Developing A Test Of Communicative Competence For English As A Second Language Students At The College Level, Kristen Kern
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of the research was to develop a test of oral communicative competence for English as a Second Language (ESL) students at the college level.
This research first reviewed the current literature on the topic of communicative competence from the perspectives of linguistics and sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and speech communication. The 1iterature on testing for communicative competence within the ESL and foreign language teaching fields was also reviewed. A 7-minute oral semi-direct taped test was then developed and administered to a trial group of 5 ESL students and a final group of 25 ESL students at Portland State University. …

On Coexistence And Convergence Of Two Phonological Systems In Michif, Donna Evans
On Coexistence And Convergence Of Two Phonological Systems In Michif, Donna Evans
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "In this paper I will present some of the evidence that has been used to argue that Michif has two separate phonological systems. I will also present evidence demonstrating that convergence is occurring, particularly at the level of phonetically motivated rules."
Arawakan (Brazil) Morphosyntax, Desmond C. Derbyshire
Arawakan (Brazil) Morphosyntax, Desmond C. Derbyshire
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "The purpose of this study is to present some of the major morphosyntactic characteristics of eight Arawakan languages spoken in Brazil. [...] The five areas of morphosyntax which are treated in tern in the following sections are: word order, case marking, verb morphology, coordination, and subordination. As will be seen in section 3, much of the morphosyntactic complexity of these languages is found in the verb, and certain phenomena that in other languages would be dealt with in other parts of the syntax are treated in that section, including: valence-changing devices such as causatives, passives and reflexives; …
Obviation In Michif, Deborah Weaver
Obviation In Michif, Deborah Weaver
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
Michif is a language growing out of the contact between Europeans and Native Americans, mostly French and Cree. Spoken by residents of the Turtle Mountain Reservation in North Dakota, as well as in parts of Canada, it has a noun phrase that is primarily French and a verb phrase and overall syntax that is primarily Cree.
This thesis examines the effect the loss of most Cree nouns has had on the proximate/obviative distinction usually found in Algonquian languages, of which Cree is one. This distinction is a cross-referencing system for identifying which of several third persons in a given context …

Just Like The Dutch Kids: A Sociolinguistic Study Of A Child's Early Acquisition Of Dutch As A Second Language, Judith Marlow Herby
MA TESOL Collection
opportunity for my family to spend a year in the Netherlands provided me with the occasion to observe my son’s acquisition of Dutch and to discover with him what it is like to become bilingual. This study of his progress begins in the U.S. with his introduction to Dutch as a foreign language at the age of 3 years, 1 month, and continues through his eighth month in the Netherland (age 4,5). Special attention is given to sociolinguistic factors as well as behavior and cultural adjustment. A journal of his verbal and behavioral progress was kept during this time and …

A Handbook For Esl Teacher Training At Okinawa Christian School, Dan Jerome
A Handbook For Esl Teacher Training At Okinawa Christian School, Dan Jerome
MA TESOL Collection
The handbook has been designed for use as the text in a two or three day teacher-training course as well as a reference book of information useful throughout the academic year of the school. Because many of the ESL teachers at the school are inexperienced and/or untrained in the field, the information and suggestions have been written in non-technical language using a question/answer style that attempts to deal with the practical issues with which new teachers are most concerned. More than a “how-to” book, however, the handbook suggests matters of philosophical importance that will help teachers see beyond the immediate …
An Introduction To Rods : Grammar And Story Telling, Edward A. Combes
An Introduction To Rods : Grammar And Story Telling, Edward A. Combes
MA TESOL Collection
In this paper I propose a way of using rods in teaching ESOL that is consistent with my personal assumptions about teaching and learning. It is written for teachers with no or little previous experience working with rods.
The introduction of the paper tells of my own start in working with rods and why I feel rods to be an exciting and important learning tool. Next there is a step-by-step analysis of the application of rods in teaching the present, past, future, and perfect verb tenses. Finally I address ways of using rods to generate stories, with rods representing all …

Initial And Non-Initial Indirect Objects In Spanish, J. Albert Bickford
Initial And Non-Initial Indirect Objects In Spanish, J. Albert Bickford
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "In this paper I survey various constructions in Spanish that involve indirect objects. I claim that many final 3's in Spanish do not head initial 3-arcs, in particular, those that appear in Causative Clause Union, in the Inalienable Possessor construction, in Inversion, and in constructions in which the final 3 is an initial Oblique.
"The analysis and discussion is carried on within the framework of Relational Grammar (Perlmutter, 1980, and to appear, a and b). I present an argument that because Relational Grammar posits initial syntactic relations that are distinct from both semantics and final syntactic relations, …

Phonational Frequency Ranges In Vocally Untrained Adults Using Different Cardinal Vowels, Lorie Renee Chambers
Phonational Frequency Ranges In Vocally Untrained Adults Using Different Cardinal Vowels, Lorie Renee Chambers
Dissertations and Theses
In the clinical management of voice clients, it is important to measure accurate pitch ranges in order to determine if a client has a normal range or is speaking at an optimum pitch. It is not clear from the literature which vowel should be used in determining these pitch ranges. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the phonational frequency ranges in adults with no vocal training when phonating the cardinal vowels of /i/, /u/, and /a/. The investigation sought to answer the following question: Does the phonational frequency range in vocally untrained adults vary significantly when phonating the …
The Acquisition Of Obligatory-Do, Bernadette Maresh-Ericksen
The Acquisition Of Obligatory-Do, Bernadette Maresh-Ericksen
Dissertations and Theses
The auxiliary verb obligatory-do is used in forming questions, negative and emphatic sentences. Currently there is no test or norms established for the acquisition of obligatory-do. The purpose of this study was to establish age trends, via elicited imitation for the acquisition of obligatory-do according to the sentence type in which it expressively occurs i.e., negative sentences, emphatic sentences, interrogative reversals and wh-questions. This study addressed the following question: At what ages do children expressively demonstrate, via elicited imitation, the auxiliary verb obligatory-do in negative sentences, emphatic sentences, interrogative reversals and wh-questions? A secondary question was: In what manner does …

Lds Language Teaching And Learning: Highlights From 1830 To 1982, Cynthia L. Hallen
Theses and Dissertations
Since the establishment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, its leaders and members have been commanded and encouraged to learn foreign languages. With the gift of tongues and diligent effort Latter-day Saints have made great progress in the last 152 years in meeting the challenge of learning and teaching languages. This paper is an attempt to compile what has been done by Church members, programs, and organizations to promote language in a world where international communication is increasingly important. It will also be a resource for the LDS Church, the Missionary Training Center, Brigham Young University, and …
Synoptic Asymmetry: An Inter-Disciplinary Approach To The Synoptic Problem, David Herman Boltz
Synoptic Asymmetry: An Inter-Disciplinary Approach To The Synoptic Problem, David Herman Boltz
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
In interdisciplinary studies, the question arises of how best to mesh interrelated disciplines. Here, linguistics (in the complementary disciplines of discourse analysis and perspective) is inter-phased with New Testament scholarship at the literary juncture of the synoptic problem--a problem which is not a theological construct, but which is an anomaly inherent in the very gospel texts. Chapter 1 provides an overview and a short history of the synoptic problem, which is one of the most difficult problems in the history of ideas. The three synoptic texts (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) differ from and yet complement one another. What is the …
The Structure And Rhetorical Effect Of Seven Questions In Koine Greek, Peter E. Unseth
The Structure And Rhetorical Effect Of Seven Questions In Koine Greek, Peter E. Unseth
Theses and Dissertations
Most of the latest work in understanding Koine Greek questions has concerned itself with taxonomies based on the dichotomy between real and rhetorical questions, as epitomized by John Beekman and John Callow (1974). However, some are now pointing out that other factors, beyond the grasp of this taxonomy, enter into questions within conversations.
In an effort to look at these questions in more depth, this paper applies two analytical models to seven questions in Koine Greek. The first is the illocutionary force model, particularly as formalized by John Searle (1977). The second is the rules of Repartee as formulated by …
