Technology changed our world and shapes our reality in forms that widely differ from the traditional ones. Discourse and persuasion are not an exception. This study analyzes the tweets and oral discourses of eight politicians and social leaders during three of the most important days in the independence struggle between Catalonia and Spain to argue that the way people in power try to persuade their voters is changing, especially in new social networks such as Twitter.

Past research reported blind participants tend to encode sensory details of encounters with stimuli they will later recall or recollect, whereas sighted individuals tend to abstract meaning from sensory information when encoding memories. Here we ask whether blind individuals’ use of perceptual in addition to semantic encoding extends to a task—word learning—whose purpose amounts to semantically encoding the word and definition. After studying the definitions of spoken or written words, blind braille readers (n = 23) and sighted print readers (n = 20) re-encountered each word and indicated whether it was previously presented in the same modality. We investigate sensitivity to island constraints in English native speakers and Najdi Arabic learners of English, examining (1) whether second language (L2) learners whose native language (L1) does not instantiate overt wh-movement are sensitive to island constraints and (2) the source of island effects. Under a grammatical account of islands, these effects arise due to violations of syntactic constraints. Under the resource-limitation account, island effects arise due to processing difficulty. The source of island effects is interesting to examine in L2 learners because it is possible that reduced processing abilities in the L2 may lead to the low acceptance of …

In previous work, I have documented and analyzed the persistence of mainstream ideologies around ’standard’ and ’nonstandard’ American English in the adult ESOL classroom and their connection to linguistic racism and anti-Blackness. This study explores how these ideologies developed more broadly, employing elements of raciolinguistic genealogy and metapragmatics to analyze historical language scholarship. I find that while the linguistic features of ‘nonstandard’ English have remained remarkably consistent in the popular imagination, they became increasingly linked with Blackness, especially during and after white backlash to the Great Migration (and other cultural and political changes) in the mid-20th century. The theme of this volume is generational trends in language change, with an emphasis on the Baby Boomer to Gen X transition as an important period of time. Many studies have found sharp changes in vowel systems in communities after the Baby Boomer Generation on the East Coast (Thiel and Dinkin 2020) and in the Midwest (Nesbitt 2021). The Book of Mormon has been studied for its thematic, literary, and theological content using almost exclusively qualitative methods (e.g., Turley, 2019; Morrill, 2017). However, scholars have conducted little analysis comparing it to the Bible, even though those who view it as scripture consider it directly comparable in purpose. (e.g., The Book of Mormon, 2015; McConkie, 1985). The present study applies quantitative linguistic analysis to statistically derive the distinctive language from the two volumes of scripture and identifies the key themes and language from the two books. Ideophones – imitative words using the stream of speech to simulate/depict the rise and fall of sensory perceptions and emotions and temporal experiences of completiveness, instantaneousness, and repetitiveness – have been characterized as semantically empty and context dependent. The research reported here tested a simple schematic for the semantic categories of Pastaza Kichwa ideophones by tracking neurological responses to ideophones categorized as VISUAL, MOTION, and SOUND. Seventeen native speakers of Pastaza Kichwa listened to audio clips of ideophones extracted from sentential contexts. U.S. Ashkenazi Jews may call their grandma “bubbe” ([bʊbi]) in Yiddish, but in Argentina they usually call her “bobe” ([βoβe]). Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants brought Yiddish to the U.S. and Argentina, where the language was exposed to English and Spanish and Yiddish speakers lost touch with each other as they assimilated to different cultures far away from one another. This study attempts to answer whether English-Yiddish speakers can understand Yiddish words as produced by a Spanish-Yiddish speaker. U.S. participants completed a perception test, listening to a list of 20 words gathered from two Argentinian consultants and answering a series of questions …

This paper investigates individuals who are proficient in two languages (bilinguals) and the speeds at which bilinguals process cognates (words with comparable form and meaning across languages). This paper cites two ongoing experiments: The Language Identification (LID) task and the Self-Paced Listening (SPL) task. Findings from the LID suggest that phonological overlap in cognates facilitates bilingual language processing speeds, when cognates are presented in isolation. Findings from the SPL suggest that syntactic overlap in cognates also facilitates bilingual language processing speeds, when cognates are presented in sentences. Where Do Central Cushitic Ejectives Come From?, Paul D. Fallon

This paper examines and accounts for the origin and presence of ejectives in Central Cushitic (CC) languages. Appleyard (2006) claimed that most occurrences of ejectives are due to borrowing from the Ethiosemitic languages. This is certainly true for all ejectives in Kemantney, and some in Blin and Xamtanga. However, examination of Appleyard’s data shows that only 37% of ejectives in Blin and 25% of ejectives in Xamtanga are found in borrowings. Most ejectives in CC in these two languages are therefore “of indubitable Agaw origin”, which suggests that ejectives are from the proto-language rather than through sound change. This paper …

The way language shapes perceptions about disability is a complex and long-debated topic within popular disability discourse. With the rise of “person-first” language in recent decades, this debate has shifted toward a grammatical, rather than lexical one, contrasting forms such as people with disabilities, disabled people, and the disabled. While these different construction types—prepositional, attributive, and nominalized, respectively—refer to the same entity, the purported connotations of each have been highly contested. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that attacks the immune system leading to people living with HIV (PLHIV) immunodeficient and more susceptible to other infections or diseases (UNAIDS, 2023b). This can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) within 8-10 years of infection (UNAIDS, 2023b). HIV does not always present symptoms, making it hard for people to identify their HIV status without proper screening. The lack of awareness around a person’s status has led HIV to spread worldwide. This article investigates the effectiveness of positive psychology interventions (PPIs) in an intensive English program for non-matriculated university students. Interventions based on the PERMA model were implemented through weekly 65-minute lessons given during the first class of each week. These were followed by short daily activities during the rest of the week. Using positive psychology topics as the content, students concurrently engaged in language learning activities. Many have claimed that pronominal adverbs, such as hereby, thereafter, and wherein, are a frequent, distinctive, and problematic in their use in legal language (Tiersma, 1999; Mellinkoff, 2004). The purpose of this study is to examine those claims empirically. In the present study, the prevalence of PAs in legal registers is compared to more general registers of contemporary American English to determine the extent to which these words are distinctly legal. This study describes how selected American poets, including Tom Andrews, Patti Smith, and Natasha Trethewey, engage the concept of creation through metaphor in their poetic and autobiographical writing. Online restaurant reviews contain expressions of customer expectations in prose as well as in star ratings that indicate overall customer satisfaction. In prose, one way customers communicate that expectations are or are not met is through a grammatical construction called adversative connectives (ACs) (i.e., constituents such as but, although, however, and even though). Fluent and skillful reading in English requires efficient and automatic letter and word recognition. Dysfluent reading can affect motivation for reading in English language learners, thereby limiting access to a wealth of language input from written texts. Extensive research of repeated reading in first language (L1) settings has been shown to increase reading rate, while comparatively little research has been done on repeated reading in second language (L2) settings. A perennial issue that nearly all language programs face with the arrival of new students is: where is the best place for each student to begin their course of study within our curricular structure given their current language abilities? When students have no previous language learning experience, the decision seems easy: place them in the beginning- level class. But when students have prior experience, deciding where they belong becomes more complicated given the wide range in the quality and quantity of previous exposure and the level of ability attained. When intercollegiate athletic participants were permitted the right to profit off of their name, image and likeness (NIL), the landscape of college sports was fundamentally changed. This qualitative explanatory case study investigated one consequence of that change: the discourse of amateurism. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has historically identified participants in the athletic programs it oversees with the word “student-athlete.” In the years since the word was first introduced, its meaning has generally been static. This dissertation examines the integration of first-generation migrants in Canada, focusing on the constructs of acculturation, language proficiency, and mental health. With nearly a quarter of Canada's population comprising migrants (Statistics Canada, 2022), understanding their adjustment is critical. งานวิจัยฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาภาพแทนของผู้หญิงที่นำเสนอผ่านมุกตลกในการ์ตูนบนเฟซบุ๊ก โดยใช้กรอบการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหาเชิงคุณภาพ (Qualitative Content Analysis; QCA) ในการค้นหาหัวข้อ (theme) และเพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการสร้างความตลกขบขันของมุกตลกในการ์ตูนบนเฟซบุ๊ก โดยใช้ทฤษฎีทั่วไปของภาษาสื่ออารมณ์ขัน (General Theory of Verbal Humor; GTVH) ในการวิเคราะห์แหล่งความรู้ (Knowledge Resource; KR) 6 ประการ ซึ่งเป็นองค์ประกอบต่าง ๆ ที่ช่วยในการสร้างความตลกขบขัน ได้แก่ ความขัดแย้งของตัวบท (Script Opposition) กลไกทางตรรกะ (Logical mechanism) สถานการณ์ (Situation) เป้าหมายในการล้อเลียน (Target) กลวิธ๊ในการบรรยาย (Narrative strategy) รูปภาษา (Language) โดยเก็บข้อมูลจากเพจเฟซบุ๊ก “เบื่อเมีย” และ “ฟอร์มหมาแก่” จำนวน 87 ตัวอย่าง ผลการวิจัยพบว่ามุกตลกในการ์ตูนบนเฟซบุ๊กนำเสนอภาพแทนของผู้หญิงจำนวน 5 หัวข้อ ได้แก่ การควบคุมจัดการ การแสดงออกทางอารมณ์ การรับประทานอาหาร การดูแลรักษารูปร่างหน้าตา และการใช้เงิน การนำเสนอผู้หญิงในลักษณะดังกล่าวนี้สะท้อนให้เห็นภาพแทนผู้หญิง (โดยเฉพาะในฐานะภรรยา) ว่าเป็นคนกินเก่ง ขี้โมโห เอาแต่ใจ บงการผู้ชาย ทั้งยังมีรูปร่างที่ไม่น่าดู ภาพแทนของผู้หญิงในลักษณะนี้ถูกนำเสนอผ่านตัวบทของความตลกขบขันซึ่งอาศัยความขัดแย้งของตัวบท (SO) เป็นองค์ประกอบที่โดดเด่นที่สุดที่มุกตลกในการ์ตูนช่องบนเฟซบุ๊กใช้ในสร้างความตลกขบขัน โดย SO ทำงานร่วมกันกับกลไกทางตรรกะ (LM) เสมอ อีกทั้งความตลกขบขันยังมักเกิดจากการทำงานร่วมกันของแหล่งความรู้ (KR) หลายประการด้วย

การรวมเสียงก้องและไม่ก้องเป็นปรากฏการณ์ที่สำคัญต่อภาษาตระกูลไท เพราะทำให้หน่วยเสียง พยัญชนะในภาษามีจำนวนน้อยลงแต่มีจำนวนวรรณยุกต์เพิ่มขึ้น วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาช่วงเวลาการรวมกัน ของเสียงก้องและไม่ก้องในภาษาไทย ภาษาล้านนา และภาษาอีสาน โดยศึกษาการเขียนคำที่ไม่ตรงตามประวัติคำ ในจารึกทั้งสามภาษา รูปเขียนที่ไม่ตรงตามประวัติคำบ่งชี้ว่าเกิดความสับสนระหว่างอักขระที่เมื่อแรกประดิษฐ์เคย เปรียบต่างด้านความก้องและไม่ก้องและแสดงว่าเกิดการรวมเสียงก้องและไม่ก้องขึ้นแล้ว ผลการศึกษาบ่งชี้ว่าการ รวมเสียงก้องและไม่ก้องในภาษาไทยเกิดขึ้นอย่างช้าในราวต้นพุทธศตวรรษที่ 20 ภาษาล้านนา และภาษาอีสาน เกิดขึ้นอย่างช้าราวกลางพุทธศตวรรษที่ 20 ช่วงระยะเวลาการรวมเสียงก้องและไม่ก้องในภาษาไทย ภาษาล้านนา และภาษาอีสานที่เกิดขึ้นในระยะเวลาใกล้เคียงกันบ่งชี้ว่าการรวมเสียงก้องและไม่ก้องเป็นพัฒนาการในภาษา ตระกูลไทน่าจะมีปัจจัยทางภูมิศาสตร์ประกอบ เนื่องจากผู้พูดทั้งสามภาษามีถิ่นฐานที่ใกล้กันและการ ติดต่อสื่อสารกันอาจนำการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางเสียงมาสู่ทั้งสามภาษาในเวลาไล่เลี่ยกัน ผลการศึกษานี้สอดคล้องกับ ข้อเสนอของ Li (1977), Gedney (1989), Bickner (1992) และ Tangsiriwattanakul (2020) ผู้เสนอว่าการ รวมเสียงก้องและไม่ก้องนี้เกิดขึ้นหลังจากการตั้งถิ่นฐานของกลุ่มคนไทในดินแดนประเทศไทยปัจจุบัน

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์ลักษณะทางกลสัทศาสตร์ของการขึ้นจมูกของเสียงสระที่ตามหลังพยัญชนะเสียดแทรก-เส้นเสียง /h/ คือ 1) สัดส่วนค่าระยะเวลาช่วงการขึ้นจมูกของเสียงสระต่อค่าระยะเวลาเสียงสระทั้งหมด และ 2) ค่าความต่างแอมพลิจูดของฟอร์เมินท์ที่หนึ่งกับจุดยอดนาสิกเทียบกับสระที่มีโครงสร้างพยางค์แบบอื่น ๆ และวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างค่าทางกลสัทศาสตร์ดังกล่าวกับปัจจัยทางภาษาศาสตร์สังคม ได้แก่ รุ่นอายุ วัจนลีลาตามความเป็นทางการ และวัจนลีลาตามผู้ฟัง เพื่อระบุสถานภาพและความหมายทางสังคมของการขึ้นจมูกของเสียงสระในภาษาไทยถิ่นอีสานจังหวัดร้อยเอ็ด เก็บข้อมูลจากการบันทึกเสียงของผู้พูดในการศึกษาการแปรตามวัจนลีลาตามความเป็นทางการและการแปรตามวัจนลีลาตามผู้ฟัง นอกจากนี้ เก็บข้อมูลด้วยวิธีการสัมภาษณ์เพิ่มเติมเกี่ยวกับความคิดเห็นของผู้พูดภาษาไทยถิ่นอีสานต่อการขึ้นจมูกของเสียงสระเพื่อนำข้อมูลมาใช้ประกอบการวิเคราะห์และอภิปรายผลผลการศึกษาพบว่าโครงสร้างพยางค์ที่มีพยัญชนะต้นเป็นพยัญชนะเสียดแทรก-เส้นเสียง /h/ มีอิทธิพลต่อสัดส่วนค่าระยะเวลาฯ และค่าความต่างแอมพลิจูดฯ อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ ในขณะที่รุ่นอายุเป็นปัจจัยที่ส่งผลให้ผู้พูดมีค่าทางกลสัทศาสตร์ดังกล่าวแตกต่างกัน โดยที่ผู้พูดในรุ่นอายุมากมีสัดส่วนค่าระยะเวลาฯ มากกว่า และมีค่าความต่างแอมพลิจูดฯ น้อยกว่าผู้พูดในรุ่นอายุน้อย นอกจากนี้ วัจนลีลาตามความเป็นทางการมีอิทธิพลต่อค่าทางกลสัทศาสตร์ทั้งสองค่า คือ ในวัจนลีลาที่มีความเป็นทางการมากกว่า ผู้พูดมีสัดส่วนค่าระยะเวลาฯ น้อยกว่าและค่าความต่างแอมพลิจูดฯ มากกว่า สำหรับวัจนลีลาตามผู้ฟัง พบว่า ผู้รับฟังโดยตรงมีอิทธิพลต่อสัดส่วนค่าระยะเวลาฯ อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ กล่าวคือ ผู้รับฟังโดยตรงที่เป็นผู้พูดภาษาไทยถิ่นอีสานที่อยู่ในกลุ่มเดียวกันกับผู้พูดส่งผลให้ผู้พูดมีสัดส่วนค่าระยะเวลาฯ น้อยกว่าผู้รับฟังโดยตรงที่เป็นผู้พูดภาษาไทยถิ่นอีสานที่อยู่นอกกลุ่มผลจากการศึกษาของงานวิจัยนี้ พบว่าผู้พูดรุ่นอายุน้อยและรุ่นอายุกลางมีแนวโน้มที่จะปรับเปลี่ยนการพูดของตนตามระดับความเป็นทางการและลักษณะของผู้ฟัง ในขณะที่ผู้พูดรุ่นอายุมากแสดงให้เห็นถึงความสม่ำเสมอในการรักษารูปแบบการพูดของตน สำหรับผู้พูดรุ่นอายุน้อยและรุ่นอายุกลางการขึ้นจมูกของเสียงสระมีสถานภาพเป็นตัวบ่งชี้ที่แปรตามบริบทและผู้ฟัง ส่วนผู้พูดรุ่นอายุมากมีสถานภาพเป็นตัวชี้บอกที่มีการแปรตามตัวแปรทางสังคมเท่านั้น

การศึกษาสแลงในปัจจุบันเมื่อเทียบกับอดีตพบว่ามีจำนวนการศึกษาลดลง เนื่องจากข้อจำกัดด้านการบันทึก และปัญหาในการนิยามสแลง นอกจากนี้ การศึกษาสแลงที่มีอยู่ในภาษาไทยมักไม่ยึดระเบียบวิธีของพจนานุกรมศาสตร์ งานวิจัยนี้มุ่งประมวลสแลงที่ใช้ในกลุ่ม “INTO THE BORDERLAN” ซึ่งเป็นกลุ่มในเฟซบุ๊กที่มีวัฒนธรรมเฉพาะตัวในปริภูมิดิจิทัล โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีของพจนานุกรมศาสตร์ ประกอบด้วย การนิยามสแลง การเก็บข้อมูลผ่านการสังเกต การสร้างรายการคำ และการจัดเรียงตามลำดับตัวอักษร เพื่อศึกษาความท้าทายในการประมวลสแลงที่ใช้ในกลุ่ม ผลการศึกษาพบว่าความท้าทายที่เกิดขึ้นในการประมวลสแลงในกลุ่มประกอบด้วย 3 ประการ ได้แก่ การกำหนดนิยามเชิงปฏิบัติของสแลง การสร้างรายการคำของสแลง และการจัดการจริยธรรมในการเก็บข้อมูลและการเขียนรายการคำ
