On Contemplation In Mathematics, Frank Lucas Wolcott 2013 University of Western Ontario

On Contemplation In Mathematics, Frank Lucas Wolcott

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

In a section about research, we make the case that intentional, structured reflection on the mathematical research process, by mathematical researchers themselves, would result in better mathematicians doing better mathematics. As supporting evidence, we describe the Flavors and Seasons project. In a section about teaching, we describe the contemplative education movement and share personal experiences using meditation in the math classroom. We conclude with an explicit proposal for elucidating the experiential context of mathematics, in both research and teaching environments.

The Complexity Of Linear Algebra, LeAnn Kay Christensen 2013 California State University, San Bernardino

The Complexity Of Linear Algebra, Leann Kay Christensen

Theses Digitization Project

This study examines the complexity of linear algebra. Complexity means how much work, or the number of calculations or time it takes to perform a task. As linear algebra is used more and more in different fields, it becomes useful to study ways of reducing the amount of work required to complete basic procedures.

Relation Lifting, With An Application To The Many-Valued Cover Modality, Marta Bílková, Alexander Kurz, Daniela Petrişan, Jirí Velebil 2013 Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic

Relation Lifting, With An Application To The Many-Valued Cover Modality, Marta Bílková, Alexander Kurz, Daniela Petrişan, Jirí Velebil

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We introduce basic notions and results about relation liftings on categories enriched in a commutative quantale. We derive two necessary and sufficient conditions for a 2-functor T to admit a functorial relation lifting: one is the existence of a distributive law of T over the “powerset monad” on categories, one is the preservation by T of “exactness” of certain squares. Both characterisations are generalisations of the “classical” results known for set functors: the first characterisation generalises the existence of a distributive law over the genuine powerset monad, the second generalises preservation of weak pullbacks.

The results presented in this paper …

Nominal Coalgebraic Data Types With Applications To Lambda Calculus, Alexander Kurz, Daniela Petrişan, Paula Severi, Fer-Jan de Vries 2013 Chapman University

Nominal Coalgebraic Data Types With Applications To Lambda Calculus, Alexander Kurz, Daniela Petrişan, Paula Severi, Fer-Jan De Vries

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We investigate final coalgebras in nominal sets. This allows us to define types of infinite data with binding for which all constructions automatically respect alpha equivalence. We give applications to the infinitary lambda calculus.

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 13422 “Nominal Computation Theory”. The underlying theme of the seminar was nominal sets (also known as sets with atoms or Fraenkel-Mostowski sets) and they role and applications in three distinct research areas: automata over infinite alphabets, program semantics using nominal sets and nominal calculi of concurrent processes.

Polynomial Knot And Link Invariants From The Virtual Biquandle, Alissa S. Crans, Allison Henrich, Sam Nelson 2013 Loyola Marymount University

Polynomial Knot And Link Invariants From The Virtual Biquandle, Alissa S. Crans, Allison Henrich, Sam Nelson

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

The Alexander biquandle of a virtual knot or link is a module over a 2-variable Laurent polynomial ring which is an invariant of virtual knots and links. The elementary ideals of this module are then invariants of virtual isotopy which determine both the generalized Alexander polynomial (also known as the Sawollek polynomial) for virtual knots and the classical Alexander polynomial for classical knots. For a fixed monomial ordering <, the Gr\"obner bases for these ideals are computable, comparable invariants which fully determine the elementary ideals and which generalize and unify the classical and generalized Alexander polynomials. We provide examples to illustrate the usefulness of these invariants and propose questions for future work.

Endomorphisms Of Abelian Groups With Small Algebraic Entropy, D. Dikranjan, Ketao Gong, P. Zanardo 2013 Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Udine,Viadelle Scienze,206,Loc.Rizzi,33100 Udine, Italy

Endomorphisms Of Abelian Groups With Small Algebraic Entropy, D. Dikranjan, Ketao Gong, P. Zanardo

Articles

We study the endomorphisms ϕ of abelian groups G having a “small” algebraic entropy h (where “small” usually means ). Using essentially elementary tools from linear algebra, we show that this study can be carried out in the group , where an automorphism ϕ with must have all eigenvalues in the open circle of radius 2, centered at 0 and ϕ must leave invariant a lattice in , i.e., be essentially an automorphism of . In particular, all eigenvalues of an automorphism ϕ with must be roots of unity. This is a particular case of a more general fact known …

Set Theoretic Approach To Algebraic Structures In Mathematics - A Revelation, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy 2013 University of New Mexico

Set Theoretic Approach To Algebraic Structures In Mathematics - A Revelation, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book authors bring out how sets in algebraic structure can be used to construct most generalized algebraic structures, like set linear algebra/vector space, set ideals in rings and semigroups. This sort of study is not only innovative but infact very helpful in cases instead of working with a large data we can work with a considerably small data. Thus instead of working with a vector space or a linear algebra V over a field F we can work with a subset in V and a needed subset in F, this can save both time and economy. The concept …

Convex Cones Of Generalized Positive Rational Functions And Nevanlinna-Pick Interpolation, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz 2013 Chapman University

Convex Cones Of Generalized Positive Rational Functions And Nevanlinna-Pick Interpolation, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Scalar rational functions with a non-negative real part on the right half plane, called positive, are classical in the study of electrical networks, dissipative systems, Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation and other areas. We here study generalized positive functions, i.e with a non-negative real part on the imaginary axis. These functions form a Convex Invertible Cone, cic in short, and we explore two partitionings of this set: (i) into (infinitely many non-invertible) convex cones of functions with prescribed poles and zeroes in the right half plane and (ii) each generalized positive function can be written as a sum of even and odd parts. …

The Gordon Game, Anthony Frenk 2013 Eastern Washington University

The Gordon Game, Anthony Frenk

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

In 1992, about 30 years after Gordon introduced group sequencings to construct row-complete Latin squares, John Isbell introduced the idea of competitive sequencing, the Gordon Game. Isbell investigated the Gordon Game and found solutions for groups of small order. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the Gordon Game and develop a brute force method of determining solutions to the game for all groups of order 12 (up to isomorphism) as well as for abelian groups of order less than 20. The method used will be a depth first search program written in MATLAB. Consequently, group representation using matrices …

Oddification Of The Cohomology Of Type A Springer Varieties, Heather M. Russell, Aaron D. Lauda 2013 University of Richmond

Oddification Of The Cohomology Of Type A Springer Varieties, Heather M. Russell, Aaron D. Lauda

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We identify the ring of odd symmetric functions introduced by Ellis and Khovanov as the space of skew polynomials fixed by a natural action of the Hecke algebra at q = −1. This allows us to define graded modules over the Hecke algebra at q = −1 that are ‘odd’ analogs of the cohomology of type A Springer varieties. The graded module associated to the full flag variety corresponds to the quotient of the skew polynomial ring by the left ideal of nonconstant odd symmetric functions. The top degree component of the odd cohomology of Springer varieties is identifiedwith the …

An Explicit Bijection Between Semistandard Tableaux And Non-Elliptic Sl3 Webs, Heather M. Russell 2013 University of Richmond

An Explicit Bijection Between Semistandard Tableaux And Non-Elliptic Sl3 Webs, Heather M. Russell

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

The sl3 spider is a diagrammatic category used to study the representation theory of the quantum group Uq(sl3). The morphisms in this category are generated by a basis of non-elliptic webs. Khovanov- Kuperberg observed that non-elliptic webs are indexed by semistandard Young tableaux. They establish this bijection via a recursive growth algorithm. Recently, Tymoczko gave a simple version of this bijection in the case that the tableaux are standard and used it to study rotation and joins of webs. We build on Tymoczko’s bijection to give a simple and explicit algorithm for constructing all …

An Extremal Problem For Characteristic Functions, William T. Ross, Isabelle Chalendar, Stephan Ramon Garcia, Dan Timotin 2013 University of Richmond

An Extremal Problem For Characteristic Functions, William T. Ross, Isabelle Chalendar, Stephan Ramon Garcia, Dan Timotin

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Suppose E is a subset of the unit circle T and HC L is the Hardy subalgebra. We examine the problem of Finding the distance from the characteristic function of E to zn H. This admits an alternate description as a dual extremal problem. Precise solutions are given in several important cases. The techniques used involve the theory of Toeplitz and Hankel operators as well as the construction of certain conformal mappings.

Special Type Of Subset Topological Spaces, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy 2013 University of New Mexico

Special Type Of Subset Topological Spaces, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book we construct special subset topological spaces using subsets from semigroups or groups or rings or semirings. Such study is carried out for the first time and it is both interesting and innovative. Suppose P is a semigroup and S is the collection of all subsets of P together with the empty set, then S can be given three types of topologies and all the three related topological spaces are distinct and results in more types of topological spaces. When the semigroup is finite, S gives more types of finite topological spaces. The same is true in case …

Subset Non Associative Topological Spaces, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy 2013 University of New Mexico

Subset Non Associative Topological Spaces, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The concept of non associative topological space is new and innovative. In general topological spaces are defined as union and intersection of subsets of a set X. In this book authors for the first time define non associative topological spaces using subsets of groupoids or subsets of loops or subsets of groupoid rings or subsets of loop rings. This study leads to several interesting results in this direction.

Over hundred problems on non associative topological spaces using of subsets of loops or groupoids is suggested at the end of chapter two. Also conditions for these non associative subset topological spaces …

Subset Groupoids, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy 2013 University of New Mexico

Subset Groupoids, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book authors introduce the new notion of constructing non associative algebraic structures using subsets of a groupoid. Thus subset groupoids are constructed using groupoids or loops. Even if we use subsets of loops still the algebraic structure we get with it is only a groupoid. However we can get a proper subset of it to be a subset loop which will be isomorphic with the loop which was used in the construction of the subset groupoid. To the best of the authors’ knowledge this is the first time non associative algebraic structures are constructed using subsets. We get …
