Semantic Constituents Of Constructions Taking That-Clauses, Robert S. Haller

What this paper has tried to do is to present some data which would have to be accounted for in an adequate semantic theory, and to suggest some of the specific elements of such a theory. A semantic theory must presuppose the existence of modal operators on every utterance, and would explain the meaning of any discourse as the relation among its medals. Logical theory has always done this, in taking every proposition of an argument as an element of the modal relations making up the argument. From the introduction, "In this paper, we shall first summarize the findings of several scholars who have contributed to recent literature describing the history of tone in the Tai languages; we shall then focus on one problem that, to my knowledge, has not yet received sufficient attention: namely the reasons for widely divergent patterns of register development, in view of evidence for consonant-pitch correlation which might lead us to expect greater uniformity within the language family."

From the introduction: "The main body of this paper is concerned with drawing a parallel between Khmer and Vietnamese. We will endeavor to show the possibility of applying the tongue-root hypothesis to Vietnamese as it is already being applied to Khmer. (This hypothesis explains the grouping of certain phonological features in terms of historic advanced or retracted tongue-root position.) To do this we will be referring to "exponents of advanced (or "retracted" as the case may be) tongue-root position. Excerpts: "The Cuicateco Indians of Mexico are a tribe without songs, yet they are known as the singing people. The tribal language is a tonal one with many word couplets, triplets and quadruplets which sound alike except for a difference in the tone. To put Cuicateco words to existing tunes in other languages would be a total loss since the music would mar the meaning so much that it could not be understood."

From the introduction, "Dr. Thomas' paper is to be applauded as an indication that some Wycliffe linguists have joined in the growing rapprochement between linguists and philosophers of language. Philosophers have devoted much attention to subtle analyses of the semantics of certain subparts of language, namely those which are "philosophically interesting." However limited this corpus may be, it behooves linguists to find out how much of the scientific work of philosophers can be salvaged for use in dealing with semantics in linguistics.
