The ESL Reading course described in this report was conducted for Latin American scholarship students during the summer of 1973 at the School for International Training. Since it was intended to be a supplement to the regular classes of these students, every effort was made to allow the course direction to develop according to the needs of the participants. Although the original thrust of the program was to focus upon reading attitudes, utilizing the reading interests of the students, a parallel focus on reading skills evolved. The purpose of this project is to present some lesson plans for teachers of English as a second language (ESL) to children in the first years of school to show the potential of numerical concepts to teach ESL. Hopefully reading or looking at the samples in creating units in ESL with numbers as a content matter can give teachers ideas about how to create their own lesson plans using this or different content matter. The project includes a study of the Instructional and Performance Objectives, Teaching Techniques, Visual Aids, as well as Number and Language Games, among other topics.

The Resource Center: An Open Classroom For Teachers, Judith B. Glass

The Resource Center of the School for International Training's first three-week workshop in methodology for teachers of English as a Second Language was designed to encourage program participants to explore their individual interests independently, to share their ideas and professional experience in a series of ten evening workshops. Materials in the Center included a library of texts and books discussing ESL methodology and theory, collections of games, realia, visual aids for language teaching, and supplies including audio-visual equipment for making original classroom materials. The center was deemed successful, a viable idea for future development.

I have offered evidence that name-calling is a linguistic act which correlates the assumption of a status-relation between speaker and addressee with the use of terms marked (+abusive). To call someone a bastard, for.this reason, is not understood as the attempt to categorize him according to some term whose meaning, in the ordinary sense, is a list of lexical features. Rather it is the attempt to categorize him as without status in relation to the speaker himself, in defiance of his expectations, and because he has himself deserved it by himself invoking such a right over the speaker. From the introduction: "This paper describes the five contrastive paragraph types in Mamanwa. The five semantic categories of paragraphs are Narrative, Procedural, Explanatory, Hortatory, and Dialogue. Form categories on the paragraph level, as on the sentence level, are simple, antithetical, coordinate, and parallel.
