Al-Kīmiyā

This article analyses the translational strategies of the Sufi lexicon by means of a series of comparisons between the Persian text of Rūmī’s Fīhī mā fīhi (d. 1273) and its French translation, Le livre du dedans (1976). The English translation by Arthur John Arberry (1961) and its modern retranslation by Doug Marman (2010) are also put into perspective. To conduct this analysis, the translational approaches of three key terms – Ḥaqq (the Truth), esteghrāq (the state of immersion) and faqr (the state of poverty) – are analysed using a methodology of translation criticism that is inspired by Henri Meschonnic’s Poétique …

This paper reports on a classroom experiment carried out with Master’s students enrolled in a specialised translation course (English-French) at the University of Liège (Belgium). We present the results from the qualitative analysis of a corpus of five source texts in English, their machine translations and their post-edited versions in French. We decided to use DeepL as MT engine. The main objective of our experiment is first and foremost to provide students with the opportunity to gain perspective on the MT advantages and disadvantages, which still exist in spite of many advances made in the field. Finally, this paper also …

Les Mots : Pouvoir, Clarté Et Rayonnement, Nada Kfouri Khoury 2020 Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth

Les Mots : Pouvoir, Clarté Et Rayonnement, Nada Kfouri Khoury

Al-Kīmiyā

Words are at the heart of every reflection on the connection between thoughts and their translation into language and action. If asked about the roles words have, three options could loom in the horizon: the power of words, the simplicity of words, and the journey of words. The power of words sways between grandeur and decadence; the simplicity of words guarantees power and success; and the history of words overpasses several aspects of the unfamiliar journey of words, both diachronic and synchronic. We shall decipher these three aspects through concrete examples related to the different roles of words whether through …

Bilingual And Bicultural Research Teams: Unpacking The Complexities., Maya I I. Ragavan, John Cowden

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Researchers often describe use of "bilingual/bicultural" research teams, especially for research being conducted with marginalized communities. In this perspectives article, we argue that while increasing the diversity of research teams is imperative, using the term "bilingual/bicultural" without further explanation is problematic. We first review the nuances of the terms bilingual and bicultural individually. Next, we describe how the terms bilingual and bicultural cannot be conflated. Finally, we provide recommendations for researchers, journals, and funding agencies.

Becoming A Good Host: A Beginner’S Guide To Learning Deliberative Civic Engagement, Kevin L.D. Leaven 2020 James Madison University

Becoming A Good Host: A Beginner’S Guide To Learning Deliberative Civic Engagement, Kevin L.D. Leaven

VA Engage Journal

This article examines how Deliberative Civic Engagement (DCE) is used as a public engagement process to invite disjointed cultural communities into a shared space to engage in democratically inspired dialogue. Dialogue is sought in DCE events because it encourages reflexivity and allows for collaborative ideation processes. Collaboration among differing groups demands that DCE events are open enough to be influenced by the immediate concerns of the participants involved. In addition, openness and vulnerability are required to support deep level thinking and connection between heterogeneous identities represented.

Kevin L.D. Leaven is a recent graduate of the James Madison University’s graduate program …

“I’M Real I Thought I Told Ya”: Developing Critical Media Literacy Through U.S. Latinx Digital Media Representations, Solange T. Castellar 2020 CUNY Graduate Center

“I’M Real I Thought I Told Ya”: Developing Critical Media Literacy Through U.S. Latinx Digital Media Representations, Solange T. Castellar

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis explores how audiences engage with U.S. Latinx media representations through the practice of critical media literacy. I interrogate how media consumers construct critical media literacy through interacting with U.S. Latinx figures on digital media platforms, particularly on the social-media app, Twitter, and the user-generated video content platform, YouTube. Throughout this thesis, I argue that users on these platforms who engage with U.S. Latinx pop culture figures, like Jennifer Lopez and Belcalis Almanzar (Cardi B), read, digest, and comprehend a variety of multimedia images, texts, or videos, and that this engagement becomes an accessible form of critical media literacy, …

Communication Competence Training Within Minority-Owned Small Businesses, Shirleena Racine Baggett 2020 California State University – San Bernardino

Communication Competence Training Within Minority-Owned Small Businesses, Shirleena Racine Baggett

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Business ownership is imperative in correcting economic issues for demographic groups subjugated to discrimination, inequality, poverty, and other harmful disadvantages. This project supports the idea that building communication competence within minority-owned small businesses and nonprofit organizations, will significantly increase achievement of long-term sustainability and success. The solution is not only creating communication training tailored for minority entrepreneurs, but to allow access in feasible and tangible ways. This study begins by defining communication and explaining its function to assist in moving past the narrative of communication interaction as “talking and listening,” but instead a concept rooted in logic, theoretical analysis, and …

A Needs Analysis Of Oral Communicative Skills In Mandarin By Malaysian Hotel Attendants, Chih Khuan Wong 2020 Universiti Malaya

A Needs Analysis Of Oral Communicative Skills In Mandarin By Malaysian Hotel Attendants, Chih Khuan Wong

Student Works (2020-2029)

Tourism is an important industry in Malaysia, contributing to one-sixth of the national gross domestic product for the past 10 years. Tourists from China made up the third largest group among the foreign visitors in Malaysia. Almost 25% of their expenditure is spent on accommodation, thus the management of many Malaysian hotels are promoting training on communicative Mandarin that focuses on hospitality language to their frontliners, i.e. the service attendants. Therefore, there is a need to identify the challenges faced by hotel service attendants when serving Chinese-speaking guests. The objectives of this research is (1) to identify the Mandarin communication …

Kinesthetic Language: A Dialect Of Kinesics, Terrill Suzanne Corletto 2020 California State University - San Bernardino

Kinesthetic Language: A Dialect Of Kinesics, Terrill Suzanne Corletto

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Human communication requires the disciplines regarding physical fitness, codified language, and the performing arts to overlap, and exist symbiotically. Within the realm of artistic performance, the three disciplines working together deliver a deliberate message in a way unique to performing artists. The general tendency to compartmentalize sports, communication, and the performing arts into their pigeonhole categories of Kinesiology, Linguistics, and Theatre Arts is impractical, particularly for performing artists simply because all of the disciplines are mutually dependent in the context of all kinesthetic communications.

The purpose of this paper is to define and discuss several concepts and the ways in …

Third Culture Building And Interaction During Study Abroad, Marissa Lewis 2020 Bowling Green State University

Third Culture Building And Interaction During Study Abroad, Marissa Lewis

Master of Arts in Media and Communication Plan II Graduate Projects

This report examines a common problem among students who study abroad, namely, that they remain with like-nationals during their stay. Some university students refrain from interacting with students from other cultures. This phenomenon is explained by the “stress” phase in Cultural Adaptation Theory. This project commits to providing a solution to interaction barriers by introducing the Third Culture Theory. A framework for third culture building is advanced that allows students to gain more out of the study abroad experience.

Finding My Feet: An Autoethnographic Study Of A Kosovar Student, Erjona Gashi 2020 James Madison University

Finding My Feet: An Autoethnographic Study Of A Kosovar Student, Erjona Gashi

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Utilizing creative analytic practices of poetic vignettes and personal narratives (Richardson, 1999), throughout this autoethnographic thesis project I illustrate how I talk about my lived experiences, as a refugee, a child of war in Kosovo, and as a Kosovar international student in the U.S. I was forcibly displaced in 1999 when the Serbian government began a campaign of ethnic cleansing and oppression in Kosovo with the goal of erasing our culture, history, and language. Twenty years later, I still sense a reluctance of those in my family and culture, including myself, to give voice to the most difficult times in …

Taking Terrorists At Their Word: Testing The Co-Religionist Hypothesis In Islamic State Propaganda, Joel Elliott 2020 Kennesaw State University

Taking Terrorists At Their Word: Testing The Co-Religionist Hypothesis In Islamic State Propaganda, Joel Elliott

Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations

This dissertation operates on the idea that, as conflict researchers, we can look to Islamic State’s (referred to from here on as ‘Daesh’) own recruitment propaganda to identify the best people to counter Daesh’s violent rhetoric. This project analyzes Daesh’s main print publication, Dabiq, to catalogue and classify the types of people and institutions Daesh targets most, and which types of arguments Daesh uses to attack those targets. It uses this information to test the Co-Religionist Hypothesis, which predicts that the most effective peaceful interveners in a religious conflict will be of the same religion as the belligerents. Conventional …

Allyship As An Act: The Performative, Power-Laden, And Contradictory Co-Cultural Strategies Of Straight Allies, David Dooling 2020 Missouri State University

Allyship As An Act: The Performative, Power-Laden, And Contradictory Co-Cultural Strategies Of Straight Allies, David Dooling

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

While the study of queer communities underscores the importance of responses to heteronormativity, this dual-method study challenges positionality by examining the co-cultural strategies of straight allies in predominantly queer conversations and spaces. Using Orbe’s Co-Cultural Theory as a lens, this study examines the co-cultural strategies and factors that influence straight allies’ communication when entrenched in queer ontology and dialogue (Study 1). Additionally, co-cultural strategies are measured among straight allies in hypothetical workplaces that are either predominantly queer or predominantly straight (Study 2) using Lapinski and Orbe’s (2007) Co-Cultural Theory Scales. Together, the results of these studies contribute to the ideas …
