Thermodynamic Model For Energy-Constrained Open-System Evolution Of Crustal Magma Bodies Undergoing Simultaneous Recharge, Assimilation And Crystallization: The Magma Chamber Simulator, Wendy A. Bohrson, Frank J. Spera, Mark S. Ghiorso, Guy Brown, Jeffrey Creamer, Aaron Mayfield

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

The Magma Chamber Simulator quantifies the impact of simultaneous recharge, assimilation and crystallization through mass and enthalpy balance in a multicomponent–multiphase (melt + solids ± fluid) composite system. As a rigorous thermodynamic model, the Magma Chamber Simulator computes phase equilibria and geochemical evolution self-consistently in resident magma, recharge magma and wallrock, all of which are connected by specified thermodynamic boundaries, to model an evolving open-system magma body. In a simulation, magma cools from its liquidus temperature, and crystals ± fluid are incrementally fractionated to a separate cumulate reservoir. Enthalpy from cooling, crystallization, and possible magma recharge heats wallrock from its …

GPS data reveal that the Brahmaputra Valley has broken from the Indian Plate and rotates clockwise relative to India about a point a few hundred kilometers west of the Shillong Plateau. The GPS velocity vectors define two distinct blocks separated by the Kopili fault upon which 2–3 mm/yr of dextral slip is observed: the Shillong block between longitudes 89 and 93°E rotating clockwise at 1.15°/Myr and the Assam block from 93.5°E to 97°E rotating at ≈1.13°/Myr. These two blocks are more than 120 km wide in a north‐south sense, but they extend locally a similar distance beneath the Himalaya and …

Field-Obtained Soil Water Characteristic Curves And Hydraulic Conductivity Functions, Elvis Ishimwe 2014 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Field-Obtained Soil Water Characteristic Curves And Hydraulic Conductivity Functions, Elvis Ishimwe

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A compacted clay liner (test pad) was constructed and instrumented with volumetric water content and soil matric potential sensors to determine soil water characteristic curves (SWCC) and hydraulic conductivity (k) functions. Specifically, the compacted clay liner was subjected to an infiltration cycle during a sealed double ring infiltrometer (SDRI) test followed by a drying cycle. After the drying cycle, Shelby tube samples were collected from the compacted clay liner and flexible wall permeability (FWP) tests were conducted on sub-samples to determine the saturated hydraulic conductivity. Moreover, two computer programs (RETC and UNSAT-H) were utilized to model the SWCCs and k-functions …

Colucci, Emanuele Forte, Barbara Stenni, Marco Basso Bondini, Mauro Colle Fontana, Costanza Del Gobbo, Daniele Fontana, Doriana Belligoi, Valter Maggi, Marco Filipazzi

The International Workshop on Ice Caves

On days 30 September and 1-2 October 2013, a 7.8 m long ice core has been extracted from a permanent ice cave deposit in the Southeastern Alps (Vasto’s cave, Mt.Canin - Julian Alps). Each 20 to 100 cm long section of the ice core have been immediately stored in plastic bags and preserved thanks to dry ice. The ice samples, thanks to the helicopter, has been subsequently brought on valley and promptly stored in a refrigerated van, made available by BoFrost. Thus the ice cores has been transported intact to the EUROCOLD laboratory in Milan. These operations have been carried …

Characterization Of Two Permanent Ice Cave Deposits In The Southeastern Alps (Italy) By Means Of Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr), Renato R. Colucci, Daniele Fontana, Emanuele Forte

The International Workshop on Ice Caves

In order to assess the thickness and the inner structure of some permanent ice deposits in two high elevated alpine karstic caves of the Canin massif (Alpi Giulie, Italy), we performed several multi frequency Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) surveys. The surveys have been conducted within the project MONICA (MOnitoring of Ice within Caves), aimed at the paleoclimatic characterization of the considered cave ice deposits. GPR surveys have proved to be crucial also in finding the most suitable place for carrying out a drilling core. This has been particularly useful in the Vasto’s ice cave (VIC) in which the direct/visual estimation …

Numerical Modeling Of Formation Of A Static Ice Cave – Ningwu Ice Cave, Shanxi, China, Yaolin SHI, Shaohua YANG 2014 Lab of Computational Geodynamics, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences

Numerical Modeling Of Formation Of A Static Ice Cave – Ningwu Ice Cave, Shanxi, China, Yaolin Shi, Shaohua Yang

The International Workshop on Ice Caves

Ningwu Ice Cave in Shanxi province, China, is the largest Ice cave in China. We use Finite Element Method(FEM) to model the process of heat transfer in the ice cave. We not only calculate thermal conduction in spring, summer and fall, but also calculate the convective heat transfer in winter by introducing an equivalent thermal conductivity of cave air. Our computation shows that the ice cave can be formed within a decade, and reach a stable cyclic state in few centuries. Our calculation also shows that if people set a trap door at the ice cave entrance, especially in winter, …

One-Dimensional Weakly Nonlinear Model Equations For Rossby Waves, David Henry, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

In this study we explore several possibilities for modelling weakly nonlinear Rossby waves in fluid of constant depth, which propagate predominantly in one direction. The model equations obtained include the BBM equation, as well as the integrable KdV and Degasperis-Procesi equations.

Detecting Non-Seismic Precursor Earthquake Signals Using Tree Antennas, Jaqueline O. Lopez 2014 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Detecting Non-Seismic Precursor Earthquake Signals Using Tree Antennas, Jaqueline O. Lopez

STAR Program Research Presentations

Forecasting earthquakes has yet to be achieved. However, there are numerous non-seismic precursor signals, which become detectable weeks to days before major events – for instance changes in Earth’s electrical surface potential. These changes are due to the arrival of positive electronic charge carriers, known as positive holes, stress-activated deep in the Earth’s crust, in the hypocenter of the future earthquake. Trees can be used as antennas for detecting the surface potential changes due to these mobile charges. This configuration allows for the detection of diurnal variations of the ground potential. Although we only had 105 days worth of data, …

Evaluation Of Earthquake Hazard For Las Vegas Valley, Nevada Incorporating Probabilistic Hazard Assessment And Non--Linear Site Response, Suchan Lamichhane

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Abstract from Manuscript 1, "An alternative analysis of the probabilistic seismic hazard for Las Vegas Valley, Nevada": Probabilistic seismic hazard calculations relevant for rock-site conditions in the Las Vegas Valley, Nevada (LVV) have been computed that account for seismic sources that are not included in the current (2008) USGS national seismic hazard model (NSHM) because of insufficient knowledge or documentation, using the commercial software package EZ-FRISK. The LVV is underlain by a system of mapped, active normal faults that comprise the Las Vegas Valley Fault System (LVVFS), with maximum potential earthquakes to M6.8. The 2008 NSHM explicitly includes only one …

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Repeated Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) surveys are quickly becoming the de facto method for measuring spatial variability of montane snowpacks at high resolution. This study examines the potential of a 750 km2 LiDAR-derived dataset of snow depths, collected during the 2007 northern Colorado Cold Lands Processes Experiment (CLPX-2), as a validation source for an operational hydrologic snow model. The SNOw Data Assimilation System (SNODAS) model framework, operated by the US National Weather Service, combines a physically-based energy-and-mass-balance snow model with satellite, airborne and automated ground-based observations to provide daily estimates of snowpack properties at nominally 1 km resolution …

U-Pb Zircon Geochronology Of Roxbury Conglomerate, Boston Basin, Massachusetts: Tectono-Stratigraphic Implications For Avalonia In And Beyond Se New England, Margaret D. Thompson, Jahandar Ramezani, James L. Crowley

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

High-precision CA-TIMS 206Pb/238U zircon dates from sandstone and Brighton igneous rocks associated with Roxbury Conglomerate in the Boston Basin, eastern Massachusetts provide constraints on the age and tectonic significance of these deposits. Detrital zircon suites from Roxbury-related sandstones representing, in ascending order, the Franklin Park Member (proposed name), the Brookline Member and the Squantum Member establish closely comparable maximum depositional ages of 595.14 ± 0.90, 598.87 ± 0.71 and 596.39 ± 0.79 Ma, respectively. The youngest of these is the best maximum age estimate of the conglomerate. Brighton dacite near the base of the Brookline Member and …

Aster, Andrew Nyblade, Audrey D. Huerta, Sridhar Anandakrisnan, Terry Wilson, David S. Heeszel, Ian W.D. Dalziel

Geological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

We constrain azimuthal anisotropy in the West Antarctic upper mantle using shear wave splitting parameters obtained from teleseismic SKS, SKKS and PKS phases recorded at 37 broad-band seismometres deployed by the POLENET/ANET project. We use an eigenvalue technique to linearize the rotated and shifted shear wave horizontal particle motions and determine the fast direction and delay time for each arrival. High-quality measurements are stacked to determine the best fitting splitting parameters for each station. Overall, fast anisotropic directions are oriented at large angles to the direction of Antarctic absolute plate motion in both hotspot and no-net-rotation frameworks, showing that the …

An Analysis Of The Green Knoll Salt Dome, Located In The Southeast Green Canyon, Deep Water Gulf Of Mexico, Randal J. Broussard 2014 University of New Orleans

An Analysis Of The Green Knoll Salt Dome, Located In The Southeast Green Canyon, Deep Water Gulf Of Mexico, Randal J. Broussard

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The western portion of the Mississippi/Atwater fold belt in the Gulf of Mexico contains what is known as The Green Knoll Salt Dome. The creation and growth of this salt diapir is punctuated by salt deposition, salt migration, sediment loading, and is linked to the “Frampton” fold belt. An indicator of these growth periods is exhibited in an angular unconformity (halo-kinetic sequence boundary) that flanks the diapir. This unconformity developed during the Miocene-Pliocene chronostratigraphic boundary. The “Redwood” (Green Canyon 1001) prospect was drilled after the discovery of middle Miocene sands containing hydrocarbons in the Mad Dog field (GC 826). The …

Fault Coupling And Potential For Earthquakes On The Creeping Section Of The Central San Andreas Fault, Jeremy Maurer, Kaj Johnson 2014 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Fault Coupling And Potential For Earthquakes On The Creeping Section Of The Central San Andreas Fault, Jeremy Maurer, Kaj Johnson

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The 150 km long central section of the San Andreas Fault (CSAF) in central California creeps at the surface and has not produced a large earthquake historically. However, sections of the San Andreas Fault to the north and south are known to have ruptured repeatedly in M~7-8 earthquakes. It is currently unclear whether the creeping CSAF could rupture in large earthquakes, either individually or along with earthquakes on the locked sections to the north and south. We invert Global Positioning System and interferometric synthetic aperture radar data with elastic block models to estimate the degree of locking on the CSAF …

Targeted Full-Waveform Inversion For Recovering Thin- And Ultra-Thin-Layer Properties Using Radar And Seismic Reflection Methods, Esther Babcock 2014 Boise State University

Targeted Full-Waveform Inversion For Recovering Thin- And Ultra-Thin-Layer Properties Using Radar And Seismic Reflection Methods, Esther Babcock

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and seismic reflection methods are useful geophysical tools for near-surface characterization. Analysis of radar or seismic reflection data can combine velocity analysis with common physical transformations to provide subsurface physical properties such as subsurface porosity, density, and contaminant locations. However, reliable quantitative characterization of thin subsurface layers may be impossible using standard reflection data processing techniques, e.g. velocity analysis, if the layer thickness is below the conventional resolution limits of the data. The limiting layer thickness for layer resolution may be up to ½ or even ¾ of the dominant wavelength (λ) of the …

In-Situ Viscoelastic Soil Parameter Estimation Using Love Wave Inversion, Michael Wayne Morrison 2014 Boise State University

In-Situ Viscoelastic Soil Parameter Estimation Using Love Wave Inversion, Michael Wayne Morrison

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Industry best practices for estimating viscoelastic soil properties employ either crosshole seismic surveys, or ex-situ laboratory testing. The former method can be costly, and its area of investigation limited to a few meters. The latter method samples only a tiny volume from the research area, and requires that samples be disturbed from their native condition. We investigated an alternative method that uses Love wave inversion to estimate layer geometry, shear modulus, and soil viscosity. We derived a method for determining the complex velocity of Love wave modes in horizontally layered viscoelastic media, and used the method to investigate the behavior …

3d Seismic Mapping Of Probable Tripolitic Chert Bodies In Osage County, Oklahoma, Richard Craddock Benson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Mississippi Lime play is an important recent oil and gas development in the mid-continent of the United States. In April of 2007, Chesapeake Energy Corporation used horizontal drilling and tracing to bring the Howell 1-33H well online. This well revitalized the Mississippi Lime play, expanding exploration with potential Mississippian reservoirs.

The Mississippian section is a complex carbonate reservoir containing several distinct lithologies. An important Mississippian lithology known from outcrops in Arkansas and Missouri is tripolitic chert, or tripolite; a bleach, highly diagenetically altered, silica rock with high porosity, low density, and high permeability. Tripolite is an important reservoir target …

Finite Difference Modeling Of Surface-~Wave Scattering For Shallow Cavity Detection, Heston Travis Norcott 2014 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Finite Difference Modeling Of Surface-~Wave Scattering For Shallow Cavity Detection, Heston Travis Norcott

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Data collection and analysis of scattering of Rayleigh-type surface waves are investigated for locating shallowly buried cavities. Surface-based seismic experiments conducted by others at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Engineering Geophysics Test Site (EGTS) demonstrate scattering of Rayleigh waves caused by buried empty barrels (essentially air-filled cavities). The interpretation of the data is complicated by factors such as the presence of a high-velocity geologic layer just below the cavity.

This research uses a finite-difference seismic wave propagation code to compute time histories for a model that represents the Engineering Geophysics Test Site. By adding cavities to a background …
