The neurophysiologic feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the formation of senile plaques and decrease of acetylcholine causing neuronal death, decline of cognitive performance and functional capacity. The physical activity (PA) brings benefits in these functions. The aim of the study was to analyze the cognitive profile and functional capacity of elderly with AD after PA. Twelve elderly with AD (mean age: 79±7.9 years old), five of the Training Group (TG), and seven of the Control Group (CG), from the Program of Cognitive and Functional Kinesiotherapy in Elderly with AD (PRO-CDA), for six months, three times a week for 60 …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Magnesium (Mg) is one of the most important micronutrients, and therefore its role in biological system has been extensively investigated. Particularly, Mg has a strong regulatory role in the immune system. The aim of this study was to investigate the behavior of plasma magnesium and the immune response after half-ironman triathlon. Blood samples from six athletes were collected before and immediately after the triathlon competition. Magnesium plasma concentration and immune parameters were analyzed (total white blood cells (WBC), neutrophils, (NE), lymphocytes (LY), eosinophils (EO) monocytes (MO) and basophils (BA)). Pre and post race values were compared by paired t-tests. Pearson's …

Evaluation Of A Program Of Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Phase 1 Modified For Patients Submitted To A Surgery For Coronary Artery Bypass Graft, Karina M. Da Mata, Cynthia K. Bachur, Simone G. Ramos, Cleverson R. Fernandes
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The coronary heart disease is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in the modern world. Its surgical treatment for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), aims to improve the functioning and the prognostic state. Physiotherapy and cardiac rehabilitation programs have an important role in the patient recuperation after the surgical treatment for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The program rehabilitation should be initiated as early as possible to reduce the deleterious effects of prolonged bed rest, establish the intensity of the effort scheduled, and reduce the patient permanence in the hospital. The objective of this study was to compare the …

Resistance training (RT) has been recommended to prevent muscle force and power decrease induced by aging. Neuromuscular tests are important tools to analyze muscle force function. The objective of the present study was to analyze the behavior of lower limb muscle power of elderly women submitted to 12 weeks of periodized RT. 16 women aged 65.5±3.6 years with a minimum of one year of previous experience in strength training were selected, they performed 24 sessions of RT divided in 3 mesocycles (MA, MB and MC), of 8 sessions each, with a session frequency of twice a week. The MA with …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The handball is characterized by a variety of movements accomplished with intensity alternation. In this way, the knowledge about the predominant energy sources in the actions, with the intention of bringing more effectiveness to the structuring and the prescription of the training, becomes fundamental. Because of that, the objective of this study was to determine the physiological characteristics of female handball athletes. The sample was constituted of 20 female athletes, participants of the Associação Atlética Universitária de Concórdia team - SC, in 2007. The maximum aerobic power (Bruce Protocol); maximum anaerobic power (Wingate Test) and lactate threshold were evaluated. The …

There is evidence that the risk of colon cancer is reduced by appropriate levels of physical exercise. However, the effects of single weekly bout of exercise are largely unknown. Our aim was to verify the effects of exercise once a week (1d-wk-1) and daily exercise training (5d-wk-1) in rats treated with the carcinogen 1-2- Dimethyl-hydrazine (DMH). Forty-two Wistar rats were used in the experiment. The groups G1 and G2 were sedentary (controls), the groups G1A and G2A were submitted 1d-wk-1 of swimming, and G1B and G2B were submitted 5d-wk-1 of swimming training for 8 weeks. The groups G2, G2A and …

Colon cancer risk is reduced by appropriate levels of physical exercise. Light exposure during the night conveys endocrine changes on melatonin rhythm produced by pineal gland. This hormone is considered as a potent anti-oxidant with oncostatic properties. Both factors are related to colon cancer, which risk can be estimated by the evaluation of pre-malignant factors of colonic mucosa such as the Aberrant Crypt Foci (ACF). This study aims to verify whether the beneficial effects of physical exercise are related to the activity of the pineal gland. Thus, 40 rats were divided into 5 groups: G0, G1 and G2 were sedentary, …

The aim of this study was to compare two methods of body composition evaluation in postmenopausal women, and establish correlations with the Body Mass Index (BMI). Twenty seven postmenopausal women (58.03±5.33) were evaluated by two body composition methods: Bioimpedance (Biodynamics 310) and Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA). Results of the fat mass showed by the DXA was 38.21±7.46% of the body mass, and 39.05±4.40% by the Bioimpedance, with 0.76 of correlation (Perason’s correlation test). In the other hand, the BMI found was 28.08±4.90. There was a high correlation between DXA and Bioimpedance; however low correlation between DXA and Bioimpedance with …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The etiology of the drift in VO2 in the respiratory compensatory threshold (RCT) during downhill running is unclear. It was investigated the velocities (VRCT) and VO2 in RCT (RCTVO2) in three different inclinations in the continuous incremental treadmill test (Tt). Eight sedentary women volunteered (24±2 years old) to undergo 10% downhill (DT), 10% uphill (UT) and near-level (NL) in Tt to exhaustion to determine the RCTVO2 and VRCT and peak VO2 on different days and were randomly allocated. VCO2 was examined as function of VE under the assumption that the RCT corresponds to the break point in the VE-VCO2 relationship. …

The running velocity on the anaerobic threshold (VAT) has been used as an important parameter of training performance. The purpose of this was to relate the VAT with the maximum aerobic velocity (MAV) and VO2max in two males. Age 26 years (+5.7), body mass 82.0 kg (+5.7) and height 182.5 cm (+4.9). It was applied the Léger-Boucher test on a track to determine the MAV and VO2max. After 72 hours, a minimum lactate test (MLAC) was applied. The VAT was identified as corresponding to the lower concentration of lactate (LAC), which was determined in portable lactimeter. The heart rate (HR) …

With increasing of obesity in children and adolescents the specialized care services, for the most serious cases, become imperative. Child and Adolescent Obesity Clinic, in the Clinics Hospital/Unicamp give assistance to patients between 03 and 19 years, with BMI≥percentile 95 of the CDC curve. This assistance involves physicians, nutritionists, psychologists and physical educators. For orientation of physical activities and its follow-up an effort test is used, the "go-and-come" test (Course-Navette), wich was proposed by Leger and Lembert (1982-1988). Children maturity was classified according to criteria of pubescence of Tanner (1962). Subjects: 33 boys, aged between 7 and 18 years old. …
