gathered from a group of students, each predicting the outcome of a single economy over time. Each agent was asked to forecast output (GDP) and inflation in each period based on historic levels of output, inflation, and interest rates. These data were then analyzed under various theoretical models of adaptive …

The Economy Of Oaxaca Decomposed, Albert Codina Sala 2015 Georgia Southern University

The Economy Of Oaxaca Decomposed, Albert Codina Sala

Honors College Theses

We analyze the internal economy of Oaxaca State in southern Mexico across regions, districts and municipalities from 1999 to 2009. Using the concept of economic convergence, we find mixed evidence for poorer areas catching up with richer areas during a single decade of economic growth. Indeed, some poorer regions thanks to negative growth have actually diverged away from wealthier areas.

Benefits Of Eu Membership For The Transition Countries: The Case Of Latvia, Marko Martinovic 2015 Macalester College

Benefits Of Eu Membership For The Transition Countries: The Case Of Latvia, Marko Martinovic

Economics Honors Projects

This paper estimates the benefits of EU membership for Latvia, a former communist country and a member of the former USSR. It is widely believed that the EU membership significantly contributes to raising living standards and growth of the economies of new members. Using counterfactual analysis with the official date of accession of 2003 I find that Latvia demonstrates stronger economic growth from the EU membership, but only up to 2009. After the 2009 financial crisis Latvia’s economic growth is severally compromised as a consequence of joining the EU. When 1999 is treated as the treatment year, the year when …

The Pattern Of Macroeconomics And Economic Integration: Evidence On D-8 Economic Cooperation, Lukman Hakim, Mostafa AboElsoud, Jauhari Dahalan 2015 Sebelas Maret University

The Pattern Of Macroeconomics And Economic Integration: Evidence On D-8 Economic Cooperation, Lukman Hakim, Mostafa Aboelsoud, Jauhari Dahalan

Economics

The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is the second largest inter- governmental organization after the United Nations Organization (UNO) with its 57 members. But until now, the OIC has not focused on economic integration as a whole. Several OIC countries members initiate to build the D-8 which consists of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey, and try to develop a more intense economic cooperation. Therefore, this research will explore the possibility of D-8 economic integration as well as to identify the macroeconomics conditions that would support the existence of such economic integration. Several techniques are employed …

Interest Rate Elasticity Of Private Sector Credit In Nigeria, A. Bamidele, K. O. Oji, E. S. Smith, L. S. Jimoh

Economic and Financial Review

This study estimated the interest rate elasticity of private sector credit in Nigeria using the Vector Error Correction mechanism. The variables specified included real private sector credit. real GDP. Prime and maximum lending rates, exchange rate, 9)-day Treasury bill rate, inflation rate and all share index of the Nigerian Stock Exchange. The data utilised covered the period: 1998 Q1 to 2013 Q4. Granger causality tests were performed, and the co-integration analysis of the Johansen system-wide procedure was employed. The results indicated thot private sector credit was fairly interest inelastic in terms of both maximum and prime lending rates. The estimated …

Measuring The Depth Of Liquidity And Efficiency Of The Nigerian Capital Market, M. Tule, P. Ogiji, U. B. Ndako, U. Ujunwa, S. L. Jimoh, C. E. lhediwa, O. O. Afiemo 2015 Central Bank of Nigeria

Measuring The Depth Of Liquidity And Efficiency Of The Nigerian Capital Market, M. Tule, P. Ogiji, U. B. Ndako, U. Ujunwa, S. L. Jimoh, C. E. Lhediwa, O. O. Afiemo

Economic and Financial Review

The study developed a spectrum of indicative measures of capital market liquidity using Nigerian monthly stock market indices for the period January 2000 — June 2014. If identified four broad measures of liquidity common in the literature transaction cost, volume price and market impact measures. Based on these three sub-measures of market efficiency coefficient, variance ratio, turnover ratio and illiquidity index were developed based on data availability and other market factors specific to the Nigerian environment. The study examined the impact of capital market liquidity on asset price returns. using a vector auto regression [VAR] model which showed that the …

Monetary Policy And Asset Prices In Nigeria, M.K. Tule, P. Ogiji, G. Okorie, D. Mbaka 2015 Central Bank of Nigeria

Monetary Policy And Asset Prices In Nigeria, M.K. Tule, P. Ogiji, G. Okorie, D. Mbaka

Economic and Financial Review

This paper attempts to contribute to the debate on the linkages between monetary policy and asset prices in the woke of the recent global financial crisis. The study employs vector error correction (VEC) mode! on Nigerian weekly data from January 2007 to October 2013. A pair-wise granger causality test indicated a unidirectional causality from asset prices to monetary policy. Exchange rate at lag one was negatively related to the All Share Index. suggesting that exchange rate appreciation is likely to lead to excessive appreciation in asset prices. The results further indicated a positive relationship between financial system stability and asset …

Sustainability In The Curriculum And Teaching Of Economics: Transforming Introductory Macroeconomics, Madhavi Venkatesan 2015 Bridgewater State University

Sustainability In The Curriculum And Teaching Of Economics: Transforming Introductory Macroeconomics, Madhavi Venkatesan

Present models of economic growth primarily focus on the role of expenditures as captured in the commonly cited economic indicator, gross domestic product (GDP), where GDP is defined as the sum of final goods and services sold within a country’s natural borders. Noting that a country’s expenditures are referred to as “aggregate expenditures” and that the majority of spending is specific to consumption or consumer spending, especially in the United States where this spending category is nearly two-thirds of annual GDP (other expenditure categories for GDP include investment spending, government spending and foreign spending as proxied by net exports), there …

Cyclical Public Policy And Financial Factors, Vishrut Dhirendra RANA 2015 Singapore Management University

Cyclical Public Policy And Financial Factors, Vishrut Dhirendra Rana

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The Great Recession of 2009 motivated a growing body of research on the quantitative modeling of financial factors and appropriate policy responses. This dissertation is a part of that line of research and looks at the quantitative macroeconomic effects of financial factors on business cycles. The dissertation uses quantitative macroeconomic general equilibrium models (popular dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE)) that allow flexibility in micro-founded modeling of macroeconomic environments. The dissertation captures financial factors through explicit modeling of financial intermediation, featuring costly state verification and collateral constraints as financial frictions. The first chapter offers a new quantitative model of credit cycles …

Housing And The Macroeconomy, Emily Corinne Marshall 2015 University of Kentucky

Housing And The Macroeconomy, Emily Corinne Marshall

Theses and Dissertations--Economics

This dissertation studies the impact of several different housing market features on the macroeconomy.

Chapter 1 augments the New-Keynesian model with collateral constraints to incorporate long-term debt in order to examine the interaction between multi-period loans, leverage, and indeterminacy. Allowing firms to borrow heavily against commercial housing by increasing the loan-to-value ratio from 0.01 to 0.90 reduces the level of steady state output approximately 3.19% and decreases social welfare. In contrast, increasing the debt limit of households increases steady state output by 2.72%. Social welfare is maximized under a utilitiarian function when households can borrow at a loan-to-value ratio of …

Examining The Relationship Between Received Remittances And Education In Malawi, Kasvi Malik 2015 Claremont McKenna College

Examining The Relationship Between Received Remittances And Education In Malawi, Kasvi Malik

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis examines the relationship between received remittances and education using random samples from panel survey data from households in rural Malawi collected between 2008 and 2010. Past research as well as that conducted in this paper point to the fact that remittances and education share an important correlation. The results of this study indicate that on a microeconomic level, remittances have a highly significant and positive impact on household education. Other remittance-related factors such as the distance from agent, the remittance amount, and the type of account held by an individual also have a significant impact on the highest …

The Macroeconomic Effects Of Tax News, Sandeep Kumar Rangaraju 2015 University of Kentucky

The Macroeconomic Effects Of Tax News, Sandeep Kumar Rangaraju

Theses and Dissertations--Economics

This dissertation explores the effect of tax news on national and state-level economic activity.

In the first chapter, I explore the effect of tax news on state economic activity. I estimate a factor-augmented vector autoregression (FAVAR) model, which allows us to consider the possibility that unobserved regional factors --such as credit and fiscal conditions-- might be relevant for modelling the dynamic response of aggregate and state-level economic activity. Tax news is identified as a shock to the implicit tax rate, measured by the yield spread between the one year tax-exempt municipal bond and the one-year taxable Treasury bond. My results …

Health Care Use, Out-Of-Pocket Expenditure, And Macroeconomic Conditions During The Great Recession, Juan Du, Takeshi Yagihashi 2015 Old Dominion University

Health Care Use, Out-Of-Pocket Expenditure, And Macroeconomic Conditions During The Great Recession, Juan Du, Takeshi Yagihashi

Economics Faculty Publications

We study how macroeconomic conditions during the Great Recession affected health care utilization and out-of-pocket expenditures of American households. We use two data sources: the Consumer Expenditure (CE) Survey and the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP); each has its own advantages. The CE contains quarterly frequency variables, and the SIPP provides panel data at the individual level. Consistent evidence across the two datasets shows that utilization of routine medical care was counter-cyclical, whereas hospital care was pro-cyclical during the Great Recession. When we examine the pre-recession period, the relationship between macroeconomic conditions and health care use was either …
