Epigenetic information is not permanently encoded in the DNA sequence, but rather consists of reversible, heritable modifications that regulate the gene expression profile of a cell. Epigenetic modifications can result in cellular changes that can be long lasting and include DNA methylation, histone methylation, histone acetylation, and RNA methylation. As epigenetic modifications are reversible, the enzymes that add (epigenetic writers), the proteins that decode (epigenetic readers), and the enzymes that remove (epigenetic erasers) these modifications can be targeted to alter cellular function and disease biology. While epigenetic modifications and their contributions are intense topics of current research in the context …

Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump May Attenuate Adverse Hemodynamic Effects Of Negative Intrathoracic Pressure In Cardiogenic Shock, Faris Araj
The VAD Journal
High negative intrathoracic pressure (NIP), as occurs during obstructive sleep apnea or hiccups, results in adverse hemodynamic consequences, specifically a decrease in left ventricle (LV) performance. These untoward effects can potentially be catastrophic in the case of an already compromised LV in cardiogenic shock. The interplay of intra-aortic balloon pump counter pulsation during abrupt high NIP in cardiogenic shock is described.

Evaluation Of Respiratory Function Using Blood Gas Parameters In Yucatan Minipigs Following Spinal Cord Injury, Jackson Gallagher, Monique Morgan, Chase Knibbe, Destiny Gibson, Maxwell Boakye
The Cardinal Edge
There are approximately 17,810 new spinal cord injuries (SCI) in the U.S. each year [1]. Physical damage to the spinal cord has the potential to interfere with normal motor, sensory, and/or autonomic function, such as impairment of the respiratory system. In fact, respiratory insufficiency is the number one cause of mortality and morbidity after SCI. The more rostral the injury, the more likely there will be disruption to normal ventilation (generally rostral to T6) [2]. To conduct relevant preclinical research, it has been shown that large animal models, such as the Yucatan minipig, have a better success rate of translating …

Ganglion cells are the projection neurons of the retina. Intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) express the photopigment melanopsin and also receive input from rods and cones via bipolar cells and amacrine cells. In primates, multiple types of ipRGCs have been identified. The ipRGCs with somas in the ganglion cell layer have been studied extensively, but less is known about those with somas in the inner nuclear layer, the "displaced" cells. To investigate their synaptic inputs, three sets of horizontal, ultrathin sections through central macaque retina were collected using serial block-face scanning electron microscopy. One displaced ipRGC received nearly all …

BACKGROUND: The use of non-ionizing electric fields from low-intensity voltage sources (< 10 V) to control malignant tumor growth is showing increasing potential as a cancer treatment modality. A method of applying these low-intensity electric fields using multiple implanted electrodes within or adjacent to tumor volumes has been termed as intratumoral modulation therapy (IMT).
PURPOSE: This study explores advancements in the previously established IMT optimization algorithm, and the development of a custom treatment planning system for patient-specific IMT. The practicality of the treatment planning system is demonstrated by implementing the full optimization pipeline on a brain phantom with robotic electrode implantation, postoperative imaging, and treatment stimulation.
METHODS: The integrated planning pipeline in 3D Slicer begins with importing and segmenting patient magnetic resonance images (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) images. The segmentation process is manual, followed by a semi-automatic smoothing step that allows …

Characterization Of The Long Non-Coding Rna Proins In Human Pancreatic Β-Cell, Shareena Saeed Lootah
Dissertations
It is well established that the genome is pervasively transcribed. Only 2% of those transcripts are translated into proteins, and the remaining 98% are non-translated, generating the non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) species. A close observation of these transcripts directed the scientific community to their increasing potential functional roles in the cells. Indeed, the literature exponentially unveils this notion, with many ncRNAs showing substantial and variable biological functions. The field is in its infancy; however, efforts are accelerating to discover and define this ocean of new species.
Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are sub-species of ncRNAs with an arbitrary size of more than …

The cerebellum’s role in affective processing is increasingly recognized in the literature, but remains poorly understood, despite abundant clinical evidence for affective disruptions following cerebellar damage. To improve the characterization of emotion processing and investigate how attention allocation impacts this processing, we conducted a meta-analysis on task activation foci using GingerALE software. Eighty human neuroimaging studies of emotion including 2761 participants identified through Web of Science and ProQuest databases were analyzed collectively and then divided into two categories based on the focus of attention during the task: explicit or implicit emotion processing. The results examining the explicit emotion tasks identified …

Objectives
Endovascular procedures for lower extremity revascularization are becoming more commonplace due to low morbidity, mortality, and shorter length of stay. The role of open bypass must be reconsidered. Aortobifemoral bypass is the gold standard for extensive aortoiliac occlusive disease (AIOD); however, thoracodistal bypass holds a niche position. We investigate indications and outcomes of thoracodistal bypass.
Methods
Medical records of five patients who underwent thoracodistal bypass at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) between 2012 and 2019 were reviewed. Contemporary and historical literature was reviewed.
Results
Indications included calcified paravisceral pathology, previous failed or infected bypass grafts, and prior abdominal operations. …

Comparative Anatomical Study Of The Brachial Plexus Of Primates, Alison Leann Camero
Masters Theses
Old world monkeys, new world monkeys, and humans all originate from a common ancestor. Although humans and old world monkeys are phylogenetically more closely related, old world monkeys and new world monkeys have similar locomotion. A difference in muscle patterns exists between old world monkeys, new world monkeys, and humans. Different musculature may be due to differences in locomotive patterns and species-specific use of their forearms. Muscles in the forelimbs are innervated by the nerves of the brachial plexus. There are differences among the brachial plexuses of human and non-human primates as well as variability within the species.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variant of concern comprises several sublineages, with BA.2 and BA.2.12.1 having replaced the previously dominant BA.1 and with BA.4 and BA.5 increasing in prevalence worldwide. We show that the large number of Omicron sublineage spike mutations leads to enhanced angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) binding, reduced fusogenicity, and severe dampening of plasma neutralizing activity elicited by infection or seven clinical vaccines relative to the ancestral virus. Administration of a homologous or heterologous booster based on the Wuhan-Hu-1 spike sequence markedly increased neutralizing antibody titers and breadth against BA.1, BA.2, BA.2.12.1, BA.4, and …
