Orthogonally protected 1,2-diaminopropanoic acids (DAPs) have been synthesised in good yields by the ring-opening of 3-unsubstituted N-activated aziridine 2-carboxylates with para-methoxybenzylamine. The choice of both the N-activating group and ester alkyl group had a significant influence on the ratio of attack at the a or b positions of the aziridine. However, the regiochemical outcome is not predictable.

Some such proteins include the small Ras and Rho GTPase superfamilies, nuclear lamins A and B, and the kinesin motor proteins CENP-E and F. Heparan sulfate is a complex cell-surface proteoglycan that serves many important roles in biology, such as growth and development, immune response and pathogenesis. Heparan sulfate is structurally heterogeneous due to the variable post- glycosylation modifications, particularly the generation of diverse sets of sulfate esters (sulfoforms) for any given disaccharide unit. A general methodology for the generation of dipropionate functionalities using cyclic 7-membered vinylsulfones has been devised for the purpose of synthesizing polyketide natural products such as aplyronine A. Final oxidative cleavage via ozonolysis has been shown to be difficult providing variable yields. Furthermore, elegant synthesis of the C28-C34 segment of the aplyronine A actin binding tail has proved elusive. Utilization of OsO4 and catalytic citric acid has led to a methodology whereby harsh ozonolysis procedures can be mostly avoided. The present report describes the X-ray structural and theoretical studies of some new pinacolboronate esters, and it also outlines the use of the target structures in Suzuki coupling reactions to produce new aromatic or heteroaromatic esters and amides. X-ray structural analysis of the studied compounds revealed that the pinacolborane ring's position with respect to the benzene ring varies, depending on the particular environment. An ortho-positioned carboxylic ester (methyl ester) causes a nearly perpendicular orientation of the pinacolborane unit with respect to the benzene ring, whereas an ortho-positioned amide (N,N-dimethylamide) causes the pinacolborane unit to orient itself nearly coplanar. Ketones, amides, and thioesters form enol silanes and add to N-phenylnitrones in one pot in the presence of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate and trialkylamine. The reaction is general to a range of silyl trifluoromethanesulfonates and N-phenylnitrones. The b-(silyloxy)amino carbonyl products are stable to chromatography and can be isolated in 63-99% yield.

Electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS) and directed ortho-metalation (DoM) involve the direct substitution of an arene hydrogen. A major drawback involving EAS is the necessity for harsh forcing conditions for the reaction to proceed. Catalysts such as Lewis acids FeBr3 and AICI3 for the introduction of halogens and acyl groups, respectively, are each highly toxic and corrosive. Kyrock is a coarse grained sandstone with a complex mixture of organic and inorganic compounds. Mining of Kyrock is for use in road construction and roofing. Kyrock samples were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy to obtain elemental analysis. High levels of carbon indicate the presence of organic compounds. Analysis of an acid digestion of the samples using inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy showed inorganic compounds such as titanium oxide, vanadium oxide along with traces of arsenic. Elemental analysis of samples indicates a percent of carbon, and sulfur with no notable traces of nitrogen. Pyrolysis of the samples was done using gas …

Mycosubtilin is a naturally occurring antifungal obtained from Bacillus subtilis that also displays limited antibiotic activity. Structurally, mycosubtilin is a macrocycliclipoheptapeptide of sequence Asn-Tyr-Asn-Gln-Pro-Ser-Asn, with the N-terminal Asn joined by a β-amino fatty acid. Besides the antifungal and antibiotic activities,these molecules are also hemolytic in nature.
