Communication Modules: Student-Generated Language Arts Projects For Bilingual Education, Annie Katherine Hawkinson
Communication Modules: Student-Generated Language Arts Projects For Bilingual Education, Annie Katherine Hawkinson
MA TESOL Collection
The materials consist of nine curriculum units designed for use with bilingual students at 4th, 5th, and 6th grade levels. Although originally developed for French-English bilingual students, they can be used with any language group, since the learning activities are themselves not language-specific. The language used for each communication project is collected from the students themselves: hence the units themselves can be used with any bilingual group.
The learning activities are also designed to be used in multilevel classes, i.e. classes where students' language proficiency may vary. They of course may also be used in classes where such variation does …
A Voyage To A Culture: A Special Collection Of Teaching Techniques ( Imaginary Trip Becomes Real In A Classroom), Silvana Hage
A Voyage To A Culture: A Special Collection Of Teaching Techniques ( Imaginary Trip Becomes Real In A Classroom), Silvana Hage
MA TESOL Collection
My project uses an imaginary voyage in a classroom as an introduction to second language culture. It consists of a special collection of teaching techniques for post-elementary language teachers of an advanced second language course. The purpose of this project is to help students get a glimpse of a culture in a situational, functional, and performing way. The students plan an imaginary trip to the second language culture of the country where the second language is spoken.
A description of my own experience with the project is given in order to give an overview of how long, when, where, and …
Suggestopedia: New Use Of Innate Mental Capacities, Phyllis Lorraine Crowell
Suggestopedia: New Use Of Innate Mental Capacities, Phyllis Lorraine Crowell
MA TESOL Collection
This paper discusses certain characteristics of human mental functioning - an understanding of which sheds light on the mechanism of suggestopedia. These characteristics are: (1) the electrical impulses produced by the brain, and in particular, the alpha brainwaves, which are characteristic of a calm state of mind which is believed to be optimum for accelarated learning, (2) the division of left and right brain hemisphere functioning and perception - with the right ( intuitive) functions being a focus as the receiver of suggestion (subminal stimuli from the environment; the moving force in suggestopedia), and (3) the conscious vs. the paraconscious …
A Course In Basic Grammatical Analysis, John P, Daly, Larry Lyman, Mary Rhodes
A Course In Basic Grammatical Analysis, John P, Daly, Larry Lyman, Mary Rhodes
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the preface: "The purpose of this material is to give the beginning student the means to analyze the basic grammatical structures of previously unanalyzed languages. No former study of a foreign language or prior linguistic training is presupposed. In conjunction with practice in problem solving, the lessons guide the beginning student in doing basic grammatical analysis and prepare him for applying in a field situation the grammatical concepts he has acquired.
"The theory on which this course is based is Standard Transformational Grammar with some modifications and differences in emphasis. The standard theory facilitates grammatical descriptions which are abstract …
An Overview Of Error Correction: Cultural Dimensions And Techniques, Kathleen Carty, Joseph Reilly
An Overview Of Error Correction: Cultural Dimensions And Techniques, Kathleen Carty, Joseph Reilly
MA TESOL Collection
In this paper the writers consider the theoretical issues of error correction in the language classroom. The evolution of different philosophies regarding error correction is discussed. This is followed by an overview of some of the assumptions behind language teaching approaches in vogue and implications these assumptions have for handling errors in the classroom. Finally, the paper presents classroom evidence to support the idea that there is a cultural dimension that must be considered in the treatment of learner's errors.

The Completive And Potential Form Of Chichicapan Zapotec Verbs, Joseph P. Benton
The Completive And Potential Form Of Chichicapan Zapotec Verbs, Joseph P. Benton
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "The phonological changes associated with the potential and completive aspects in Zapotecan languages have been traditionally analyzed suppletively (Butler 1980, Pickett 1960). In this paper I examine suppletive and nonsuppletive analyses of the potential and completive aspects of Chichicapan Zapotec, hereafter ChZ. I show that a nonsuppletive analysis of the facts of ChZ is more insightful than a suppletive one."
Noun Phrase Components In Southeastern Tepehuan, Elizabeth R. Willett
Noun Phrase Components In Southeastern Tepehuan, Elizabeth R. Willett
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "My purpose in this study is to explore ways in which speakers of Southeastern Tepehuan talk about persons, places and things, the semantic notions generally associated with nouns. Although in English we are accustomed to expressing such ideas as quantity, quality, orientation, or possession of an item with a noun phrase, we cannot assume that in other languages semantic categories will always correspond to the expected syntactic categories as we know them in English. For instance, in Southeastern Tepehuan adjectival ideas are always expressed as predicates. On the other hand, some surface dependent clauses which at first …
The Role Of Language In The Theory Of Communication Of Nicolas Malebranche, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
The Role Of Language In The Theory Of Communication Of Nicolas Malebranche, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
French Language and Literature Papers
Nicolas Malebranche (1638–1715) is perhaps the most important French philosopher between Descartes and the Revolution of 1789. His synthesis of Cartesian elements and Augustinianism in the last quarter of the seventeenth century had great influence on several generations of thinkers before the rationalism he represented was replaced by the new Lockian sensualism. There has been a European revival of interest in Malebranche in the last twenty years, centering around the first critical edition of his complete works, a task headed by the Belgian historian of philosophy André Robinet, and there are signs that American interest is growing as well with …

The Use Of Interpreters And Translators By Professionals : Report On A Day Seminar Held At Mount Lawley College On 18th August 1981, Ian G. Malcolm
Research outputs pre 2011
Some professions are, by their very nature, unobtrusive. We are dependent, for example, from time to time, on the professional competence of air traffic controllers, though, unless things go wrong, we are not likely to notice what they are doing for us. They are not in our focus, but they serve to facilitate what is in focus for us. Translators and interpreters are like that. They are at their most successful when they are least obvious. Their professional role is to facilitate communication rather than to participate in it. Their exceptional communicational skills are put to the service of their …
Comparison Of Scores Obtained On The Ppvt And The Ppvt-R, Jennie L.M. Choong
Comparison Of Scores Obtained On The Ppvt And The Ppvt-R, Jennie L.M. Choong
Dissertations and Theses
The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) is a widely used receptive vocabulary screening tool, but it is not without its limitations, such as inadvisable I.Q. usage and a standardization procedure that lacks scope. A revision of the PPVT, known as the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R) was published in 1981, and contains a more complete standardization procedure as well as some structural changes of the test itself (Dunn, 1981). Speech/language pathology, whose diagnosticians most commonly use the age equivalent value, is a profession that would gain from information which deals with the equivalency of the PPVT-R to the original PPVT. …
Attitudes And Attained Esl Proficiency Among First Generation Swedish Mormon Immigrants, Cecilia Nihlen
Attitudes And Attained Esl Proficiency Among First Generation Swedish Mormon Immigrants, Cecilia Nihlen
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis project, the relationship between attitudes toward target and native culture groups and attained ESL proficiency among immigrants was evaluated. The subjects were thirty adult native Swedes, all members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who had spent an average of 29 years in the United States. Fourteen were members of a Swedish-speaking branch, while sixteen were members of English-speaking wards. Significant differences were found in immigrants' attitudes toward the culture groups. High English proficiency related positively with a more positive attitude toward the target culture group. Those demonstrating high proficiency viewed the general native …
Measuring The Reading Level Of Lds Materials: A Supplement To The Dale Word List, Linda Stahle
Measuring The Reading Level Of Lds Materials: A Supplement To The Dale Word List, Linda Stahle
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to supplement the Dale word list with a list of terms that are familiar to most members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and thus increase the precision of the Dale-Chall readability formula when it is applied to LDS materials. The Dale word list consists of 3,000 words that are familiar to 80 percent of fourth graders. The procedure involved identifying non-Dale words that occur frequently in LDS church publications and testing them on LDS fourth graders in a three-alternative multiple-choice format.
Of the 850 words tested, 249 were identified correctly …
Role Of Rating Value Of Words And Displaced Rehearsal In Semantic Rating Tasks, Manju Karmeshu
Role Of Rating Value Of Words And Displaced Rehearsal In Semantic Rating Tasks, Manju Karmeshu
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Two experiments were carried out to investigate the role of rating task, displaced rehearsal, and the value of words on the retention of items processed at the semantic level. In Experiment I, the subjects rated medium value words for either pleasantness or frequency under free rehearsal conditions. The results revealed no retention differences between words judged for pleasantness and those judged for frequency. In Experiment II, high and low pleasantness and high and low frequency values were factorially combined within a single list of words. In the free rehearsal condition, words were judged on either the pleasantness or frequency rating …
Semantic Priming Effects In Lexical Ambiguity Resolution, Donald R. Maxwell
Semantic Priming Effects In Lexical Ambiguity Resolution, Donald R. Maxwell
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The study addresses a number of issues related to the effects of biasing semantic contexts on the processing of words with more than one meaning (homographs). Biasing contexts have been taken to either constrain “lexical access” to a contextually relevant meaning of a homograph (selective access), or to exert a selective effect only after access to all, or some subset of, the meanings of a homograph (multiple access). Recent findings based on the two-factor theory of attention (Posner & Snyder, 1975a) suggest that lexical access occurs in two stages, where the first stage involves automatic activation of all meanings and …
A Grammar Of Two Pacoh Texts, Richard Leon Watson
A Grammar Of Two Pacoh Texts, Richard Leon Watson
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
The goals of this grammar are threefold: first to learn more about the Pacoh language of Viet Nam and leave a record of the results for future students of Pacoh; second, to learn more about discourse structure, and third, to learn more about deep grammar and its correlations with surface grammar. The method followed emphasizes a particular discourse approach and a particular deep and surface grammar approach. The discourse approach calls for a thorough analysis of two expository texts, resulting in individual text grammars. These are next compared and contrasted with each other. Then they are compared and contrasted with …
The Double Accusative In Koine Greek: A Syntactic Study, Terrell A. Malone
The Double Accusative In Koine Greek: A Syntactic Study, Terrell A. Malone
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents an analysis of the double accusative in Koine Greek within the framework of relational grammar theory as developed by Perlmutter and Postal. Monostratal and multistratal grammars are compared. Various kinds of evidence, including flagging of predicate dependents case function, passivization, gapping, question-word movement, indefinite relativization and parallel structures are used to argue that multistratal grammar more adequately and concisely accounts for the syntactic behaviour of the double accusative nominals than does a monostratal grammar. It is proposed that indirect object advancement, oblique advancement, subject ascension, and a combination of causative union plus indirect object advancement all can …
A Comparison Of Spanish Language Samples Elicited By The Investigator In The Clinic And By The Mothers In The Home, Soledad Chavarria Navas
A Comparison Of Spanish Language Samples Elicited By The Investigator In The Clinic And By The Mothers In The Home, Soledad Chavarria Navas
Dissertations and Theses
The primary purpose of the present study was to compare the quality of spontaneous language samples elicited from twelve low socioeconomic, normally developing, migrant Spanish-speaking subjects by their mothers in the home and by this investigator in the clinic. The subjects ranged in age from three years, one month to six years, nine months.
The essential question sought to determine if the comparison of language samples elicited in the home by the mothers and the language samples. elicited in the clinic by the investigator yielded significant differences in syntactical language development as measured by the Developmental Assessment of Spanish Grammar …

A Grammatical Sketch Of Berik, Peter N. Westrum
A Grammatical Sketch Of Berik, Peter N. Westrum
Theses and Dissertations
This paper is a grammatical sketch of the Berik language based on language data gathered while living with the Berik people in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The levels of the grammatical hierarchy described are words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. The tagmemic model has been used as the model for analysis
Words, isolatable units which cannot be further divided into "free" forms, are divided into classes which are distinguished from one another according to principles of affixation.
Phrases consist of at least one obligatory tagmeme with one or more marginal tagmemes whose fillers are typically words. Several different phrase types are identified. …

The Interrelationship Of Cultural Information, Linguistic Structure, And Symbolic Representations In A Halbi Myth, Frances Margaret Woods
The Interrelationship Of Cultural Information, Linguistic Structure, And Symbolic Representations In A Halbi Myth, Frances Margaret Woods
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
The mythology of the Halbi people reveals and reflects their cognitive orientation (and, in the process, validates their cultural values). The Halbis' myths are expressed through the linguistic form of narrative discourse but mere analysis of the form of the discourse provides only a fragmentary understanding of the content. As a result, linguistic analysis is only part of discourse analysis. Discourse analysis also calls for an analysis of the cultural setting and of the dynamic interplay between the culture and language in terms of the message (or meaning) of a given myth within a given culture. This study represents an …
Pragmatic Aspects Of English Text Structure, Larry Bert Jones
Pragmatic Aspects Of English Text Structure, Larry Bert Jones
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
This study is an integration of two frequently independent fields of inquiry in linguistics, text analysis and pragmatics. It brings together the focus in text analysis on the structural and cohesive aspects of monolog discourses, with the focus in pragmatics on the relations between individual sentences and the communicative context in which they are uttered. The perspectives of text analysis and pragmatics are linked in an examination of the relations between the structure of written English texts and one aspect of the communicative context: an author's assumptions about the knowledge of his reader. This study makes five major contributions to …
Application Of A Cognitive Model Of Linguistic Structure To The Analysis Of Selected Problems In Tzeltal (Mayan) Grammar, Stephen Leslie Walter
Application Of A Cognitive Model Of Linguistic Structure To The Analysis Of Selected Problems In Tzeltal (Mayan) Grammar, Stephen Leslie Walter
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
Underlying the dominant theory of language today is the assumption that language is innate to homo sapiens. Theoretical and analytic work at all levels of linguistic inquiry are predicated upon this assumption. The present study questions this assumption arguing instead that what is innate is a limited set of cognitive structures which interface man and his environment. It is suggested that man is heavily dependent upon these cognitive structures for knowledge about the external world. Further, it is assumed that language is a behavior by which man communicates to others a portion of what he has learned about his world …

Sentence Components In Southeastern Tepehuan, Thomas L. Willett
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "In a complement paper on the Southeastern Tepehuan clause structure (Willett, this volume), the semantic and surface types of basic predications were discussed. The present paper begins to explore the inter-clausal relations of minimal locutionary and illocutionary force. It surveys the semantic and syntactic sentence types with primary reference to grammatical relations.
"The semantic propositional structures, along with their modal parameters and other semantic prosodies are discussed in Section 1. Then the basic syntactic forms of sentences and their related grammatical elements are outlined in Section 2, along with a mapping of the set of semantic sentence …
