Modeling Neurovascular Coupling From Clustered Parameter Sets For Multimodal Eeg-Nirs, M. Tanveer Talukdar, H. Robert Frost, Solomon G. G. Diamond 2015 Dartmouth College

Modeling Neurovascular Coupling From Clustered Parameter Sets For Multimodal Eeg-Nirs, M. Tanveer Talukdar, H. Robert Frost, Solomon G. G. Diamond

Dartmouth Scholarship

Despite significant improvements in neuroimaging technologies and analysis methods, the fundamental relationship between local changes in cerebral hemodynamics and the underlying neural activity remains largely unknown. In this study, a data driven approach is proposed for modeling this neurovascular coupling relationship from simultaneously acquired electroencephalographic (EEG) and near-infrared spectroscopic (NIRS) data. The approach uses gamma transfer functions to map EEG spectral envelopes that reflect time-varying power variations in neural rhythms to hemodynamics measured with NIRS during median nerve stimulation. The approach is evaluated first with simulated EEG-NIRS data and then by applying the method to experimental EEG-NIRS data measured from …

Best Practice Recommendations For Data Screening, Justin A. DeSimone, Peter D. Harms, Alice J. DeSimone 2015 University of Nebraska—Lincoln,

Best Practice Recommendations For Data Screening, Justin A. Desimone, Peter D. Harms, Alice J. Desimone

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Survey respondents differ in their levels of attention and effort when responding to items. There are a number of methods researchers may use to identify respondents who fail to exert sufficient effort in order to increase the rigor of analysis and enhance the trustworthiness of study results. Screening techniques are organized into three general categories, which differ in impact on survey design and potential respondent awareness. Assumptions and considerations regarding appropriate use of screening techniques are discussed along with descriptions of each technique. The utility of each screening technique is a function of survey design and administration. Each technique has …

Variation In Rheumatoid Hand And Wrist Surgery Among Medicare Beneficiaries: A Population-Based Cohort Study, Lin Zhong, Kevin C. Chung, Onur Baser, David A. Fox, Huseyin Yuce, Jennifer F. Waljee

Publications and Research

Objective. To examine the rate and variation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA)-related hand and wrist surgery among Medicare (elderly) beneficiaries in the United States, and to identify the patient and provider factors that influence surgical rates.

Methods. Using the 2006–2010 100% Medicare claims data of beneficiaries with RA diagnosis, we examined rates of rheumatoid hand and wrist arthroplasty, arthrodesis, and hand tendon reconstruction in the United States. We used multivariate logistic regression models to examine variation in receipt of surgery by patient and regional characteristics (density of providers, intensity of use of biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs).

Results. Between 2006 and 2010, …

Proof-Of-Concept Of Environmental Dna Tools For Atlantic Sturgeon Management, Jameson Hinkle 2015 Virginia Commonwealth University

Proof-Of-Concept Of Environmental Dna Tools For Atlantic Sturgeon Management, Jameson Hinkle

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

The Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus, Mitchell) is an anadromous species that spawns in tidal freshwater rivers from Canada to Florida. Overfishing, river sedimentation and alteration of the river bottom have decreased Atlantic Sturgeon populations, and NOAA lists the species as endangered. Ecologists sometimes find it difficult to locate individuals of a species that is rare, endangered or invasive. The need for methods less invasive that can create more resolution of cryptic species presence is necessary. Environmental DNA (eDNA) is a non-invasive means of detecting rare, endangered, or invasive species by isolating nuclear or mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from the …

Modeling Contagion In The Eurozone Crisis Via Dynamical Systems, Giuseppe Castellacci, Youngna Choi 2015 New York University

Modeling Contagion In The Eurozone Crisis Via Dynamical Systems, Giuseppe Castellacci, Youngna Choi

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We recently (Castellacci and Choi, 2013) formulated a theoretical framework for the modeling of financial instability contagion using the theories of dynamical systems. Here, our main goal is to model the Eurozone financial crisis within that framework. The underlying system comprises many economic agents that belong to several subsystems. In each instantiation of this framework, the hierarchy and nesting of the subsystems is dictated by the nature of the problem at hand. We describe in great detail how a suitable model can be set up for the Eurozone crisis. The dynamical system is defined by the evolution of the wealths …

The Coupled Within- And Between-Host Dynamics In The Evolution Of Hiv/Aids In China, Jie Lou, Hongna Zhou, Dong Liang, Zhen Jin, Baojun Song 2015 Shanghai University

The Coupled Within- And Between-Host Dynamics In The Evolution Of Hiv/Aids In China, Jie Lou, Hongna Zhou, Dong Liang, Zhen Jin, Baojun Song

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In this work, we develop and analyze mathematical models for the coupled within-host and between-host dynamics caricaturing the evolution of HIV/AIDS. The host population is divided into susceptible, the infected without receiving treatment and the infected receiving ART treatment in accordance with China’s Four-Free-One-Care Policy. The within-host model is a typical ODE model adopted from literatures. The between-host model incorporates age-since-infection described by a system of integrodifferential equations. The two models are coupled via the viral load and number of CD4+ T cells of within the hosts. For the between-host model with an arbitrarily selected HIV infected individual, we focus …

Equate: Observed-Score Linking And Equating In R, Anthony D. Albano 2015 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Equate: Observed-Score Linking And Equating In R, Anthony D. Albano

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Linking and equating are statistical procedures used to convert scores from one measurement scale to another. These procedures are most often used in testing programs that involve multiple test forms, where adjustments are made for form difficulty differences when creating a measurement scale that is common across forms. Linking and equating methods are traditionally distinguished by the type of scores they are applied to, whether observed scores or scores from an item response theory model. Methods are also distinguished by the study design under which measurements are taken. The R package equate (Albano, 2014) is free, open-source software for conducting …

Multi-State Models For Interval Censored Data With Competing Risk, Shaoceng Wei 2015 University of Kentucky

Multi-State Models For Interval Censored Data With Competing Risk, Shaoceng Wei

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Multi-state models are often used to evaluate the effect of death as a competing event to the development of dementia in a longitudinal study of the cognitive status of elderly subjects. In this dissertation, both multi-state Markov model and semi-Markov model are used to characterize the flow of subjects from intact cognition to dementia with mild cognitive impairment and global impairment as intervening transient, cognitive states and death as a competing risk.

Firstly, a multi-state Markov model with three transient states: intact cognition, mild cognitive impairment (M.C.I.) and global impairment (G.I.) and one absorbing state: dementia is used to model …

New Results In Ell_1 Penalized Regression, Edward A. Roualdes 2015 University of Kentucky

New Results In Ell_1 Penalized Regression, Edward A. Roualdes

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Here we consider penalized regression methods, and extend on the results surrounding the l1 norm penalty. We address a more recent development that generalizes previous methods by penalizing a linear transformation of the coefficients of interest instead of penalizing just the coefficients themselves. We introduce an approximate algorithm to fit this generalization and a fully Bayesian hierarchical model that is a direct analogue of the frequentist version. A number of benefits are derived from the Bayesian persepective; most notably choice of the tuning parameter and natural means to estimate the variation of estimates – a notoriously difficult task for the …

Developments In Nonparametric Regression Methods With Application To Raman Spectroscopy Analysis, Jing Guo 2015 University of Kentucky

Developments In Nonparametric Regression Methods With Application To Raman Spectroscopy Analysis, Jing Guo

Theses and Dissertations--Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Raman spectroscopy has been successfully employed in the classification of breast pathologies involving basis spectra for chemical constituents of breast tissue and resulted in high sensitivity (94%) and specificity (96%) (Haka et al, 2005). Motivated by recent developments in nonparametric regression, in this work, we adapt stacking, boosting, and dynamic ensemble learning into a nonparametric regression framework with application to Raman spectroscopy analysis for breast cancer diagnosis. In Chapter 2, we apply compound estimation (Charnigo and Srinivasan, 2011) in Raman spectra analysis to classify normal, benign, and malignant breast tissue. We explore both the spectra profiles and their derivatives to …

Unavoidable Minors Of Large 4-Connected Bicircular Matroids, Deborah Chun, Tyler Moss, Dan Slilaty, Xiangqian Zhou 2015 Wright State University - Main Campus

Unavoidable Minors Of Large 4-Connected Bicircular Matroids, Deborah Chun, Tyler Moss, Dan Slilaty, Xiangqian Zhou

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

It is known that any 3-connected matroid that is large enough is certain to contain a minor of a given size belonging to one of a few special classes of matroids. This paper proves a similar unavoidable minor result for large 4-connected bicircular matroids. The main result follows from establishing the list of unavoidable minors of large 4-biconnected graphs, which are the graphs representing the 4-connected bicircular matroids. This paper also gives similar results for internally 4-connected and vertically 4-connected bicircular matroids.

Statistics In The Billera-Holmes-Vogtmann Treespace, Grady S. Weyenberg 2015 University of Kentucky

Statistics In The Billera-Holmes-Vogtmann Treespace, Grady S. Weyenberg

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

This dissertation is an effort to adapt two classical non-parametric statistical techniques, kernel density estimation (KDE) and principal components analysis (PCA), to the Billera-Holmes-Vogtmann (BHV) metric space for phylogenetic trees. This adaption gives a more general framework for developing and testing various hypotheses about apparent differences or similarities between sets of phylogenetic trees than currently exists.

For example, while the majority of gene histories found in a clade of organisms are expected to be generated by a common evolutionary process, numerous other coexisting processes (e.g. horizontal gene transfers, gene duplication and subsequent neofunctionalization) will cause some genes to exhibit a …

Ranking Interesting Changes In Correlation Coefficient Matrix Results From Varying Data Partitions In Causal Graphic Modeling, Yesica Daniela Bravo Gonzalez 2015 Andrews University

Ranking Interesting Changes In Correlation Coefficient Matrix Results From Varying Data Partitions In Causal Graphic Modeling, Yesica Daniela Bravo Gonzalez

Master's Theses

Problem

In life we need to compare situations in order to select the best solution. The study in this paper is about analyzing data (variables), which is also called data mining. There are situations where it is not enough to compare variables among themselves at one specific moment. Sometimes it is necessary to compare the behavior of variables at different periods of time and know how they behave at different times in order to select the best arrangements for any situation.

Method

To find correlation among variables, traffic intersections were simulated so they could be compared, since the correlation coefficient …

Applications Of Monte Carlo Methods In Statistical Inference Using Regression Analysis, Ji Young Huh 2015 Claremont McKenna College

Applications Of Monte Carlo Methods In Statistical Inference Using Regression Analysis, Ji Young Huh

CMC Senior Theses

This paper studies the use of Monte Carlo simulation techniques in the field of econometrics, specifically statistical inference. First, I examine several estimators by deriving properties explicitly and generate their distributions through simulations. Here, simulations are used to illustrate and support the analytical results. Then, I look at test statistics where derivations are costly because of the sensitivity of their critical values to the data generating processes. Simulations here establish significance and necessity for drawing statistical inference. Overall, the paper examines when and how simulations are needed in studying econometric theories.

The Sensitivity Of A Test Based On Spearman's Rho In Cross-Correlation Change Point Problems, Congjian Liu 2015 Georgia Southern University

The Sensitivity Of A Test Based On Spearman's Rho In Cross-Correlation Change Point Problems, Congjian Liu

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In change point problems, there are three main questions that researchers are interested in. First of all, is there a change point or not? Second, when does the change point occur in a time series? Third, how quickly can we detect the change point? In this thesis, we first explain what a change point is, and what a cross-correlation is. We then discuss prior research in this area. Then we discuss and examine a test based on Spearman's rho, introduced by Wied and Dehling (2011), which tests the null hypothesis of no change point, and compare the change point we …

Bayesian Inference Of The Weibull-Pareto Distribution, James Dow 2015 Georgia Southern University

Bayesian Inference Of The Weibull-Pareto Distribution, James Dow

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The Weibull distribution has many applications in various topics. Some of these topics include survival analysis, reliability engineering, general insurance, electrical engineering, and industrial engineering. The Weibull distribution was further extended by the Weibull-Pareto distribution. A desirable property this distribution has is its shape can skew being able to better model left or right skewed data. Examples of skewed data include human longevity and actuarial data. In this work a hierarchical Bayesian model was developed using the Weibull-Pareto distribution.

Meta-Analysis Of Gene Expression Studies, Umaporn Siangphoe 2015 Virginia Commonwealth University

Meta-Analysis Of Gene Expression Studies, Umaporn Siangphoe

Theses and Dissertations

Combining effect sizes from individual studies using random-effects models are commonly applied in high-dimensional gene expression data. However, unknown study heterogeneity can arise from inconsistency of sample qualities and experimental conditions. High heterogeneity of effect sizes can reduce statistical power of the models. We proposed two new methods for random effects estimation and measurements for model variation and strength of the study heterogeneity. We then developed a statistical technique to test for significance of random effects and identify heterogeneous genes. We also proposed another meta-analytic approach that incorporates informative weights in the random effects meta-analysis models. We compared the proposed …

Compositions, Logratios And Geostatistics: An Application To Iron Ore, Clint Ward 2015 Edith Cowan University

Compositions, Logratios And Geostatistics: An Application To Iron Ore, Clint Ward

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Common implementations of geostatistical methods, kriging and simulation, ignore the fact that geochemical data are usually reported in weight percent, sum to a constant, and are thus compositional in nature. The constant sum implies that rescaling has occurred and this can be shown to produce spurious correlations. Compositional geostatistics is an approach developed to ensure that the constant sum constraint is respected in estimation while removing dependencies on the spurious correlations. This study tests the applicability of this method against the commonly implemented ordinary cokriging method. The sample data are production blast cuttings analyses drawn from a producing iron ore …

Taming The Hurricane Of Acquisition Cost Growth – Or At Least Predicting It, Allen J. DeNeve, Erin T. Ryan, Jonathan D. Ritschel, Christine M. Schubert Kabban 2015 Air Force Institute of Technology

Taming The Hurricane Of Acquisition Cost Growth – Or At Least Predicting It, Allen J. Deneve, Erin T. Ryan, Jonathan D. Ritschel, Christine M. Schubert Kabban

Faculty Publications

Cost growth is a persistent adversary to efficient budgeting in the Department of Defense. Despite myriad studies to uncover causes of this cost growth, few of the proposed remedies have made a meaningful impact. A key reason may be that DoD cost estimates are formulated using the highly unrealistic assumption that a program’s current baseline characteristics will not change in the future. Using a weather forecasting analogy, the authors demonstrate how a statistical approach may be used to account for these inevitable baseline changes and identify related cost growth trends. These trends are then used to reduce the error in …
