Perception of the spatial vertical is important for maintaining and stabilizing vertical posture during body motion. The velocity storage pathway of vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), which integrates vestibular, optokinetic, and proprioception in the vestibular nuclei vestibular-only (VO) neurons, has spatio-temporal properties that are defined by eigenvalues and eigenvectors of its system matrix. The yaw, pitch and roll eigenvectors are normally aligned with the spatial vertical and corresponding head axes. Misalignment of the roll eigenvector with the head axes was hypothesized to be an important contributor to the oscillating vertigo during MdDS. Methods: We conducted this prospective longitudinal qualitative study during the four months (June-September 2020) coinciding with the peak and trough of the first wave of Pakistan's COVID-19 pandemic. Background: The application of molecular diagnostics has identified enteric group adenovirus serotypes 40 and 41 as important causes of diarrhea in children. However, many aspects of the epidemiology of adenovirus 40/41 diarrhea have not been described.
Methods: We used data from the 8-site Etiology, Risk Factors, and Interactions of Enteric Infections and Malnutrition and the Consequences for Child Health and Development Project birth cohort study to describe site- and age-specific incidence, risk factors, clinical characteristics, and seasonality.

This study sought to assess the benefits of different learning activities associated with student engagement and performance on subsequent examinations regarding the integumentary system. For this study, three different hands-on laboratory activities (i.e., treatments) were given during different laboratory sessions. Animal models of TBI attempt to replicate the impact forces and pathology of injury in humans. However, in these models, the forces generated at the time of impact are poorly understood. Vallecular cysts, also known as epiglottic mucous retention cysts are known to be generally self-limiting laryngeal lesion. They can however also be associated with airway obstruction, and dysphagia in infants. In adults, they are usually asymptomatic, and usually incidentally diagnosed. At times they are diagnosed during rapid sequence intubation, as they may contribute to endotracheal intubation difficulty. Moreover, there is question as to the correlation between vallecular cysts and the incidence of acute epiglottitis, as a vallecular cyst may become infected and cause a localized expansion of inflammation and infection. This expansion from the vallecula progresses to epiglottis.

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has been adopted as an approach in kidney surgery. Laparoscopic kidney surgery has been introduced in the 1990s with robotics emerging a decade after. The minimally invasive approach has been technically feasible and has been shown to be noninferior with preserved oncology standards to open surgery. The ubiquitous use of MIS for kidney cancer has been standard of practice; however, unplanned conversion to open kidney surgery has been characterized at 4.9% for laparoscopic radical nephrectomy compared to 6.0% in robotic radical nephrectomy. Muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) represents approximately 25% of all bladder cancer and carries a significant risk of mortality. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and radical cystectomy (RC) is the standard of care for MIBC. One complication associated with RC is ureteral anastomotic leak with a predicted rate of 3%. The objective of this National Surgical Quality Improvement Project (NSQIP) database analysis is to determine if correlations exist between radiation (RAD) and/or NAC before RC and anastomotic leak in the treatment of MIBC.

Intraoperative proximal femur fractures (PFF) occur in 3.7% of total hip arthroplasties (THA) using the standard mallet broaching technique and increase a patient’s risk of revision surgery from 3.4% to 10%. The Depuy KINCISE automatic broaching system is designed to attenuate the risk of these fractures by applying consistent co-linear force to the broach. The aim of this study is to determine if the KINCISE system decreases the rate of intraoperative PFF fracture during THA compared to the standard mallet technique.

We present the case of a 20-year-old male patient with no cardiac history coming in for left sided chest pain described as “burning” sensation. On physical exam, it was noted that patient had hypertonic chest wall muscles that were tight and spastic when palpated on the left chest wall. We used Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) to help patient relieve hypertonic muscle. We chose to use muscle energy technique (MET) since this relies on reciprocal inhibition with the end result being relaxation of the target muscle.

Those who suffer a partial thickness ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tear often undergo a period of nonoperative management including physical therapy rehabilitation. This treatment is aimed at optimizing range of motion (ROM) and strengthening the supporting structures around the elbow to help offload the UCL.

Unfortunately, some of these patients fail nonoperative management and require surgical intervention. Globally, more than a quarter of pregnant patients experience low back pain (LBP) during pregnancy with additional complaints of pelvic girdle pain (PGP) and other somatic dysfunctions. Though the standard of care for LBP in pregnancy is often analgesics, concerns about potential side effects that may cause lasting harm to the fetus may preclude pregnant patients from taking pain medications. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) is a nonpharmacologic treatment option that is routinely used for LBP in non-pregnant patients. Given the low risk of adverse effects, OMM may prove to be beneficial for pregnant patients suffering from LBP or PGP.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is one of the most severe forms of mental illness, yet mechanisms remain unclear. A widely established brain finding in SZ is hippocampal atrophy, and a coherent explanation similarly is lacking. Epidemiological evidence suggests increased cerebrovascular and cardiovascular complications in SZ independent of lifestyle and medication, pointing to disease-specific pathology. Endothelial cell contributions to blood-brain barrier (BBB) compromise may influence neurovascular unit and peripheral vascular function, and we hypothesize that downstream functional and structural abnormalities may be explained by impaired BBB.

Pulmonary embolism is a common yet potentially life-threatening diagnosis that should not be missed in the Emergency Department. Common presenting symptoms include dyspnea, pleuritic chest pain, cough, hemoptysis, syncope or pre-syncope. Less often, however, presenting symptoms can include abdominal pain. A clinician should recognize that pain adjacent to the diaphragm (including the lower chest and upper abdomen), can be secondary to underlying pathology either above or below the diaphragm. Here we describe an unusual case of pleuritic, post-prandial, right upper quadrant abdominal pain that was a result of pulmonary embolism.
