The reaction of metal carbides with polyol esters found in aerospace lubricants and phosphate esters commonly used as additives was investigated. Carbides were of particular interest since modern materials under consideration at high temperature bearings have surfaces that are primarily metal carbides. Vanadium and chromium carbide were found to react with the ester and phosphate ester by a transesterification reaction, producing an alkyl phosphate which is less stable than the aromatic phosphate esters. Parylenes are a class of organic compounds which have gained significant attention due to their application as coatings in areas such as medical devices and electronics. This review highlights the development of synthetic pathways to Octafluoro[2.2]Paracyclophane, commonly referred to as parylene AF4. Methods which have been used to functionalise AF4 are also presented.

Donor-acceptor copolymers have received a great deal of attention for application as organic semiconductors, in particular as the active layers in low-cost consumer electronics. The functional groups grafted to the polymer backbones generally dictate the molecular orbital energies of the final materials as well as aid in self-assembly. Additionally, the side chains attached to these functional groups not only dictate the solubility of the final materials, but also their morphological characteristics. The bulk of the research presented in this dissertation focuses on the synthesis and structure-property relationships of polymers containing novel acceptor motifs. For fluid dynamical analysis of breakdown waves, we employ a one-dimensional, three-component (electrons, ions and neutral particles) fluid model to describe a steady-state, ionizing wave propagating counter to strong electric fields. The electron gas temperature and therefore the electron fluid pressure is assumed to be large enough to sustain the wave motion down the discharge tube. Such waves are referred to as antiforce waves. The complete set of equations describing such waves consists of the equations of conservation of mass, momentum and energy coupled with Poisson’s equation. Oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) containing latent electrophilic groups can be highly useful in antisense drug development and many other applications such as chemical biology and medicine, where covalent cross-linking of ODNs with mRNA, protein and ODN is required. However, such ODN analogues cannot be synthesized using traditional technologies due to the strongly nucleophilic conditions used in traditional deprotection/cleavage process.

To solve this long lasting and highly challenging problem in nucleic acid chemistry, I used the 1,3-dithian-2-yl-methoxycarbonyl (Dmoc) function to protect the exo-amino groups on the nucleobases dA, dC and dG, and to design the linker between the nascent ODN and solid support. …

An Acid Catalyzed Reversible Ring-Opening/Ring-Closure Reaction Involving A Cyano-Rhodamine Spirolactam, H. Li, H. Guan, X. Duan, J. Hu, Guiren Wang, Qian Wang

Cyanamide was introduced into the rhodamine spirolactam framework to produce a colorless and non-fluorescent compound RBCN. It shows a reversible ring-opening/ring-closure process in response to the solution pH, which exhibits an “ON/OFF” switching in its fluorescence. Different from other rhodamine-type dyes, the ring-open form of RBCN is stable in protic solvents under neutral, near neutral and basic conditions, showing a pink color and very strong fluorescence. We also demonstrated the potential of RBCN in live cell imaging.

Amino acid and peptide oxo-esters have played an important role in peptide chemistry for many years. Various amino acid esters are commonly used as protecting groups for peptide synthesis in solution. Moreover, activated phenyl ester derivatives have been used for chemical ligation of peptides. However, the synthesis of amino acid and peptide oxo-esters is commonly performed under acidic or basic conditions. Under acidic conditions, acid-sensitive protecting groups may be cleaved, and under basic conditions racemization of amino acid esters is a common problem. Current wet chemical methods for biomass composition analysis using two-step sulfuric acid hydrolysis are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and unable to provide structural information about biomass. Infrared techniques provide fast, low-cost analysis, are non-destructive, and have shown promising results. Chemometric analysis has allowed researchers to perform qualitative and quantitative study of biomass with both near-infrared and mid-infrared spectroscopy. This review summarizes the progress and applications of infrared techniques in biomass study, and compares the infrared and the wet chemical methods for composition analysis. Cyclotriveratrylene (CTV) is a supramolecular scaffold with applications in host-guest chemistry, analytical detection, drug delivery and liquid crystals. We have discovered that CTV rearranges to a highly functionalized anthracene derivative that is ideal for the synthesis of 9,10-disubstituted anthracene derivatives that are useful for the construction of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Several diaryl anthracene derivatives have been synthesized and analyzed, and were found to have excellent electroluminescent properties, including one analog that exhibits an exceptionally high quantum yield. The thesis describes the silylation-based kinetic resolution for α-hydroxy carbonyl compounds catalyzed by isothiourea catalyst as well as our effort to make novel chiral isothiourea catalyst.

In Chapter 1, general background will be introduced, including chirality, general methods to obtain enantiopure compounds and kinetic resolution. In Chapter 2, the mechanism of the chiral recognition was discussed and a novel isothiourea catalyst was design to investigate the mechanism. The synthesis of the new catalyst was also described in this chapter.

Acenes have been explored by a number of research groups in the field of organic electronics with a particular emphasis on transistor materials. This group has been actively studying acene‐based organic semiconductors for more than a decade using a crystal engineering approach and has developed acene derivatives for applications in field‐effect transistors, light‐emitting diodes, and photovoltaics. The focus of this dissertation is to utilize chemical functionalization as a probe to investigate the reactivity of N-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (N-MWCNTs). The surface of N-MWCNTs, being a set of potentially reactive graphene edges, provides a large number of reactive sites for chemical modification, so considerable changes in chemical and physical properties can be envisaged. We observed that both reduction (dissolving metal reduction/alkylation) and oxidation (H2SO4/HNO3 and H2SO4/KMnO4 mixtures) of N-MWCNTs lead to formation of interesting spiral channels and spiraled carbon nanoribbons. Electrochemical diazonium grafting offers versatile functionalization of chemically inert graphite under mild condition, which is particularly suitable for CNT composite modification. Tetrafluorinated carboxylphenyl diazonium grafting provides the most controllable functionalization chemistry allowing near monolayer levels of functionality on carbon nanotubes. The functional density was successfully quantified by anion selective dye-assay and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of thiol-Au self-assembled monolayers (SAM) as a calibration reference. This technique enables monolayer functionality at the tips of carbon nanotube membranes for biomimetic pumps and valves as well as thin conductive layers for CNT-based high area electrochemical support electrodes.

Two sediments were demineralized and sequentially fractionated into extracted fractions [free lipid (FL), bound lipid (BL) and lignin (LG)] and residual fractions [free lipid free (FLF), bound lipid free (BLF) and lignin free (LGF)]. The sorption isotherms of phenanthrene (Phen) were examined to evaluate the importance of various fractions on sorption. A lignin extraction procedure was for the first time applied to separate the lignin or degraded lignin fraction from sediment organic matter (SOM). Although microporosity and surface area of natural organic matter (NOM) are crucial to mechanistic evaluation of the sorption process for nonpolar organic contaminants (NOCs), they have wrongly been estimated by the N2 adsorption technique. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C NMR), and benzene, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen adsorption techniques were used to characterize structural and surface properties for different condensed NOM samples, which were related to the sorption behavior of phenanthrene (Phen). Much is anticipated from the development and deployment of nanomaterials in biological organisms, but concerns remain regarding their biocompatibility and target specificity. Here we report our study of the transport, biocompatibility and toxicity of purified and stable silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs, 13.1 ± 2.5 nm in diameter) upon the specific developmental stages of zebrafish embryos using single NP plasmonic spectroscopy. We find that single Ag NPs passively diffuse into five different developmental stages of embryos (cleavage, early-gastrula, early-segmentation, late-segmentation, and hatching stages), showing stage-independent diffusion modes and diffusion coefficients.
