Isolated superior mesenteric dissection (ISMAD) is an uncommon condition, often diagnosed incidentally for presentations of acute abdominal pain. Early identification and treatment are crucial as complications such as bowel ischemia or vessel rupture can occur. There remain no established treatment guidelines, making surgical and endovascular indications controversial. A 60-year-old male presented with acute abdominal pain, and was diagnosed with ISMAD via computed tomography imaging. He was initially managed conservatively which progressed to worsening abdominal pain, hypertensive crisis, and hemoperitoneum on follow-up computed tomography angiography (CTA). This poster highlights current and updated guidelines for chemical and mechanical prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism in patients undergoing major and minor orthopedic surgery. Existing and new potential therapies were reviewed, as well as an analysis into the lack of high-quality risk-prediction score calculators to improve personalization of prophylaxis regimens. Alongside a summary of existing and potential new prophylaxis protocols, a call to action to improve validity of said risk score calculators so as to improve patient outcomes and personalized medicine is made.

Improving medication adherence and blood pressure control is challenging in the management of hypertension. Hypertension is a risk factor for severe health complications such as kidney failure, premature death, stroke, and heart disease. Even though effective hypertensive medications are available, patients have a challenging time adhering to taking the medication as instructed.

There are several reasons patients do not adhere to taking their medication such as lack of understanding, forgetfulness, negative beliefs, inadequate communication, complex dosing regimen, cost, and access to healthcare. The carotid artery, responsible for blood flow to the brain, and the middle cerebral artery (MCA), which supplies the cerebrum, are both susceptible to atherosclerosis, a condition that impairs blood flow and can lead to cognitive decline and ischemic strokes. This study investigates whether blood flow and vasodilation responses in the MCA during a hypercapnic challenge are comparable to those in the common carotid artery, which supplies the entire brain. Myocarditis patients can chronically develop dilated cardiomyopathy and autoreactive T cells could contribute to the disease pathogenesis, but defining their antigen specificity remains a major challenge. To fill this gap, we generated T cell receptor (TCR) transgenic (Tg) mice specific to cardiac myosin heavy chain (Myhc)-α 334–352 and made a few observations. First, we unexpectedly noted both CD4 and CD8 T cells expressing TCRs specific to Myhc-α 334–352. Second, while Tg T cells from myocarditis-resistant C57BL/6J mice did not respond to Myhc-α 334–352, those from immunized mice responded, indicating that in vivo priming is necessary to break tolerance. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to challenge the assumption that the marginal artery (MA) of Drummond is fully continuous. BACKGROUND: The MA is a crucial arterial anastomosis that runs along the inner margin of the colon. Despite its importance, the continuity of the MA has been insufficiently evaluated in the literature. METHODS: We dissected the mesentery in 18 cadavers to explore the formation and identify any areas of discontinuity in the MA. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has undergone rapid expansion, emerging as a viable therapeutic option for low-risk patients in lieu of surgical aortic valve replacement. This paper aims to provide a review of the scientific evidence concerning TAVR in low-risk patients, encompassing both observational and clinical trial data. Furthermore, a substantial proportion of low-risk patients possesses a bicuspid aortic valve, necessitating careful examination of the pertinent anatomic and clinical considerations to TAVR that is highlighted in this review. Mechanical circulatory support devices have demonstrated efficacy in adult congenital patients with biventricular repairs. The off-label use of ventricular assist devices may be invaluable for managing end-stage single ventricle failure. We present the case of a 27-year-old male who developed heart failure, congestive hepatopathy, and, ultimately, cardiogenic shock. He received a HeartMate 3 (Abbott, Chicago, IL, USA) without complications one year after the surgery.

Postcardiotomy cardiogenic shock is a rare complication with high mortality. When patients do not respond to the placement of an intra-aortic balloon pump or pharmacological treatment, therapy with peripheral venoarterial extracorporeal membrane is a viable option that allows active resuscitation. The adjunct use of Impella® (Abiomed, Danvers, MA, USA) allows active unloading of the dysfunctional left ventricle. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is associated with adverse outcomes in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Our study suggests mildly elevated pulmonary vascular resistance ( > 2 to ≤ 3) is independently associated with major adverse cardiovascular events at 1-year follow-up. Early diagnosis of precapillary PH in CKD patients can potentially improve clinical outcomes.

In this paper, we introduce the numerical strategy for mixed uncertainty propagation based on probability and Dempster–Shafer theories, and apply it to the computational model of peristalsis in a heart-pumping system. Specifically, the stochastic uncertainty in the system is represented with random variables while epistemic uncertainty is represented using non-probabilistic uncertain variables with belief functions. The mixed uncertainty is propagated through the system, resulting in the uncertainty in the chosen quantities of interest (QoI, such as flow volume, cost of transport and work). Background: Children with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) have higher odds of developing social difficulties and/or an Autism Spectrum Disorder (AuSD) than the general population. Most research to date has utilized a parent-reported diagnosis and/or parent-reported questionnaire data. The purpose of this study is to identify the prevalence of AuSD diagnosis and associated risk factors in a patient sample from a medium-size children’s hospital.
